Don't build a Cargo Trailer Conversion because you're an amateur??? This video discusses possible reasons why "amateurs" might build a "basic" Cargo Trailer Conversion Rather Than purchase a ready built camper.

Last night I finally finished my build of my cargo conversion all by myself as a now 73 year old woman. Im not a professional snd it is not perfect. It has taken me nearly 3 years, due to money mainly. I live on very little social security but I'm very happy to be done. I installed the security features to finish up. I did not build my cargo conversion to impress anybody. I own a 28 foot RV, but I prefer my 6x12 trailer. I leave in 6 days for my summer trip. I did a trial run at Christmas and when I came home, I tore out everything, started again because I learned what I really wanted in personal features and comforts. Now 6 months later, I'm extremely proud of my work and my little RV. I now have room for all my pets to comfortably travel with me. I only care about what works for me. I live aboard my sailboat and now I have a "landyacht " to travel and live in as well. I dont care about resell value. None of my stuff is for sale, ANYWAY!! LOVE Y'ALL ❤

Anyone with the money or the credit can purchase a premade RV or TT but very few can design, create and fashion exactly what they want or need. Special requirements for mobility, space, end use are met by those with the courage to try to create what they want and not just buy it. Hats off to the Cargo Trailer Conversion movement!! Keep on Living and enjoy the Rendezvous with all the like minded people!

Haters are gonna hate!! You hit the nail on the head, the most negative, vocal ones are usually the ones that are not capable, or willing to even try it for them selves. I could go on for hours about the problems we had with our brand new, " high end" camper. After 2 years of problems, Everytime we used it, we sold it. We are currently building a 7'x16' x 7' tall V nose enclosed trailer. Thank you so much for what you do. PLEASE keep on keep'n on. We have learned so much from your videos.

You tell em Bill and Deb! So many ideas in my build came from you guys. And I didn’t build it to resell, though like you I’ve had a couple folks ask if I would build for them. I had a troll say in my videos I talked too much and I was boring. So I just added that to my channel header. “I make boring videos”! Keep up the great content.

I've worked for 10 years as an rv technician and another 5 years as an Airstream Restoration technician, so I know how to build trailers from the ground up to the roof. My personal trailer build is a cargo trailer conversion. Everything Bill & Deb said is spot on. I built it for myself. Not to please anyone else. The features, quality of materials, and functionality are tailored to my specific needs. I know exactly who built it and who is going to perform any warranty work on it!. And I stole you guys' idea for the fresh water refill system and your grey water removal setup for my truck!. Brilliant!👍

I drive for a RV Transport company delivering brand new RV travel trailers and RV 5th Wheel trailers (more than a hundred of each). For those who think the converted cargo trailers are not up to the quality of the factory built units, you could not be more wrong! Factory built units are built with the cheapest materials in the shortest time to be able to make the most profit on each unit. EVERY SINGLE unit i tow out to the dealerships on the maiden voyage has some issues or damage from poor workmanship or poor quality materials used that the dealers spend 30 to 90 minutes looking over each trailer when I arrive to catalog and document in order to charge the repairs and replacement parts back to the manufacturer. I have had siding peeling off on the highway, windows imploding when semi trucks pass, wiring and electrical issues, TVs laying on the floor broken, trim, wallboard, and doors coming apart...all on the very first trip! When family and friends ask what trailer I would buy, I ALWAYS tell them, I would have an all aluminum cargo trailer built for me and convert it to what I want. This means I get to decide the layout, I get to build it to the quality level I want, I get to use the materials I want, and I know every inch of construction. In addition, I get to design it for ease of maintenance and repair. The factory trailers built during the pandemic were TERRIBLE because they tried to speed up production and (as we all recall) there were shortages of many materials so even worse materials were used. The build quality has improved in the past two years, the materials have improved but only slightly, but I would still NOT buy a factory unit. They are just not good enough for my hard earned money.

I've owned tents, a pop up trailer, a 28' travel trailer, and a 26' class C motor home over the last 50 yrs. If I have the opportunity I would build a CTC. I have watched CTC videos since the start of "C" and I have been impressed with the innovations that are used. Insulation choices, designs fron minimalist to extravagant, and such a range of ideas. I'm amazed and VERY IMPRESSED with the outcomes. If I knew this 50 yrs ago I'd have built a CTC.

These folks that down what we do don't have the skills to accomplish what we can . If they purchase something can they fix it? Probably not. We that build our from scratch can fix it without having to pay a technician to come out and fix it. I work hard for my money and can't see spending money on someone to come out and trouble shoot the problem. When you build it. You know what to fix. You are a step ahead knowing where everything is. Again I love you guys and to me this is the only way to go !!!!!!!!

Good morning Bill & Deb. Rick coming at you with a comment after watching this video I was compelled to comment! My wife and I own a 32 foot commercial manufactured RV built by "professionals". This RV cost us a absolute load of money. I work in the construction industry and have all of my life. When we started looking for our RV we looked at all the major manufactures and settled on the one we now have. I watch a ton of your videos and enjoy them all . with that said I will get to the point at hand. The so called professionals that built our rig cut so many corners its ridiculous I can say that unless you are willing to spend over a million dollars for a motor home THEY ARE ALL JUNK! Every RV is mass produced and built as CHEEP as they can build it to increase there bottom line. I am very interested in doing a build for my self hoping that some day I will do just that. Watching your videos has given ideas about what I would do when doing so. Sure some of the tiny HOMES are bare bones ,some are really nice and they all service the needs of the end user which is all that matters.

I OWN a 7x16 right now that is going to be a conversion. I recently GAVE away a 28ft travel trailer. A few repairs to the gonna occur leaks and I would have a nice RV,for less than my conversion. My cargo trailer has a ramp door, haul my heavy Harley and or my ATV, and still stay, Camp or live in it. Yes, just when I have my lay out absolutely in my mind, darn it, I see another one and yes new ideas. Something else I've thought about, my conversion I can take apart something I'm not happy with and redo. That big ol camper trailer "ain't gonna happen". I'll shut up, really enjoy your videos. Agree 100%. Building your trailer for your needs is what it’s all about. I’ve been using and building my trailer for 4 years and getting near completion. Purchased the trailer in March 2020 and got my tags as the DMV was shutting down for “The 19” and at that point it was hard to get out to buy building materials so I camped in the trailer as was, learning what I truly needed for me. Fortunately for me, I have the skills and tools to create pretty much anything I need. For me, the biggest challenge was my time and the weather. It’s no fun building in summer with the heat or winter with freezing temperatures. That doesn’t leave much time in between and that time is going to have its share of rain. The end result…….. I have exactly what I want in a trailer without the frustration of dealing with dealer/factory warranty. Crafted with pride…I am the warranty. As I always say…..You do you and you will be happy! Happy building, camping and living!

RV's in my opinion are not built that well, many fall apart, and have to be adjusted to fit different needs. But, building your own cargo home, you can build it and put in what you want, according to their own needs. A Cargo home can be a home, an office, a performing stage for an entertainer. A toy hauler for a person that races cars or motorcycles. And they seem to work better than an RV for many.

Bill their will always be one out there that isn't happy about something. I have seen some trailers that look like they were chewed up and spat out on the outside, now on the inside WOW! Just like antique hot rod cars, they clear over the patina on the outside and have chrome engine compartments, super clean interiors. I wish I had some of the skills and financial access some of those people have. Then you learn the only labor they did was fill out the check. I am proud of our bugout trailer, so is my wife, 17:47 our problem not anyone elses. We love to see what others have built, that way when we do our next one we have a lots of things we would like to add, and see how it all flows together. Cargo camper conversions are the way to go if you have a place to build it. I built mine outside of my mobile home. Special order with 6 windows, finished ceiling, camper side door and insulated. The inside i built it to look like a real nice log cabin. I even have 5 foot snowshoes hanging on the wall along with a miniature sled and many other things that you'd find in a log cabin. Memory foam mattress with 2 real handmade quilts. You can check it out here. Sorry about the shaking, never had a steady hand. 😊

I built mine to fit many of my needs. Firstly, I built as I used it and found the right location for many of the fixtures and cabinetry. Secondly, I wanted to haul my quad, dirt bike and all the other toys I may need depending on where I was going. Thirdly, the payload of my cargo trailer excides any toy hauler I could find while designing my interior. forth and most importantly, I can use it for many different uses from hauling, moving items. But none of it was built to "impress" anyone.

First, I love you folks honest information. I always thought it was little silly to buy and RV when either the mechanical or the camper itself would fail and maybe not at the same time. No matter how fancy or crude it may seem, if it serves your needs that is all that is needed. Bill, you are fortunate enough to have the skill sets to do what you can do. But you are smart enough to reach out to people with the other expertise. No trailer, RV, car and home is perfect. You always find something a little better or you don't like it. Bottom line as you said, it is only for you not anyone else. It is not built for resale. But yet if you strip it out and resale the trailer, you are going to get much more of your investment out the trailer than an RV. For many years, I slept one week a year in the back of my pickup with just a cap and a matress. Well when the truck died, I have had to resort to going back to a tent and I hate. Besides getting up off the ground instead of stepping down out of a truck bed, dealing with wind and rain blows downs, I miss that truck so much. If I was going to do more of that kind of camping, I would do a cargo trailer in a heartbeat. Thanks for your always honest and straight remarks.

It took me a hot minute to compose myself after laughing so hard! Love our minimalist conversion. Wouldn’t want anything else; owned a travel trailer 20 years ago. It had a lot that we didn’t need. So what we have is what we need. You mentioned the quality of those built by the “professionals.” And the quality of the professional builds regarding the frame flex issue is highly suspect. I know of one family that couldn’t come to an agreement with the manufacturer and recently had to “trash” their very expensive 5th wheel.

It's wonderful to see the intelligence, creativity, passion and craftsman/womanship that is put into each build-out. The comment at 2:55 seems a bit rude - but inspired me to share my opposite observation. It's been educational and fun viewing many lovely, unique designs in your walk-through videos. Great to see such a variety and not just another cookie-cutter r.v. that will surely not last as long as some custom-builds. I watched your video comparing cargo trailer to conventional trailers (motor homes etc) Now then let me tell you about a little different experience getting from one to the other. First, We started RV ing full time in 1996 when we retired. I now am 82. When we retired we bought our first RV A new 36 ft motor home. Over the next several years We have bought 6 motor homes, the most expensive being a Blue Bird 450,000 and the least being around 36,000. Now I have a 7 X 14 cargo trailer. I built it for me and sometimes my wife or a friend it has 2 beds and a bathroom (for the wife) I use it for fishing and hunting trips and some trips around the US and Canada. These folks that judge others by what they RV in or full time in just need to worry about themselves because how much money or convenience one has is a personal thing and just might surprise some.

The person commenting should go take a look at how most camper trailers are put together. Stick frame, light weight paneling, stapled together. I'm planning on building my own cargo trailer conversion to live in full time. I looked at traditional RVs and man they are built like crap and let's not forget they are highly susceptible to roof leakage since the only protection up there is a thin rubber membrane. I'd rather build something for me and me only, I don't care about impressing anybody.

Nicole and I usually don't chime in but couldn't resist this apples to apples for you... OK everyone over by the campfire... there are some that would rather go get fast food and there are some that would rather make thier own food. The fast food industry is bottom line out to give you the cheapest best tasting product to make themselves the most money they can. Those that make their own food pick out their own ingredients, mix in seasonings they like, and cook it or bake it how they want it. If you like to pay for cheaply made fast food, that's what you want. If you want a down home cooked meal, that's what you want. But I wouldn't suggest bringing a happy meal to our Thanksgiving dinner. (Adds log to fire).

We enjoy our cargo trailer. I was building mine about the same time frame as y’all’s first trailer. I remember Deb setting in the middle of the unfinished trailer on a stool with her legs crossed. I’m guessing now but it looked like y’all may have had a family discussion. Maybe it just gave me a chuckle. My wife said to me I’m not staying in that box. My time has changed her mind! When you going to do this we need to paint the inside again. My cot is inside the house and now in its place is a queen size bed with a 12” memory foam mattress. Mattress was more than the trailer cost! What was to be a hunting trailer with no frills has become something different. I tell her I’m not feeling good. She says how much is in your 401 k? I hope she’s kidding. 47 years together and making memories!

Why????? They didn't know what the hell they were talking about. I don't own a trailer but like you i have look at dozens of conventional rv's and came to the same conclusion that you did. I am amazed how creative some of these guys are with their builds, also how many the ideas that can be used in a house or maybe a small cabin. Beds, plumbing, storage and cabinets to turn that spare bedroom into something else and still be used for guest. I enjoy watching your videos and ideas. All they would have to do is watch a few videos about all the trouble they have with rv,s and they would see what your talking about. Buy they way I've seen a Mini split (new to me) that runs on solar and ac at the same time without a battery. Somehow the ac supplements the solar as needed or runs off either one as needed at the same time.

I love your guys channel. The reality of my own trailer conversion seems to be closer to fruition, so I had a question for you of anyone that might have advice. If I get a trailer that has a generator box built in (with an exterior door etc) can you run a small generator in that box? Or is it just to store it? My thought was using it for more emergency or recharging purposes while boondocking . Those compartments seem to be sealed off from the interior of the trailer, but I thought I’d ask the folks that would know:)

Why spend time bringing attention to the negative comments? With this particular one you have given then the entire attention for one whole video. Why is that person even watching your channel would be my question LOL Most You Tubers do it but I don't know why . Love watching the walk throughs myself but bring myself to watch an entire video that brings the haters to the lime light, if you want to call it that. Have an awesome meet up and i'll move on the your next video :) Thanks.

My thoughts are once your tired of your build it can easily be converted back to a good ole cargo trailer. I plan on partially building one for camping that can still be used as a cargo trailer.

For minimalist that wants a small footprint the options are 1) $20k for a teardrop I can’t stand up in 2) $30k for a fiberglass that has minimal storage options or $30-40k for a compact travel trailer with a bunch of options I don’t want want and can’t opt out of. Buying an RV or travel trailer right now means paying the equivalent of a couple years of house payments for the privilege of camping in the dealerships service center for the better part of the year and fighting with the dealership and manufacturer regarding who covers your repair on the warranty!

People who think that way waste money on a sales pitch and believe they have something of great value. So they believe. For those of us who see through all of that we prefer to create something for ourselves and use the skills and creativity we possess to satisfy our own vision and budget. We could care less if they’re impressed. Thanks for watching and commenting though, it helps the algorithms.

The resale value of a cargo trailer conversion will of course be lower due to the lower initial cost. Some cargo trailer builds are primitive. So they will be valued lower. But their cost was less in dollars and time. I dare say you two have quite the rig. But you put a lot of thought into this rig. And THAT makes a big difference! My son has an older Winnebago class C. I would love to help him build out a cargo trailer he can pull with a small truck. Between your videos, Amazon, IKEA, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and others, we could do well! But it would be what my son wants! You two are just so level headed, it is refreshing! Keep it up!

RV trailers are as good as mobile homes....cheap and disposable. You can fix most things or contract them out on some cargo trailers, but the manufacturers would have to fix it basically like it was.

The only reason i didnt build one out of cargo trailer was i had to have it right then because i was living on the road doing shows and didnt have time. The reason i didnt build my last one that i will own till i can drive anymore is i am too old dont feel good amd no help. Wouldnt worry about what anybody says

How can I connect with you and FB or Instagram? I am almost done with my 1st ever conversion, so wish I could have made the rendezvous. One day! Wanted to share pics, still need to finish trim and the bathroom build out, but ND spring weather has not played nice lol This is my first build out. I spent the past 2 years trying to figure out what path to take, tear drop, rv, or build my own custom. I have a converted U.S. geo monster van as well, but I've learned I want my living quarters seperate from the drive vehicle, and I want to stand up inside! I love that so many are hoping on board with this movement! Home built are typically built better, custom to your tastes and needs, and easier on the pocket book. Love your vids, I'm not camping, I'm living too!

I’m a 55-year-old DIY'er and I can DIY just about anything as good if not better than so-called professional. Quite frankly in my humble opinion generally the difference between me and a professional is for them. It’s what they consider a career or what they’re getting paid for. With that said there are plenty of professionals out there that are more than capable, qualified and worthy to command premium for their service. With that said there were plenty others out there, that aren’t worth a damn.

You bought the trailer and built a custom interior. FAR LESS EXPENSIVE than buying a commercially built RV of the same size that will all but disintegrate in 5-10 years. I love tradition- it's very traditional to build your own. People have been doing it since the 1920's. Around here (New Mexico), 40 year old falling apart commercially built travel trailers falling apart are being put up for sale for thousands of dollars. I'm saving for a cargo trailer and I'll build my own interior. Anyone who doesn't like it can go fly a kite. I don't build to impress anyone. I build for me. don't like it? cool- don't look at it then and walk away. Basic or cabinetmaker skill level doesn't matter. It only has to please the owner.

My wife and I are planning a conversion within the next four years. We don't know yet if we'll wind up in cargo trailer, box truck, or what ever. I can guaranty, our build will impress nobody, as we both value function over form, and my woodworking skills amount to "get it done, if it holds, and does what it's supposed to, it's good enough." I know for a fact, it will give us shelter, a space to sleep, and somewhere to do our crafts that we want to do. I also know, if we get an actual RV, it will be one that is MANY years old, built before quality fall through the floor, has good bones, and will get completely stripped out on the inside and basically converted just like I would with a cargo trailer.

If the box truck breaks down, you lose both transportation and a place to sleep. Where as your camper can be in a campground while your vehicle is fixed.
@davej7434

@JackBean-rd4uo thought about that issue ourselves, the one big thing I thought about is how much it would suck having to break camp just to go to town to get a dozen eggs because they broke, or the propane bottle went empty. So we decided to do truck and bumper hitch, we have a 7x12 and haul a motorcycle with us, we love it, but with retirement coming up soon, we want to do a bigger trailer for month camping not weekly. So we are planning on a 8x18 or equivalent. This way if the truck dies, we have the bike as backup.

@@davej7434 Exactly, just like I put my fresh water tank underneath my tool box on my pickup truck with the pump next to it and the battery in the tool box and my garden hose can reach my camper and be used as my outdoor shower ,if you put your water tank in the trailer then you haveto haulthe traileraroundto fill it up unlessyou'reat a campground with water. I also have my small gas generator chained to my tool box. I live in Florida and hook up when a hurricane can be a threat. So over 5 years I have finally found out the best way to make things easy. Mine is a 7x14 and you can click on here to see it if you want. I just shake a little.

Many different definitions for the word amateur. It depends on how offended you want to be. A prime example would be: "a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons", or your interpretation; "a person who is incompetent or inept at a particular activity". As you can see you can swing both ways depending on your how you look at things. Just as my comment boosts your algorithm, I'm sure theirs did also.
