I need to stop bringing plants home and THEN searching for information on them. (At least it's plants, and not lovers, that I make that mistake with!) I'm just back from the nursery with $180 worth of tropicals. I'm glad this particular one is not going to be a headache! I know some of the Alocasia will!

I'll add that this one needs warm nights. If your house gets cold nights in the winter like most of us in the US do, it will stop growing and it becomes harder not to overwater it. If your nights are warm enough for say Alocasia to grow vigorously', or if you keep it warm 24/7 then this will thrive. Showers do help!

I have had this plant for several months and it did very well until recently. Now it is browning on the leaf tips and I haven't changed anything about care. The light outside is changing with the sun moving to the south and shining in more. This is all I can think of as a cause.

I’ve actually never heard of this plant! What family is it in? Like, is it a philodendron? How do propagate it? Does it vine? I’m surprised that it’s so full! Usually the plants that look similar to it only have two or three leaves but this one is really full, which makes it more appealing to me! I’m seriously running out of room for more plants and just bought more succulents (I still need to take pictures of them and post them!) and they’re all squeezed in together as there’s only so much room on the shelves under the grow lights!! Thank you for sharing! 💜💚🪴
@GetPlantyWithIt3 жыл бұрын
It's actually a time of Caladium (which was definitely surprising to me because they don't look like the type of Caladium we usually see). Propagation occurs by root division (similar to how you would propagate a peace lily). And haha I definitely feel you on running out of room 😭

I cannot figure out this plant. When I first got it, it was fine. Then it got a fungus on one of its leaves and I had to cut it. Then another leaf got fungus. Then it got root rot. Repotted it in better draining soil. Was fine for three weeks and it got root rot again, so badly that it lost almost all of its roots. I had to cut off most of its previously well developed root system. Trying one last thing and that’s keeping the root system in water and hoping it’ll grow some healthy roots in a couple of weeks. I got a smaller lindenii which came in a sad state, repotted it in better soil, and then one of the stalks just… basically unalived itself. This has been a struggle plant for me so much and it’s so sad because I LOVE the foliage on this plant so much.

Curious to know what kind of water and soil you’re using. That could be the issue. But, I had a plant that got a fungus on the leaves the philodendron birkin which turns it brown. I cut those off which were falling off everyday. 😢 I removed the original store soil, cut off any rotten/ and or too long roots then rinsed the entire plant off and soaked the roots in a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for about 10 minutes boy was it bubbling. Then rinsed again and repotted in new soil gave it a good feed and good water and been great ever since. Hope this helps.

Just got my hands on one. I mostly deal with pothos, philos, and snake plants but this is my first one of these. I've had it for over a week now, have not repotted it, haven't watered it but I have been misting it. Starting to droop a bit but the soil is still pretty moist. Do I still give it a drink? I put fertilizer in it already. It's in a 6" nursery pot. When I'm ready to repot, should I not go any bigger than 8"? Sorry for all these questions. Any help is appreciated!

@GetPlantyWithIt2 жыл бұрын
Mine definitely went dormant in the winter, but I think if you can replicate summer conditions in your home (with light, humidity, and temp) they may not go dormant. If they do, make sure to save the bulb because it'll regrow in the spring/summer!

does the plant need a lot of water? I have one and it's been kinda droopy lately with slightly curled leaf tips.. could this be a sign of little watering? I water once a week but I've been using moderate amount so as to not overwater it. Also, this may be a dumb question but can I ask what healthy roots should look like? This is my first plant of this kind and the roots are way thicker than what am I used to, how can I tell if something is wrong with the roots? 🥺
@GetPlantyWithIt2 жыл бұрын
I've definitely found it to be a relatively thirsty plant! Instead of going by watering schedule I would feel the soil and whenever it seems dry a couple of inches down I would give the plant a full watering! Healthy roots are usually white and should feel pretty firm. Different plants all have different root thicknesses, so I think the thick roots aren't a problem!

Oh no! Depending on the light/temp in your home the plant may be going dormant since it's winter! Also if you got it from Costa you might want to check the roots - when I went to repot mine I noticed a little mesh net around the roots that was preventing them from growing properly. Otherwise I would try to make sure to water when you first notice wilting and make sure it's getting good light and warmth!

These things ARE SO NEEDY. Too much light? Leaves dry up and die. Too little light? Leaves dry up and die. Too much water? Leaves dry up and die. Not enough water? Leaves dry up and die. Too large or small of a pot? Leaves dry up and die. Wrong temp? Leaves dry up and die. Wrong type of soil? Leaves dry up, and you guessed it! Die. I am on my third, and I may have just found the sweet spot. With two leaves left.
