whenever i hear this music and i remember the movie "the deerhunter", i think of time passing by when we were young, then all of a sudden here we are like in the sunset of our lives and we start to ask ourselves what had happened? how time had passed so quickly by, how people dear to us had passed on to the great beyond and we ourselves are in the throes of moving on as well. time is fleeting and we often wonder what had happened to our youth, when we would frolic under the sun or dance under the rain. now even every bit of movement is a difficult task and we strain in remembering things past or persons we've known. time sure flies like the wind as the music "cavatina" wafts in the air...

Wade I agree. I reflect whenever I hear this music. I believe it is God- sent, and we can always use this art form as we meditate on the meaning of our lives. And as we live in the service of God and our fellow human beings, in the end, as we watch the fleeting moments before us it will always be a life well- spent, rich, vibrant and fulfilling. That to me is "Cavatina" ...

Such a beautiful piece. Unfortunately, even though it was written well before the film, I no longer can separate it from 'The Deer Hunter', a masterpiece of a film I have only watched once, and never will again, due to the sadness, sorrow and feeling of utter desolation it left me with.. This stunning instrumental just makes me cry now.

Yes. One of the things that causes depression is knowing there will never be justice. You see the corruption and the evil that just oozes out of people, and they slither away on the bellies. You can see the coldness and the sadistic expressions on the faces of those who are feeding off of the russian roulette scene, and the despair and hopelessness on the face of Dinero...he already knows he's going to lose, either way. That's the ugly truth about life in a democracy.

I will never forget when I was a kid, one of the most talented classical guitarists I had ever known, would play this piece for me whenever I asked him to. He was awesome, playing with such musical grace that kept me transfixed in repeated astonishment with watching his remarkably skilled fingers caressing the strings as they flowed fluidly over the frets of his guitar. Thank you, Gerard Lim, for sharing your stunning yet gentle gift with us after Mass on Sundays. If by chance you are still alive and by the Grace of God you read this comment, know that I still carry the deepest gratitude for your kindness of entertaining a kid who could only marvel and admire your gift whenever you quietly played your guitar for her.

When I was a young child, my father said to me "we're going to watch a movie, and it will make you a man". After watching The Deer Hunter I just sat there realizing the terror, reality, and cruelty of war. My father disrupted my silence and said "Never forget your brothers in arms". He was a stern MasterCheif in the US Navy and the Vietnam Conflict recently ended. His words never left my heart. Father, I have not forgotten the fallen, and will carry them with me for the rest of my days. ~ I have been in the USMC now for 33 years and am MasterSeargent. I will not forget you.

He wrote a famous book called "War Is A Racket" Butler was one of the most decorated Marines in history but after he retired he came clean and denounced Wall Street for using the US armed forces as their "muscle". The moment the American empire is dissolved the US armed forces can regain their rightful and laudable goal of defending the republic from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC! That means Wall Street!

How perfect. How many of us having lived so long see our lives reflected in cinema and music. The love we have lost, the time we could have had “if only”… Anyone claiming no regrets is either a liar or have had no life to remember at all. My memories encompasses the 1950 to 2024. I have many regrets. Most involve not having had time or circumstance to make even sweeter memories with loves I could not pursue either due to time or circumstance. A long list of lovers is a fools errand. Love in its purest form is what I sought. Lucky I was to have found it more than once.

Beautifully done. The rough and tumble riverside steel mill town scenes in The Deer Hunter masterfully captured how life was for so many. They used several steel mill riverside towns but mostly Steubenville, Ohio. Dino Crocetti aka famed crooner Dean Martin, was born and raised there, like my Dad. And like my Dad, his Dad was a barber in Steubenville. Every time I hear this song, I think of my Dad who became a victim of some of the brokenness in our healthcare system nearing 11 years ago. Both my Dad’s parents came from Italy as toddlers, through Ellis Island. Many Italians settled in the steel mill towns. My Dad was a True Patriot and effective pioneer in the Electronic Defense industry starting in the USAF. When he passed one of those choked up on learning the news, was the President of the leading global trade group in electronic defense. My Dad had a presence like a cross between tough guy actors Brian Dennehy and Gene Hackman, so we all figured he’d live a very long time. Each of this song, Claire De Lune and Andy Williams singing “Moon River” will always remind me of him. I had to come back to add this: in the category of there are no coincidences or, as not enough say, “Signs from God” perhaps... ...immediately after posting this, I stepped outside for a quick errand. Just in time to note the clouds coming in at a ceiling lower than my current 9,600 plus feet elevation in Colorado. With the full moon rise lighting the cloud play reminding me of the mountain hunting scenes from The Deer Hunter.

It is unfathomable how blessed the human race is by playing a musical instrument or using their voice to express the words of a given song. If we would only sit back or stand & listen to the gifts that God has bestowed upon us, don't you think that the world would be a much better place in which to live? Is this just a pipe dream? David was a Gentleman in every respect. David loved his wife Carol without end or doubt. I will always relish watching them “banter”. This was more a product of David’s loss of hearing than wholesale disagreements. David loved his Country like every man should. I always observed David as a “gentle spirit” who deeply loved his family - and was never at loss to admit. David Wilson will be missed “dearly”, as a Man, as a Loving Husband, and as a deeply committed Family Man. David, I loved you on earth.....and I love you now in Heaven. Such a beautiful and moving piece of music for one of the best films ever made. 3 friends working at a steel plant join the army and go to fight in Vietnam, an experience that affects them very badly and for one of them, Nick, an experience that eventually was fatal. Having been drugged and having been forced by his captors to play Russian roulette, he became addicted to it and shoots himself in front of Mike, despite his desperate attempts to stop him. Mike promised Nick he would bring Nick home from Vietnam and he keeps that promise, although Mike has to bring him home in a coffin. Mike and Nick’s friend Steve, the bridegroom at the wedding, is badly injured and left a cripple and is bound to a wheelchair while Mike, whilst the strongest, both physically and mentally of the three, is so badly affected by his Vietnam experience that he lost his appetite for deer hunting and towards the end of the film he spares a deer after having had the animal in his sights. Earlier, just before leaving for Vietnam , Mike asked a veteran what it was like in Vietnam and the veteran replied “F-it”. By the end of the film Mike understood what the veteran had said and felt the same way himself. Another moment was when the wedding guests were invited to drink wine without spilling it snd when the audience saw wine spilled on Angela’s wedding dress, this was an ominous and chilling sign of what would lie ahead for the friends. Christopher Walken certainly deserved his best supporting Oscar and Robert De Niro should have won Best Actor - he throughly deserved to snd I still think it was his best performance, despite his many brilliant performances in the years since, including his latest, or one of his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon. The Deer Hunter is one of the 5 best films ever made, in my opinion, alone with Gone With the Wind, The English Patient, Titanic and Gladiator. It was the first adult rated film I ever saw in the cinema, now over 45 years ago, and like all the others, is a Best PIcture Oscar winner. Although Cavatina was written before the Deer Hunter, I believe nearly 10 years before, it is now so closely associated with the film that for all intents and purposes, it was written for the Deer Hunter. The music so beautifully and perfectly captures the combination of the joy of the wedding and the beauty of the American countryside with the horrors of the Vietnam war and the effects they have on the 3 friends. A truly classic piece of music indeed.

Absolutely the most beautiful, moving piece of music ever! This was the perfect song for a movie like The Deer Hunter, which is my all time favorite film. It made the movie that much more powerful. I want this song played at my funeral!

Words cannot describe the emotions I hear when I hear this music...it takes me to another time to beauty of the universe and love for family , children , grandchildren, and parents. But most of all the man I have loved for over 57 years. My soul, my beloved husband

In the history of filmmaking …. This theme song is probably the best match between story-line and music as there will ever be. Cavatina seems to take you deep into your soul. Really makes you think about your own life with trials and tribulations.

In 2/19 I lost my very best friend. Her name is Indigo. She was a Rottie mix, and was 14 yrs old when she passed. I love(d) her with all of my heart. We could finish each other’s thoughts, communicate our feelings with just a look. We were inseparable, and she was a beautiful creature. I first heard this particular version of Cavatina soon after she died. It perfectly expresses the love that we shared with one another, and the excruciating pain caused by losing her. That is why I now refer to this specific music, in this video, as “Indigo’s Song.” 💔💔💔💔😪😪😪😪

Beautiful...the way you expressed it...pets ARE family too....I have soooo many memories of old pets that are gone, they were soooo important in my life, in my children's lives as well...I remember pets from when I was just a little girl; their personalities and everything about them and now I am old and retired. I took it upon myself, however, to take care of a cat that my dear old neighbor when she passed away and although Lisa (the cat) is not as "sweet" and /or cuddly, I make sure I spoil her and take care of her. She was an almost wild farmcat, but she will have a loving home, no matter what, with me, as long as I can take care of her! It wasn't her fault what happened! My children have learnt, since a very young age, to never hurt animals and be kind to them and they are both loving pet owners! Sooo proud of them...I could seriously harm a person, if I knew they hurt animals.....no kidding! Humans are actually the worst animals on this planet....sorry to say!

this is so hauntingly beautiful. i don't know what it is, but compared to the original, this version of the song made me cry. i haven't lost anybody in my life, didn't know anybody from vietnam who suffered this horrible war, and yet i cry, because this song says so much more than that. it's an ode to life and love. it's the bittersweet nature of nostalgia

I didn’t expect this movie to have such a profound effect on me. It exposed the depth of the PTSD I had no clue existed in my psyche.. While the other viewers of the movie exited the theatre I sat in my seat weeping uncontrollably for 15 minutes. I walked away from the film understanding that my service in Nam was not for the flag it was for my fellow Marines. Semper Fi.

Discharged from the 82nd Airborne in Jan 1979, this song brought back so much pain, however in a soothing way. The boys I lost in combat, I called them, "my boys", I can see their dirty faces, and more. It is my cross to bare, did my job as a medic, more than most. I hear the beautiful ascension into heaven for my boys, they sure did not get it here on earth. I play the violin for my boys, I just hope they can hear me.
