A possibly unrivaled genius. The depth of his knowledge is the only dimension challenging it’s breadth.

You are right, information is missing between part 4 and 5. Part 5 talks abt dream of a man. Part 4 didn’t mention about it.

Jung's psychology is unscientific on the following grounds: • that some Jungian concepts, such as archetypes and synchronicity, cannot be proven by the scientific method • that Jung subscribed to a nineteenth-century notion of evolution that has since been discredited • that Jung's valuation of the mental functions of feeling and intuition on the same level as thinking weakens the attitude of rational objectivity that is essential in scientific research • that Jung's interest in occult traditions, including the pre-scientific European past (third-century Gnosticism and medieval alchemy) and contemporary Asian cultures (Taoism and Tibetan Buddhism) amounts to a glorification of mysticism and irrationality • that Jung's clinical specialization in the treatment of schizophrenia and his own brush with psychosis made him an untrustworthy guide to "ordinary" reality These points are especially important today when we are witnessing a plethora of anti-science or where wholes sciences have become politicalized , and the fact that 50% of all psychological research cannot be replicated.

Yet the most scientific of disciples physics always "glorify" ancient mystic stuff. Also psychology is a gray area because despite all the knowledge and facts known about the brain, consciousness still has no real explanation.

I take him with a grain of salt given he didn’t have access to the same information we do today, but there’s still tremendous value in reading Jung. His theories are certainly speculative but they’re based on years of very intentional observation combined with his years of study in the fields of symbolism and cultural/religious practices. And since all philosophical and religious belief is the output of human consciousness, any person learning about how and why people think should be very interested in learning more about these areas. Whether you like it or not, humans simply aren’t naturally inclined to only think scientifically 24/7, hence why most people still hold religious beliefs and hold bias irrational opinions. As you said a scientist should be aware of their biases so as to not cloud their objectivity, and Jung described earlier in this book his attempts to do this, but ultimately bias is a natural human tendency.

Though his work influenced psychology in a positive direction, among modern psychologists Jung's work is not taught. Jung never did any scientific study to validate his theories, and most of his ideas were found to be false by later research.

Good point, if its not backed up by scientific research, its not hard science. But then again, I see psychology more of a social study, then a science (such as chemistry). The ego, id, shadow, anima /animus are terms to describe sides of a persons mind. You cannot measure the weight or size of the shadow with a ruler, but you can push a person toward self actualization.

Considering the bulk of his work is theorizing the unconscious, and there has been little to no ground in scientific approaches to the unconscious, I’m curious on how it can be said that most of his work has been disproved? Also, as I am finishing my masters degree in clinical counseling I can say verifiably Jung is being taught. Additionally the scientific work toward understanding dreams has demonstrated that dreams are far more important to physiological health and longevity than previously thought and yet there’s still no understanding as to why that is the case.

@@Noahsuess I have a theory that Jung is not false per se. It's just that our scientific apparatus cannot measure the unconscious YET. One day we will have such apparatus and then we'll scramble through Jung's notes as a roadmap

The greatest tragedy; is that his work was misunderstood, he made a mistake to equate some shared and personal experiences to universal laws, and the fact he tried to explore the hard issue of consciousness (everything modern science and instruments cannot register, measure and understand about the unconscious) was abused to allow the birth of new age garbo.

Jung was fascinated by the unconscious direction of attention. It seems to me that you haven't taken on Jung properly. This is apparent because Jung is taught and there are communities of psychodynamic psychoanalysis which holding at the frontier of its teachings. His work has also never been refuted. Those who do this with Jung don't do it with him and what he left us, but rather, they discard him because of how he was referred to as a mystic, sympathisers of Nazi Germany etc. He was so much more than what people so easily and readily disregard. Listen to James Hillman in defence of Jung on KZbin. It's 7 hours so It's understandable that you'd rather discredit Jung under no authority other than your own belief system. However if you do wish to learn, this video is the place to start.
