It is a painting of Saint Jerome by Jean-Léon Gérôme (a fitting name for the painter of such a painting, as Léon means lion, and as they share the name Jerome). It can be seen as an image of the sheer power and wildness of the unconscious which lies behind and under our head. It is also an image of the taming of the unconscious. Jerome famously befriended this lion when he removed a thorn from his paw. Jerome healed the animal/unconscious, befriended him, and thereby made the unconscious conscious.
