Today I want to share a holiday memory which introduced me to the wonderful art of Swedish artist Carl Larsson (1853-1919).
Here's the website of the Carl Larsson house: www.carllarsso...
All paintings shown in this video are from the collection of the Swedish National Museum, www.nationalmu...

I am happy to see this video about Carl Larsson. I first discovered him in a library book in the late 1970's and I became fascinated. He immediately became my favorite artist, as well as his wife Karin and the way she used textiles to decorate their beautiful home. I desperately wanted to find a book about them, and after much research and long distance telephone calls, (not common or practical at that time) I learned that a book was available in the gift shop of the Chicago Museum of Art. I actually took a train from AnnArbor, Michigan to Chicago to buy that book! I still enjoy it very much. Since then, over the years, I have collected vintage Swedish tapestries, cross stitch, and embroideries - mostly found on eBay. I never understood why I had this fascination for Carl and Karin and their home and design. I discovered recently why I think I have had these interests that are completely foreign to my life. After taking an Ancestry test, I discovered that a large percentage of my ancestry is actually from Sweden. I had no idea!

Oh thank you for sharing that Shari - that's so lovely! It's an odd thing isn't it - I did the same and was convinced I was going to be mainly "west European" (as my family did not move for literally hundreds of years and all of my ancestors that I can trace back to the late 1600s are from the same 20 mile radius it seems). But turned out that the DNA itself is more than 50% Scandinavian (meaning that there must've been quite a bit of vikings that have settled in the region I'm from!). For the rest the DNA group itself is hyper local (literally a 40-mile radius DNA group). It's so fascinating! :)

Thank you for the reply, Jacob. That is indeed very fascinating, that for hundreds of years your ancestors stayed in the same area! I appreciate your vlogmas videos so much. Peace from a friend in Ohio

I love your story, Sharri. I’ve also got Scandi ancestry and was drawn to Larssons work when I was young. I was lucky enough to see his original paintings in Stockholm when backpacking. I love his home and the art legacy he left for us to enjoy. We are blessed by his life’s work.

Good evening from Germany. I grew up in the 1980ies with books by Carl Larsson which belonged to my parents. My father must have visited Larsson`s house while attending university. I would love to go to Sweden once and visit that house. I remember being a little girl looking at the watercolor paintings in the books: I felt the harmony and coziness. This is what my parents were for me. Without them this world seems to be a bit colder.

I was delighted to see Carl Larsson as the subject of today’s video. I discovered his artwork in the small town of Lindsborg, Kansas. It is a basically Swedish community, a college town, lots of arts and crafts. My Mom collected plates and I contributed several of Larsson’s works to her collection. Such lovely pieces.

That's so lovely Nancy - it was Carl's wife Karin who inspired a lot of things about the IKEA brand, I recently found out! They even reproduced some of her furniture pieces and were inspired by her textile art. The Larssons definitely had a huge impact on the colourful cheerful aesthetic of the company :)

Thank you for sharing a bit of Carl Larrsen’s story. I’ve always loved his work but it’s lovely to hear a little of his personal story. How sweet that he was able to find the love with his wife and children that he didn’t experience as a child. It reminds me of my dad who had a terrible childhood but as an adult showered (and received) endless love on my mom and his three daughters❤️

I first saw a painting by Carl Larson in a Christmas card that someone sent me. I was so struck by it that I began to follow his word. For many years I had his paintings on my yearly wall calendar and even cut out pictures to cover oatmeal boxes for my cabinet. I am of Swedish ancestry and one year I was able to visit my relatives in Halmstad for Christmas. It was a precious time. My great aunt taught handcrafts in a local school. My Mother collected quite a few Swedish folk objects which I still pull out every year. We seemed to get Swedish at Christmastime. All of these happy homey feelings are expressed so beautifully in Carl Larsson's work. Thank you for this video.

Thank you, Jacob. Carl Larsson has been dear to my heart most of my years. His art prints were part of our extended family's cottage near Scandia, Minnesota. It was purchased in the late 1800's by my grandparents and remains in the family today. It, too, was warmly decorated with art and fibers. My aunt was a follower of Peter Hunt, an American artist. She decorated cupboards with his style. They all remain lovingly treasured by us all.

I once studied a little about Larsson's life and learned that his family endured alcoholism and being forced to live with a few other families in one single room! One would think that such poverty, with numerous addictions, would throw a spanner into the talent of an individual and cripple his psyche and his development. Not so in his case. His joy of life, and his love for his family shine through in his works.

Thanks Jacob for an introduction to this artist’s work. I will definitely try to find some books at the library to enjoy his watercolour paintings as I am now back into watercolours myself. Art History was my “ best subject” in high school. ( my mother wished it was Math, but alas…)😅 Cheers! 👩🏻‍🦰🇨🇦

In 1977 I was working in a children’s nursery where there was a large landscape picture book of paintings similar to Carl Larkin’s. Each page saw some young children playing in their playroom with a different activity on each page. On one they played washing their dolls clothes. On another building with blocks. Another, a train set, and another sprawled on the floor making pictures with their crayons. Does anyone recognise this book? Is it by Carl Larson and do you know what it’s called? 😊I would really love to track down this book. I have never forgotten it or the way I felt looking at those pictures. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Congratulations with your fluently spoken English. I enjoyed your narrative a lot. Carl Larsson had a unique way of picturing Swedish every day life. By the way do you remember the children series “De kinderen van de Kreek” with Bootsman? Joyeuses Fêtes 🍾.

Hello fellow Scandinavian. I am American born……100% Norwegian heritage. I mean for real. Genealogy done back generations. I have struggled if I should go back. I married a Czech Irish English wonderful man, one of the reasons I have not returned. I love the u s a Sometimes I find when I go home to Norway, they are a bit self righteous. After all my papa came here at age 16 to make enough money to buy a farm tractor. 🚜. Sometimes it America is good enough for different people groups to come here, make their money…..and then condemn us. This is why I stay. Have you any thoughts for conflicted Norwegian American?
