It's crazy that Carl Lewis won a gold medal in 1996. Because I remember watching him when I was a kid in 1984. Then the next year I competed in my first track meet, in the long jump. Then I competed through high school and in college, graduating in 1995. So, in late 1995 I was working a regular job. My track days were over. Carl Lewis, who inspired me to go to my first track meet as a child was somehow still winning Olympic gold medals while I was retired from track and working in an office. That's insane.

Funny story. In 2014 i was at the NCAA indoor track championships in NM and Carl Lewis walked right up to an open seating area. The usher was on her way to throw him out when a chorus of "do you know who that is" erupted around her. He flashed his credentials and she let him stay. But after a few people pulled up their phones and showed her 'who' this man was ... she was embarrassed. Poor lady was likely wasn't a US citizen when Carl was the face of track and field. Carl saw her embarrassment and hugged her (she was almost in tears by this time). I still have a pic of the two together. Carl was a class act.

I'm still coaching long jumpers in Iowa and I enjoyed getting the chance to be at your clinic and getting to meet and talk to you and LeRoy. Folks, he is a down to earth great guy and one of the greatest people I've ever meet. Still hope someday you'll come present at the Iowa Track coaches clinic. I feel so privileged that I got to meet the greatest athlete of our time. Thanks for doing this interview so kids know even you had to work hard to achieve that greatness. Glad you also told kids to go out for multiple sports to be a better all around athlete in the long run. Take care, Carl.

Carl looks great. Man, he ran a clinic in every 100-meter race I saw him run. He executed impeccable upright (bicycle) form. He ran like a gazelle. Eric Dickerson ran with the football looking like Carl's form. He wasn't slow out of the blocks, but he was never in a hurry. Carl was beautifully, gradually upright from the blocks about 6 steps out, and accelerated to top speed. (Compared to Ben Johnson's star, who sprang up erect and then charged ahead.) Just like he says, I always thought he hit top speed at 60-70 meters and (seemed to, in my eyes) was able to accelerate out of top speed. Here he says hit top speed and held on. Carl and Eveyln Ashford dominated the 100 meter races for a full decade. Carl was / is The Dude. Mad respect.

If he questioned Bolt's times why didn't he immediately question Flo Jo's insane times in Seoul. She made a massive drop from mediocre in 1984 to men's times in 1988 in both 100m and 200m. Also why didn't he question Michael Johnson's 200m time in Atlanta? Massive drop there too from the previous year(s). Or was it because they were/are American athletes and not subject to the same scrutiny?

All the money, the endorsements that are available to the top talent today and for the past 30 years, thank Carl Lewis for that. He paved the way for world class athletes in track and field to become superstars and be handsomely rewarded. Carl Lewis is the reason why the mens 100m is the most important even at the olympics since 1984. It’s the showpiece event. When Bolt came along, it was MUST WATCH television for 10 seconds, you don’t do anything else.

Carl Lewis is one of the biggest frauds in Olympics history. I used to admire him as a super athlete and a great ambassador for the sports of track and field, but I lost all respect for him when I found out he was a notorious drug cheat. Lewis tested positive for PED - not 1, not 2 but 3 times during the 1988 US Olympics national trials and should have been barred from competing at the '88 Seoul Olympics and banned from the sport. But the corrupt US track and field governing body covered up his test results to protect their superstar allowing him to carry the US flag during the opening ceremony and compete at the games.The cynicism and hypocrisy around Lewis drug use was an insult to people's intelligence because the same US officials who lobbied for the Russian team to be banned from the Olympics did not release Lewis failed test results until several years AFTER the expiration of the statues of limitation that prevented him from been stripped of medals won at the Olympics and have him exposed as a fraud. When asked about it around 14 years later (early 2000's) on video he just shrugged and said "that was a long time ago.. and all the US athletes were using PED at the time" - Stunning.. but track and field fans remember at the Olympics when Ben Johnson failed a drug test after winning the 100m finals, Lewis went in a rage, insulting him and calling him nasty names when he (Lewis) knew at the time he was 3 times more guilty than Johnson.
@simonkelly1665
@simonkelly1665 10 ай бұрын
You are technically right but the amount of “PEDs” in his system is negligible and he wouldn’t be done for doping today. So he’s not guilty of that. Hope that restores your love for him.

Agreed 100% he is a big HYPROCRITE ...don't have any love for him either and respect. Plus he and the USA athletes association use Ben Johnson as a scapegoat also.. and all those remarks he made towards Ben and the comments about Jamaican athletes also wasn't nice

Carl Lewis became an adjective he was so good. Like Xerox. Anytime speed was mentioned, or someone was fast, Carl’s name was invoked
@Dewdrops7560
@Dewdrops7560 11 ай бұрын
Whenever Carl Lewis name was invoked, I remember BALCO and those enhancement drugs, almost bringing the sport into disrepute... Carl Lewis can deny it all he wants he was caught cheating and it was covered up by the USA... Even his teammates said that he was on drugs... He gets absolutely no respect, he's a cheater.

I remember when Carl Won his 4th LJ Gold medal at the 1996 Olympics near the end of his career the commentator or headlines said “you offer him a him a gold watch and he steals your Gold medal.”

GOAT? That's funny. He's a 3-time PED drug cheat.. test results were covered up by US track and field officials and he was allowed to run in '88 Seoul Olympics. (Google it) He's the biggest fraud in track and field. His failed test results were made public 15 years afterwards - after expiration of the statues of limitations that enabled him to keep the medals he won
