I show Sagan's clips in my middle school science class pretty regularly, with great reception. His genius is his amazing ability to know at the highest realms of math and science, and yet captivate the creativity and energy of the youth with his teaching. I hope I can become as good a teacher as he was. We miss you, Carl!

I too enjoyed the way in which he brought complex concepts to a simple level.

There's always this stigma that scientists have to be cold and unemotional, and yet, you never see that to be true. Scientists, particularly Astronomers, practically double as poets. Especially people like Sagan. Every time I hear this guy talk about science, I just get this warm fuzzy feeling, and I can't help but feel love the universe and everything in it.

I am just watching the Cosmos episode and, having read Alice in Wonderland, I love Sagan even more. "Curiouser and curiouser!" It's almost embarrasingly pleasant, and I catch myself saying "Oh, you!"

I saw that in a book, when I was younger. there, the rabbit, the hatter and alice were'nt put away. The high gravity crushed them so that they became a part of the ground. THe trees started breaking to pieces (the cat still floating in the air uneffected). In the end even the light was bend (but the cat still did'nt care)...

Listening to Sagan speak is very inspiring and calming. No one can replace him to fill the void he left behind. I was very happy to see Tyson recreate Cosmos for the next generation. I hope Cosmos becomes a reoccurring series recreated every so many years and updated for the next generation of astronomers and critical thinkers to enjoy and be inspired.

It's hard to imagine Carl Sagan at the kind of party where the possibility exists for a precipitation of tea.

That can't be 10× gravity. Fighter jets and their pilots experience that amount in G-forces (according to relativity, the forces from a 10-G turn and 10× Earth gravity is the same thing). The planet's gravity is far higher than that. According the book Cosmos by Carl Sagan, rocks are crushed under their own weight at 100,000 × Earth gravity. Yes a hollow metal can is more fragile than a rock but it weighs far less. Then again, it tossed out of the gravity "shield" and was falling so that could be the reault of impact. Still that should be at least thousands of times stronger than Earth gravity.

@frankyh101: Carl Sagan's Cosmos. If you go to Hulu and search Cosmos, you will find the entire series. One of the most thought provoking and awe inspiring shows you will find despite it's age.

Basically, what I'm saying is that Astronomers are better at logic AND creativity. Suck it, other disciplines.

Every single map of the universe or galaxy that you see shows the stars as being level. It's only because of convinience and logic that it's like that. Look at subway maps. They're made so they're logical instead of showing the exact route through the city (which is called creative).

@parkerlovesmusic but space-time is three dimensional.. the stars are sitting at the centre of their gravity in not just 2 dimensions as you see in his example, but along a third dimension up and down (if you can picture that). Think of it as a giant 3-d grid, with the stars sitting in their hollow and attracting through their gravity from *every* direction.
