I agree with you a 100% Wilbur, as I think that Carl came into his own during his years with Columbia and Hickory during the 60'sand 70's. This is a very good example of the great material that he put out during that period and shows how much that he had evolved from his time in the 50's trying to be another Hank sound-alike.

Carl was a great singer, but for me the pinnacle of his repertoire was Kisses Never Lie. He does that soft love ballad so beautifully it's remarkable.

A lot of praise of Carl Smith I don't see anywhere else on the net and it's true he pretty much came on his own after becoming another Hank Williams clone which got him the success he had in the 50's. His charted years wasn't yet behind him but he pretty much wanted to make music he believed suited him.

I'm not one Carl Smith's specialist (I like him); about "voice", my preference go to CAL Smith, Ed Bruce, Ronnie Milsap, Bobby Bare...For me, as country music "pupil", I learn the most I use myself (on lead guitars, musical arrangements, dobro -fretted or slide-, bass -Bobby Dyson is one of my "masters" on electric fender bass-) about recordings made from 1968 to 1982 (labels Hickory, Epic, Mercury, Capitol, RCA, MCA has greats recordings on her label). This is only my personal opinion. JO
