I lost my mom last June. I buried her on my 20th birthday. My relatives literally had a lit cake for me at the wake. She was the only person i truly had in this world. She died suddenly of a heart attack at 56. This song reminds me of her❤️

That this song reminds you of her speaks to how beautiful she was. May your tears lead to your heart. I understand. Truly I understand.

I'm still grieving my greatest love, my best friend, my mother. It will be 12 years in November and I ache for her as if I lost her recently. She was the only human to truly love and like and accept me. I feel broken. I'm sending love. I don't know what else I can do.
@RebeccaLynnMusic
@RebeccaLynnMusic 2 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know what about this reminds you of her, if you don't mind saying. My heart always feels broken. I feel very sad that your mother was so young. My mother was 76, and that feels far too young.
@Gregorypeckory

@@RebeccaLynnMusic It's always a terrible loss; always too early. I think the loss will always be with you when you lose someone really close, let alone your mom; that's as deep a connection as one can have. However, I do think it's important to find peace within yourself, and I wish you and the other person who started the thread, good luck with that; please lean on the people who care about you. It is worrying to me if you really believe nobody else cares, accepts and lives you; I hope you're exaggerating, because while the love of one's mother may be unique and irreplaceable, you are undoubtedly loved and cared about by other people if you're not a hermit. If you are then you'll need to get out there and let other people into your life. But it's far more likely that you already have multiple people that care about you and love you. 12 years is too long to get stuck in grief; sometimes you have to force yourself to move forward and find other people to bring you joy again. It doesn't take anything away from the special relationship you had with her, but life is to be lived, not spent missing all those who pass. After all, we could spend all our time sad; life is 100% terminal, and getting stuck in grief means refusing to accept the basic facts; everyone and everything is slipping away, and the only thing we can change is whether to enjoy the ride or spend the precious life you still have, regretting the fact that it's over too quickly. I think the best therapy for grieving people is to find other people in far worse shape than yourself and help them; sometimes you just need to be reminded of the fact that there is always a need for a person who is kind and wants to alleviate suffering. Other than that, I suggest looking into the incredible things being done with therapeutic micro-dosing of psilocybin mushrooms.

If Carla Bley never wrote another song, this would be enough to remember her as one of the greats in contemporary music. But she does and has done so, so very much more. Nevertheless, this is about this song. Simple and complex. The notes and chords are spare yet lush, sophisticated yet accessible. The tempo, haunting yet uplifting. Steve Swallow's bass lines are so perfect throughout and his solo is so touching and his technique is so impressive. I don't know if this song makes me smile or cry. I want to play it at every meaningful event, behind every meaningful media project. We ate breakfast in the same room as Carla and Steve years ago in a Maine hotel one morning. I was so nervous. I never said hello or what a fan I was. But what a smile to be there and soak up the same space. This performance is really nice and matches the beauty of the album cut, even with only two instruments. It's a joy to watch Carla play and Steve, too.

This, in my view, is one of those pieces that was 'discovered' by the writer, rather than composed. The chord sequence dictates the melody, dictates the chord sequence. To the listener, it feels like the piece has always existed, such is its familiarity & perfection.

An interesting life. She played piano as a kid but not much formal training. Went to NYC and learned about jazz from her heroes in the clubs working as a cigarette girl. Later married Eric Bley, the avant-garde pianist and got married. Met Steve Swallow much later on but they have been together for a long time. The story I heard about the name of this tune was when she was in New Orleans and trying to get in touch with one of her fellow performers. When she called and asked for "Lawrence", his mother answered "oh you mean Lawns". I'm not sure if its true of course, but I believe it.

This is what real music is i hate to sound cliche but real artists arent about appearing in magazines and reality tv shows. They dont care about their appearance as much but dont have to because its that that makes them appealing. Their music is art, their music makes them look beautiful too. They arent facing the crowd looking to be accepted. This says,we dont need your approval, let us enjoy playing our music and you enjoy it too. If i saw this live my jaw would be on the floor and id be wiping the tears from my eyes.

Love to you all. Swallow and I met in high school and to Yale afterwards. Wanna know how far back this friendship goes. No, well you and your momma should have some breakfast. We met in 1959, We listened endlessly to all kinds of music. We used to hitchhike down to NYC. And we've stayed in touch all these years. I know where this music comes from in him and later when he met and married My Lady of Carla. SO IT GIVES ME SUCH PLEASURE, JOY ACTUALLY, that those of you who are moved by it It are SO moved by it. Because it's a REAL PLACE, companero/as What you're feeling , hearing, is close to the HEART OF IT ALL. And having the same relationship to the music as whoever of you have and/or do ... plus a friendship of let's see how many years? Ok. 54??!!! ... I feel a profound bond with you. And the same place in you that loves this piece .. understands exactly what I'm saying, yes? So great love and blessings to you all. P
