@crystalheart97 жыл бұрын
I wonder that too because the reactions seem so real and spontaneous. That's what makes it such a great show!
@KeldorDAntrell7 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, what they usually do with comedy shows is do a run through with the guest with the comedian prepping the guest e.g. 'I'll greet you and welcome you to the chair. I'll open with a gag about your last show then I'll ask you how you started in showbusiness. Don't worry, I'll set you up. You just go along with it.' With showbiz celebs they know how this works and wait for the cues that the comedian gives them. The comedian checks with the guest that he's got his basic research facts correct e.g. in the interview with Alan he (Dame Edna) raises the subject of Alan's father's pet pig (to set up the gag about his fictional daughter being 'pig' ugly). At around 14:09 Edna relies on an autocue. This also helps him keep track of the running time of the show which has to include advertisement breaks. The reason why these shows often appear to be totally unrehearsed is most usually apparent with guests who aren't so familier with the technique and don't always pick up on the comedian's cues. This can be risky and has been known to cause the comedian to 'die' horribly but Barry Humphries is experienced enough to work through these moments. He can rely on that funny expression of Edna's with his mouth if he needs to force a laugh at something the guest says that doesn't work. He can also turn to his off-stage assistant (he often uses Madge but here he has his 'daughter') and call for something e.g. a glass of water for the guest who 'seems a bit tongue-tied', or whatever. This method of priming the guest also allows the comedian to come out with a totally unexpected, perhaps risque or insulting gag that the guest, because they were set up, genuinely does not expect. With the old pros, they know to roar with laughter and roll with the punches but guests who aren't so experienced can end up giving priceless reactions because they are genuinely shocked or offended and left dumbfounded. The comedian has usually given the guest some idea of the tone of their humour to try to ensure the guest doesn't punch them in the eye or strom off the stage but such things have been known to happen. The Bee Gees on the Clive Anderson's show is one that springs to my mind. The comedian can always adjust the routine if he detects that the guest isn't working well or even cut it short with a quick, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Alan Alda!' that signals the interview has come to an end. At that point it might be, 'Roll commercials' and run!
@angeloddrev6 жыл бұрын
Dame Edna did an interview on someone else's show and managed to offend the singer Mika. He kinda snapped back at her, even though Edna just said the usual fodder that we all know & expect. (Edna basically complemented him a lot then said he hadn't heard of him) Mika was sarcastic back a little later, saying straight back at Edna's face If only you had heard of me, in a not nice way. Edna touched his arm and said really quietly, I meant no offence, and carried on in a loud voice some more jokes. It was really sweet and touching, he quickly calms the fire if someone gets insulted. Idk what was up with Mika, Edna has made that joke for years!
