The thing is Subaru has to be where Emilia and the others are because that's the best way to utilize RBD and save them from their fate. This way, he can understand the threat and prepare countermeasures against it. As a result, he has no choice but to break his promise to stay in the capital. It's also tricky since he can't control that power. He knows that he resets upon death, but he can't change the checkpoint on his own accord. Imagine if he just stayed in the capital for days and the checkpoint moves to a point in time when everyone in the village and mansion are already dead. That's a possibility that Subaru can't afford to deal with.

It's honestly such a hard thing to do, and the thing that sometimes is forgotten often because it happens so often is that Subaru has to kill himself to reset the events that transpire It's no painless act, and it's definitely traumatic, it's one of the hardest things to do actually, you're literally ending your life to save others, again and again

Well, he did notice the bodies just at the scale of gruesomeness they were killed took him out of it & late to process. Everyone warned him, yet he ignored them only to confront the truth which is way bloodier in person. Also, after dog arc should've been cleared up, but witches scent is strong when either he dies & returns by death (RBD) or tries to tell he can RBD. So not Emilia related and also that's the reason why maids didn't trust him, as he had the scent get stronger every restart and they didn't know him at all & kept killing him (cuz of what happened to their village)

After Subaru became enemies with all the knights,beat him down in front of everyone is the best way to settle this thing.Not every knight will fight you openly and honestly,he might be backstabbed in an alley or something worse. Sadlly as a neet,Subaru didn't understand those social things.

For context: In this episode Subaru was being a VERY bad person. He keeps thinking about himself as Emilia's undeniable "savior" despite being utterly powerless and because of that he was literally wanting for something bad to happen just so he could "fix it" and prove to Emilia that she needs to depend on him. That's why he smiled every time someone mentioned that Emilia herself or her position as a candidate was going to be endangered by the presence of the witches cult. And that's also why when he sees the huge pile of corpses and that Rem was dead he says: "This isn't what I wanted" (admitting to himself that he wanted something terrible to happen but now that his wish came true he just sees how horrible he was for wanting that).

The smile you're talking about always shows stress around his eyes though, if you pay attention his expression is kind of divided between a smile and pain. Because he's blocking out what him proving himself to Emilia would actually mean. His sentences are the same, he says "Emilia is useless without me... Because I care about her so much" I can't remember the exact words but the latter is the deeper feeling. The beginning is what he tells himself but knows isn't true. It's just what he keeps lying to himself about so he doesn't feel useless and alone.

Because he subconsciously perceives every insult to Emilia as an insult to him), but he definitely was wanting something bad to happen just so he could "fix it" and be Emilia's "savior" and smiling every time he heard that there was something bad that could need his "help" to be solved. As I said, that's literally why when he saw the massacre and regrets his own horrible thoughts he says: "This isn't what I wanted"

He says this isn't what I wanted knowing it was, but he also is basically right: he wanted to fix the thing, he denied that this means the thing happening first. He was avoiding admitting the implications of what he wanted were this, but that's not at all the same as directly wanting this. It's like, say you're sick of your job and say "I deserve better than the people around me, wish I got a raise." then you get a raise after your colleagues are fired and regret it blaming yourself. Does this mean you directly wished for them being fired? No. Is it understandable to interpret that way and say you indirectly wished for it? Yes. But I have no idea how Subaru's thoughts make him a bad person anyway. Everyone has internal struggles and conflicts, we're just seeing all his layers directly.

Yeah, Subaru has an obsessive possessive view of love for Emilia. Her input doesn't matter, he only mince words to please her or say the "right" thing, as if she is a NPC and not a person. He is stuck in this idea he is the protagonist of this world and the others are secondaries to his story. I like how they explore this toxic behavior with this character.

Even from a non-NPC viewpoint, this theory stands. Subaru uses his pride as justification for his actions. His worldview is warped around his insecurity and his inability to see his place. Like with the protagonist syndrome, he is foolhardily clinging to the one thing he did well - his ability to keep people safe.

Eh, I don't think he's stuck with the idea he's the protagonist at all by this point. The reason he acts the way he acts is because, so far, he HAS been the only one capable of saving Emilia and the people in the Roswaal territory. It's not an excuse for his prickly behaviour, but saying he's toxic and possessive is a bit of a reach when, if that was the case, he would've used his power way more selfishly from the start instead of self-sacrificingly. He is being an asshat this arc, but he does kind of have a reason to believe what he thinks.

His "self-sacrifice" is in fact quite selfish, because he wants to "save" all those people because (1) he himself doesn't want to lose them, not for their sake but for his own enjoyment of their company and (2) his "saving" of people is a desperate attempt to prove its worth, it's a compensation for the powerlessness he truly feels. So all the things he does are from his own perceived lacks and needs. . How apparent caring or love or self-sacrifice can be selfish.... it is indeed something most cannot comprehend. I will say, noticing those subtle nuances in someone's behavior, especially one's own behavior, can be quite tricky. :)

Subaru was traumatized from being tortured by Rem, to the point he started self-harming just so he wouldn't be vulnerable, in the only place where he found comfort in a world he was forcefully thrown into. A place he was INVITED to, after saving Emilia. Despite that, he sacrificed himself to save her, because he saw kindness in her despite how horridly he was treated by Rem. You're creating your own world by implying Subaru, a 17-year-old boy incapable of properly communicating his own feelings and thus uses his own life to express them, is selfish and malicious, which is just not true in the slightest. He wants to prove his worth not because he wants to be owed to, but because that's the only way he knows is a sure-fire way to be accepted. It's the only thing he knows, which is why he breaks down in episode 8 in the first place. Saying his self-sacrifice is malicious is disregarding the pain that comes from it in the first place. If he truly was as malicious as you imply, he would've ran away after the third loop when he arrived to Lugunica, instead of running head-first into a situation where he was bound to suffer just to save people he didn't know all that well in the first place. Subaru is an asshole during this arc, but it is very common for people with PTSD to have bursts of anger in the first place, and Subaru is very justified in his in the first place. He is manipulated, humilliated, insulted, all because he wants to save people important to him, or because he wants to take revenge on the people who made him suffer (Which is extremely hypocritical coming from certain characters). What i'm saying is that Subaru isn't malicious at all, and implying he is misses a big part of his character, which is that he is a kind-hearted and self-sacrificing idiot who is too mentally scarred and immature to properly express that. Of course, not understanding this is very common, seeing as most anime fans seem to lack any kind of reading comprehension and take everything at face value, thus disregarding any past actions of a certain character just to hate them because that's what the show wants you to do.

Ram is the only one that called Subaru “Barusu” (which is taking the “su” from his name and putting it at the end). That’s why you haven’t heard that for a while because Rem has never called him that. Saying that Emilia could be the Witch of Envy because Subaru’s scent keeps becoming stronger, and connecting that to being around Emilia seems unlikely… because that would mean that they would be able to smell Emilia as the Witch of Envy. And if she was the source of the smell of the Witch, then it would mean that Roswaal and the maids would also have the scent. The scent of the Witch grows stronger each time Subaru dies and resets. Crusch doesn’t seem like the kind of person that wants to be on the good side of Emilia because she fears her (in thinking she could be the Witch of Envy). She seems too brave, upright, and noble for that. And sometimes, there may be no ulterior motives in everyone encouraging Subaru and Emilia to make up… sometimes they wish that because they are good people, and think Subaru and Emilia are good people, and many people actually like a good ship. ^_^ We may not wanna go too overboard with the conspiracy theories, lol.

People really like to try and defend Subaru's views during this point, as if having a reason to be a pretty selfish and possessive somehow makes it right. Yes, it's true that Subaru has reason to justify himself, everyone does, as far as he or we know Subaru is the only solution, with that said, his mentality for going about it is still no less twisted. He wants to save the village and Emilia, but for selfish reasons, such as providing himself and that he still "deserves' Emilia, as if Emilia would still owe him anything. It's completely possible for Subaru to do all the great things he's trying to do, and even keep some of the self centered aspects, if he would recognize and keep them in check.
