Ange is really right here, Maomao really sees how low she is in the rankings, she could make one small mistake and her head could roll. Jinshi really hates that for one that she is openly talking about that and without any big emotions, but it also pains him because he keeps giving her these big tasks that could easily get her killed. I think this episode is the first time he gets it that he keeps playing with her life.

The conversation of Jinshi and Mao Mao at the end is heavy indeed. It doesn't matter how much Jinshi wants to protect her, for now it's not easy. Mao Mao's position as commoner is risky. How little the higher-ups may think of a commoner's life. She can make mistakes intentionally or unintentionally like to protect someone or because of her curiosity, higher-ups can blame her with any reasons even out of nothing, etc. In the rear palace now, Jinshi is in charge and if anything happens there, Jinshi can somehow take control like giving punishment. Here at least Mao Mao can voice her opinion which punishment she wants, but not everyone can do that as they receive any punishment. At least this is Jinshi, if Mao Mao talks like this to other higher-ups, it may be considered rude. Her life is so risky and that's why she's being extra cautious. Like if she names the culprit right away like 'this person killed him', if this person somehow can get away or this person is higher-up and he/she gave scapegoat or fake alibi etc, and this person somehow says it's defamation to them or something, they could be like "oh Mao Mao told us", that is why she told them indirectly so she can somehow get away from it. Just me doing what-if, to see scenarios if Mao Mao got punished. It's not about he wants to make sure that won't, but if he can do it or not. If it's like that emperor's request to treat Lihua before, if Mao Mao failed and Lihua died, Jinshi couldn't really protect her when emperor and high concubine involved. Well, he may try to defend her but how much can he do now? 🤔

I think you two are a little confused with the Au-Duo relationship with the both Emperor, she was NOTHING to the last decesead Emperor, never was his concubine, she was the first and for a long time the only concubine for the atual Emperor and only that.

It was really tough back then, the reality of things is that everyone is expendable more so the lower you go in ranks and well women all the more so yeah. Maomao has always been aware of it, like how in the very beginning she didn't want to draw attention to herself to avoid any chance to make "mistakes" or anything that can have her killed on a whim. As things turned up, she is really deep in the sauce now, and got a bit shaken there.

You guys are confused. Concubine Ah Duo has nothing to do with the previous emperor. She was already the concubine of the current emperor when the previous emperor was still alive. Concubine Lishu was concubine for the previous emperor. After the precious emperor died, Concubine Lishu became the concubine of the current emperor. Reason why such arrangements happened will be explained.
