This is a really fun subject matter. Got some respect for two guys who can say “We are good enough to go big. Let’s go big” and then go ahead and do it. They had the pinash to say “yeah 1 million copies isn’t enough. We gotta go bigger.” I think that attitude really fit in the 90s, where strong attitudes stood out and excelled. To quote a KZbinr of a bygone era, “they were like the Beatles. They could release a game in a new genre and set the bar at the same time.”

I remember how crushed I felt after reading about the buyout in Game Informer as a kid. And I felt like things went downhill in the years to come. But as an adult I realize that it wasn’t downhill, just up a different hill (on a console that I didn’t have lol). And I believe part of Rare’s massive success in the 90’s was a product of its time; being proficient in 3D visuals, programming and having composers who knew their way around sound chips propelled them to the front on the cusp of huge technological shift. If you look at the leaked build of Dinosaur Planet for N64 you’ll see just how much they could push the limits of the hardware. Most 3D felt impressive back then cause they were new, but lots of those 3D games failed to master the art of “good game-feel” like Rare did.

Really enjoyed the video! Wanted to point out that Rare did not develop, nor really have much involvement with Killer Instinct 2013. Also, there are still a handful of people still there from the N64 and earlier days - including the lead designer of Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie (Gregg Mayles), an artist from Diddy Kong Racing (Paul Cunningham), the creator of Stop N Swop for Banjo-Kazooie and Game Boy programmer (Paul Machecek), and four members of the original Conker team (Robin Beanland, Louise O'Connor [Ridgeway], Andy Betts, and Chris Marlow). Considering most teams in the 90s were 15 people, that's a good amount! Also two QA mainstays are still there (Huw Ward and David Wong). And Ken Lobb, who assisted with Killer Instinct and GoldenEye on behalf of Nintendo, is now a creative director at Xbox, so still involved to some degree!

Great video. To give some leeway to Rare for Sea of Thieves, the idea of releasing a game early, and adding in the content later seems to be a Microsoft problem, not necessarily a Rare problem. It's possible that even if Rare felt like they needed more time for the game, MS probably wouldn't allow it. Hopefully it's an attitude MS turns around on (as well as hiring a lot of contract workers), cause it's really starting to bite them in the ass with games like Halo Infinite. Hopefully Rare are able to turn things around, though considering the people who made Rare what they are aren't with the company anymore, it'll be a hard road ahead of them.

23:54 Funny you should mention that, considering the photo used here is from 2015 when they founded their mobile game studio Fortune Fish. Tim Stamper still has a presence on social media, as infrequent as it is, but he was the guy who still had a ROM of Project Dream and helped get it online back in 2015 through Rare's YT channel. He even recently started teasing some more hidden relics as of this week actually. 24:55 Killer Instinct, while yes, had a bit of input from Rare, they were not the primary developers, that being Double Helix and later Iron Galaxy -- those guys deserve most of the praise for that game. I recognize the love and passion for Rare, though there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding them that still persist today. You dispelled a few (and kudos for taking your lumps with Kinect Sports' sales) though there's quite a few gaps that I feel should've been highlighted -- the studio still has several veterans for instance, with one dating back to the Ultimate days. Still, I have faith you'll continue to grow if you keep it up.

A small addendum is that the 2013 Killer Instinct isn't even from Rare, it was a Rare property licensed out to Double Helix, who then passed it onto Iron Galaxy for support. Still a super cool game though.

Great video, subscribed. Personally I think Nintendo messed up big time by letting Rare go. I don't know if it's because expectations for their games were set high. And the games weren't hitting the mark nintendo likely deemed they should. (They spent like $20 million in marketing for DK 64 and it didn't beat DKC on snes) or how Banjo and its sequel failed to surpass 5 million. They likely felt it wasn't worth keeping. Especially after Conker's controversies and poor sales. I still think letting the team who made Donkey Kong Country go is arguably their biggest mismanagement of the 2000s. DK didn't really get jack squat on gamecube. Rare could have done so much more with the character.

Nah, I used to think that too. But after seeing how mediocre the games Rare made after leaving Nintendo. Nintendo saw the writing on the wall and cut them loose. You can blame Microsoft, but at the end, they were the developers. They just made shitty games after Nintendo, and Nintendo saw that happening.

@neoasura I don't know. I think some of their games have been good. Prefect Dark was good. Sea of Thieves with a full crew is fun. Viva Pinata isn't for everyone but is a good game overall. Grabbed by the ghoulies I think gets too much hate, and dare I say Nuts and Bolts does too.

It's because Nintendo was struggling to compete with Sony, so Nintendo wanted focus on Retro studios instead. Not buying Rare means that Nintendo has less responsibility and they save money. I have a hard time believing that Nintendo is smart enough to watch over three western studios, because in addition to buying Retro they also good relationship with Next level games. Nintendo rarely buys companies.

Been with Rare since the early 90's with Battletoads being the first game from them I ever played. However it has been really-really heartbreaking to see Rare's downfall over the years since 2002 and on. Even if they still exist, they are not the company they was. Microsoft bought them, did not know what to do with them, forcing them to doo Kinect titles and having a 100% generic & plain logo. Gone was that saphire blue and gold colors. Gone the great creativity. They really were one of the greats in their heyday. Arguably THE best in the late 1990's as so many rival companies copied there sucsess for there own games.

@@DeadPlayin Rare may be hit and miss now a-days, but they left a HUGE legacy. Conker's Bad fur day was a huge inspiration to Rachet and Clank. Chris Seavor who created Conker has formed his own studio Gory Detail. Diddy Kong Racing was a big inspiration for Crash Team Racing, which got a remake. Banjo Kazooie was a big inspiration for Hat in Time, Demon Turf Neon Slash, Tinykin, Jack and Daxter. Miyamoto wanted Metroid Prime to be a first person Shooter because he believed that "shooting in third person was not very intuitive". What made him think that, Jet Force Gemini.

Simply *amazing* story. You did a *fantastic* job. You have a new sub and I'm spreading the word to all my friends about this channel. Thank you. Rare was a beast in the 90s, but always kept it together in a way no other company has. Say what you want about Microsoft, but their gaming division lets these companies shine on their own, and are willing to pour money into them without rushing them out. Sure, they have been as bad as other companies, but as a whole, XBox Gaming is a fantastic umbrella to be under.

I think what i loved about RareWare was their games were made with so much creativity and passion. Any existing genre theyd put a spin on it. I even liked their 360 era of games despite how poorly they sold.

If there’s one thing Sea of Thieves and many other titles launched these past 10 years by many other developers prove is that there’s still room and even NEED for the creativity and passion in the industry that was so characteristic of Rare since the NES era. I always thought that Rare games were much different than most games. Mario is made by a big company named Nintendo, Sonic is made by a big company named Sega, but Donkey Kong Country was carefully handcrafted by people who just love making games and have a blast doing so. And they just happened to work at the same developer called Rare.

Whenever I think of Rare, I remember how nostalgic the games were. For the most part, the games were innocent (with the exception of Konkers bad fur day). They didn't need multiplayer, they didn't need a thousand mechanics, they didn't need top of the line graphics, you very seldom turned the game off feeling angry or upset because you aren't good enough. All they needed was a story, and fun game play. It's criminal, how kids will never experience Rare games. How they will never experience a game that was so good, you come back to it 20 years later, as a full-grown adult, just to play it again. To kids nowadays, they'll look back at CoD or Fortnite the way we look back at Rare games, and that's a shame. Not many parents actually did their due-diligence back then, either - but had they, they would know Rare games were always child-friendly (again for the most part). You didn't need to worry about your kid turning on the video game, and hearing all of these profane words, slurs, or who they were playing with. The sad part is - Rare's innocence in game-creating would not have survived the test of time. Had Rare kept making games, they would've failed. They would have failed not due to the quality of the games, but because of the quality of today's kids. The vast majority of kids that are at the age of which we were when we were enjoying Rare games - those kids? They're complete trash. They're raised by garbage parents, they turn out to be trash kids, and they grow up to be trash adults. Sorry to be crude, but it's the truth. It's why kids in elementary school come home saying "nigga this" and "nigga that" like they're 25. (I live across the street from an elementary school) I hear it way too frequently. These kids today need to put the Fortnite down, the Call of Duty down. They need to step away from online gaming in general, and play some story driven games. Not just Rare games, either. They need to experience what gaming SHOULD be, and not what it currently is.
