For added security, have you considered putting a group of false sets? Additional notches for the pins to go in that don't line up but would at least give the illusion that it has been cracked. It won't be a huge hindrance, but it would at least slow someone down if they simply try to solve it with trial-and-error brute forcing.
@CarlJacobson10 жыл бұрын
Captain Shoutyface. That's a good idea, I haven't played around with the design much.
@mindhackerrr10 жыл бұрын
I don't believe that would work. The way it is now every dial needs to be set correctly for it to provide any feedback. Additional full length notches would add solutions (so SHARE and SHAVE might both work), while half-notches would tell the code-breaker that they have some of the letters correct - it would still take a long time, but not as much as having to try every possible solution. False sets would be good if there were only one pin, but since every dial has it's own pin it doesn't need any.
@SynS7ven10 жыл бұрын
***** Well, you wouldn't make full notches, just a half notch, or whatever. Remember the old bike locks? You can pick those easy. You just pull on it a tiny bit then turn the dials till you get some play from side to side then move to the next one. I would make every second letter a false notch with only one of them being a full notch. Then I would make it all a bit tighter so you don't get any of that side to side play when it's locked. Not fool proof, but an improvement. You just need to take your time and clean your edges and round your corners so you don't get jammed up.

let me start by saying I like the piece, but slow down! Patience isn't just a virtue, in wood working it should be your first thought. Your tools aren't supposed to chatter and the forsner bits shouldn't be smoking like a house fire! Also putting a caliper on a spinning blank is not only impatient but dangerous.At one point your lathe almost jumped off the table.
@InTentZManIpulSation6 жыл бұрын
In every single other woodworking example I'd agree. But in just this ONE, (boring a cylinder you want another cylinder to freely spin in,) I feel like the effect burning has on the wood (almost making it more plastic feeling than wood,) might actually be desirable in this ONE instance. Not that I'd ever intentionally dull any blade for any reason, just saying in this ONE instance; I would've pressed on to rather than stopping making my video to go buy a new bit. Lol

Lovely bit of craftsmanship, wish I'd paid more attention in woodwork class :) I've had people grumble about the length of some of my videos, the solution was to put a ten-second index at the start of the video, so if someone wants to jump straight to a bit they're interested in they can see what time to scroll to. Handy if (like this one) you can't chop it down any further without losing something important.
