Wonderful project! Along with making one for my dog, I think this would be a great project to make a small version of for my 8-week-old kitten, but with a bell in it. He loves to chase and pounce on things, so this would make a great toy for him to hunt and kitten-kill ;) Keep up the great ideas!

What size #1 hollower do you use? I can only seem to find the medium size and feel like I would like the larger size.
@CarlJacobson3 күн бұрын
It's the med-size, I use it all the time I really like that the cutter head is small.

That's beautiful, Carl. I don't know why more turners don't leave the outside natural but instead turn away the character. Bill

Beautiful piece of wood. Had wondered how one might turn a piece of wood like that while preserving the peaks. Really like how you turned it and preserved those pieces.

Very nice piece. Does the pressure washer increase the moisture content of the wood? If so, how did you dry it and how long did it take?
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
Thank you Tom! It doesn't really increase the moisture content. It only takes a few minutes to get the bark off. I turned this about an hour after I pressure washed it.
@homerlex6 күн бұрын
So cool. All I kept thinking was "I would not want to get hit by that if it popped off the lathe. "
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
Thank you! Yes you would not want to get hit with it. That would be some major road rash 😐

Hi Carl, Great video and project. Question, are you using the same factory grind on the Boxmaster tool or have you modified the angles? If so, what did you change? Please advise. Thanks, Myles
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
Thank you Myles! I didn't change the grind at all it's the same one that came with it.

I am so envious of that burl. I guess you get a lot of it in Oregon? Looks as hard as Texas Ebony or Mesquite?
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
Yes we're pretty lucky there is quite a bit of it here in Oregon. It's not quite as hard as Ebony or Mesquite but it turns very well.

Absolutely beautiful piece of burl. I’m curious though, since you didn’t turn the bottom does it actually sit level.
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
Thank you! This piece is almost perfectly round and sits flat. If it was a different shape I might have had to take a little bit more off the bottom to have it set properly.

Carl, did you have to stabilize the wood before you turned it?
@CarlJacobson6 күн бұрын
No it didn't need it.
@CarlJacobson7 күн бұрын
In this video I turned a Maple burl cap into a bowl. I pressure wash the bark off first to expose the wood. Pressure washing is the best way to remove bark from really any piece of wood. It's is 12" across and 3" deep.
