There are few brands which have gained the popularity of Filson in recent years while also having such an extensive history. Of course, the Filson of today is much different than the C.C. My wife and I walked into the local Filson here in Columbus for the first time last weekend. We were the only two in there and the guys working asked how we were doing. We explained it was our first date in 16 months due to having a new baby who was spending the night with grandma for the first time. The guys looked at each other and then proceeded to pull out a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel and poured us both LARGE drinks. We stayed there and chatted for quite some time. Forty years buying Filson products for myself, my wife and my two sons. All of my stuff was made in the USA, as I have had no reason to buy any of the newer stuff in 15 years for myself. For me the jewel of Filson has always been their customer service. Prompt, polite, professional and personable. Not sure what it is like now but about 15 years ago, one of our dogs had chewed all the buttons off of my old discontinued Woolrich Stag Shirt. I called Woolrich to see if I could buy some replacement buttons but they could not even identify the item nor had any idea what type of buttons to provide. Having struck out I contact the customer service folks with Filson asking them for some buttons for my Mackinaw wool vest, which were just about the same size. After I shared my button eating dog story with the person, she not only sent me a full set of Filson buttons to replace the gnawed and broken buttons on my Woolrich stag shirt, she refused to allow me to pay for them or the shipping. For that reason, I still get Filson stuff for my sons and highly recommend Filson to anyone who spends time outside. For the record, all of my Filson gear looks virtually new even after years of farm work.

You made me run around looking for my rucksack to check the label - no mention of Sri Lanka. OK, I’ve been a longtime fan of Filson. One Mac, two Double Macs, a Tin Coat, the aforementioned ruck, a few hats, gloves and lotsa socks later, I’m still a fan. Except for the socks and gloves with their unknown origin, I’ve only bought Made In The USA products, though I suspect the “Tin” canvas is Australian sourced just like Barbour’s. The Mac saw me through six or seven South Dakota winters before the elbows became threadbare, the cuffs started unravelling, and a hammer spur wore a hole at the 3 o’clock position. The hole was patched, and the cuffs were darned, but I haven’t stitched patches on the elbows yet. Once brown, it’s faded to green. It remains a wonderful Fall/Winter jacket, but is now retired to the closet and has been replaced by an Arc’teryx LEAF Atom LT until that catches sparks or wears out. The Double Macs are really too warm for the Black Hills, but the red plaid one and matching fleece-flapped hat do get worn around Christmas. The damned Tin Coat is indeed waterproof, but requires something bulky inside as it’s friggin’ cold and rough all by itself. This one aged well and I’ve often considered the matching pants, but really, if it’s that horrible out I’ll just stay inside or resign myself to getting wet. I wear the Tin Cap pretty often and while it’s overkill for light rain it’s great for sleet. When Filson started the “Seattle” line I figured the real stuff was gone and they’d gone all hipster. While I haven’t bought any Filson in years, the local gunshop carries many of the old school products, and to my eye they’re still high quality. OK, that was longer than expected. But you asked for feedback, right? (Edit: Just noted on the Filson site that Mac wool material is now imported.)

Great video. I have now been around to witness the domestication of brands like Filson and Orvis and now Carhatt, and my dad used to go on and on about how Abercrombie and Fitch used to sell fishing rods and rifles and tents when he was a kid. It's business. It happens. And they've got a good enough brand name they probably won't get drowned out by all the other "outdoor lifestyle" brands that will probably come and go.

Not entirely, but the trajectory of Filson (in branding especially) is a little similar to A&F in the sense that there was a time when A&F was respected for its products (even things like barometers), but then pivoted towards younger/superficial segments of society.

As an owner of over 50 Filson garments I’ve seen the company evolve over time. I still consider it to be one of the great American outdoor clothing companies and have not been disappointed at all in the quality of their flag ship items. Their shirts coats vest etc. are all we wear hunting and I’m a very loyal customer. Yes it is true that prices have continued to increase...I guess I just consider it investment clothing.... i’ve turned seven or eight people onto the company and they all love the gear

I'm a bushcrafter. Years ago when I started I set about getting gear for my adventures and there was this legendary thread on a bushcraft forum where the folks on there gave their opinions on what the sturdiest clothing on the market was. Filson came up several times. It is ridiculously expensive, but I got some tin pants that are iincredibly tough. Immune to briars, mud, and rain.

I love my Filson but it is overpriced. I do not expect it to be cheap or free but I have watched prices continually go up over the last 10 years. A perfect example of them going off the rails and possibly losing their die hard customers is going on right now. They have just released Rugby shirts on their site. I just shook my head. I love their classic lines and stick with what works. I am always willing to pay more for Made in the USA. Classic look never goes out of style. When the fads are over I will still have my classics, my beard, and continue to be who I am.

I have owned a number of Filson items through the years. I have worn my Double Mac every winter for over 20 years and it still fantastic (I have had a couple of small repairs made at the pocket attachment points and the cuffs are getting frayed). I have plenty of modern bags, but I almost exclusively use my Filson Small Duffel for overnights and weekends. The bag is a super basic canvas bag with a narrow access hole and virtually no interior organization, but I still love it more than anything else. I have worn out a pair of whipcord wool pants (sadly) and my favorite blanket in the house is still my Queen sized Mackinaw wool that my wife doesn't really appreciate because she doesn't like the dark checked pattern. I had a Wool Weekender for years that I sold for over $100 and I recently sold a mackinaw wool vest for $100. Not a bad return on items that were 10-15 years old and heavily used. I am bummed about a lot of the changes at Filson, especially the prices, but I still absolutely love the items I own.

I have many Filson products from the last 40 years. The cotton cruiser vests are the only things that I wore out. In 1988 it was a very active wildfire season working 16 hour days seven days a week. I bought my first Filson mackinaw wool cruiser coat and it still almost like new. I have had the Filson Sportsmans Bag and computer briefcase for 16 years and they are going strong. I just purchased Filson Rucksack and zippered tote bag and expect them to last a long time.

I still have my Filson gear which I bought in the 90's which I bought for working on our farm in North Dakota and for hunting. - Tin overalls, Double Tin Logger Jacket, Double Tin Pants, Tin Vest, Tin Cruiser and some bags and upland boots that are discontinued now. I used the same items when I worked on the oil rigs before regulations switched to fire retardant clothing. That tin cloth doesn't breath at all and when it gets cold it's like wearing aluminum. Everything is still in good and wearable condition and I only use it when I'm back at the farm during hunting season. I've gone through hundreds of cans of wax to refinish them. Some of the pants don't fit me anymore after 30 years though. It's weird to see it become a luxury casual clothing line.

My grandpa was the head garment cutter at CCFilson from 1940? to maybe 1956. I was born 1943 and grew up visiting the factory by the ViaDuct to see Grandpa. Being enticed by floor ladies with special cookies. He won an award during WWII for cutting the most shirts for soldiers. Remember him crawling around on an 18" pile of plaid fabric using a vertical saw with no guards. Those plaids were perfectly matched in the garment. The growth in the past 25 years, and the prices, is amazing.

A few brands with a similar aesthetic are Oris, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Arcteryx, Flint and Tinder, Taylor Stitch, some Gustin stuff, Bestmade, Woolrich, and Pendleton Woolen Mills. Their fits will be much different but worth exploring!

This is the one thing I don't get about this modern rugged lifestyle. Price some people pay for things... I get a good boot or a leather jacket. But 150$ for a shirt? 350$ for jeans? 70$ for a t-shirt? Don't get that.

It all depends on what goes into the product. A one-man-brand will charge more because its mostly done by hand and a true craftsman makes the piece. Some brands charge these prices but have everything automated and can yield a lot more product in a work day. So while I understand $350 for a pair of handmade custom jeans or a really rare fabric shirt, I agree that larger brands aren't typically worth it. You also need to remember that they have MUCH more overhead than a small shop with big executive bonuses to pay etc.

You're paying for the brand. Go to a local cobbler/leather shop. They'll even sketch your design for you with your dimensions. I have amassed a huge collection of leather goods for less than maybe 300USD. Compare this with these brands (sometimes machine stitched like some "luxury brands" out there).

Look at the tags and the zippers (if there are any). Older luggage will have Talon zippers and a white logo with the old tag line, newer models will have a black diamond logo with no tag line. Also the older wool coats will have sizing like 40,42,44 etc. where the new ones are S,M,L,XL. the very old coats have black snaps with white Filson lettering.

I’ve purchased many filson products over the years for me and my boys. All of those products held up well and the repair department took care of us if they didn’t hold up. It’s been a few year ago that I finished with filson. I had one of there double leather $100 belts that the snaps needed replaced. Instead of replacing the snaps they used rivets for the repair, which does not allow me to use my USMC buckles. I don’t think they like veterans or at least the old viet nam ones.

It is hard for Filson to compete with modern clothing. I wore a Filson tin cloth jacket for years. It was a well made jacket. I was once running out the door and the door knob hooked on the pocket and stopped me. The jacket did not tear. The tin cloth wool combination was very heavy. Now, I wear a Mountain Hardware jacket that is 1/3 of the weight, performs better, and considerably cost less than the Filson. It might not last as long.

Overpriced I wont say BS bc the stuff I bought was great. 1987 30th birthday and I bought a Green Mackinaw for $89 (1/2 off) at Dunns when I rode the National Field Trial Championship for Bird Dogs and wore it to shreds and still do when chopping wood or in the garden. Tomorrow I turn 66 and I have to tell ya Johnson Woolen Mill or Bemidji Woolen Mill sell great Mackinaw Wool Bibs for $237 to $279 that is equal to the $495 by Filson for example. I wont spend $975 for a good Packer coat when I'm in the high country Elk hunting I can tell ya that.

If you're looking at a filson's product don't bother it if it isn't made in USA. Like you said, the tin workwear and the twill are the last solid materials they still work with. Their wool has gone down considerably in quality.

I didn't knw they changed hands so many times as well as the leadership changes. I've bought a few items but they became too pricey for me. I have a few hats and a packer coat and another wool coat and had tin pants but they got too small and were sold in a garage sale. Trying to wax the packer coat and it's a pain in the butt, gotta be an easier way to do this, maybe melt the stuff and brush it on a hot coat to let it soak in.

FIlson has pretty much discontinued all the clothing products I purchased over the years... and I bought a lot of it as it held up to the uses I put it too. I lament not being able to replace the Tin and Shelter cloth items that I've worn out (sometimes 2 or 3 times) and comparable products are not available. I accept that I'll replace the Orvis and LL Bean items more frequently than the discontinued Filson. All the wool coats and vests, and the Twill luggage and brief case should outlast me. No more Filson boots... Nick's from here on out!

Very nice video!! You and I have communicated before- I own a LOT of Wool and Tin Cloth Filson products. I own a horse farm - and while I’m a business man - and am often in a suit - however I also put my items through the rigors of hard daily use and have appreciated Filson quality. Their Tin Cloth and mackinaw wool have been great values. The company has gone too trendy for me. Im older and a bit crusty. I’ll pay for quality, but not to impress folks. The Range Rover was a great analogy. I’ve had Rovers...horrible cars. A Land-cruiser is less prestigious but a far better value and we’ve liked ours. Filson has gone a direction I don’t like - but I’m no longer their target customer. That’s OK... the items I own will outlast me. You do a good job on your reviews.

Love that vid! Have you ever take into consideration, that it should be longer than 5-8 mins? I believe that YT will cut your views, if Vid is no longer than 10 min. It's hard to watch when company such as Filson try to catch up with other, world-wide brands... I have same problem with one of my fav. company- Bytom. They try to fight with fast-fashion brand such as Zara, HM etc... Finger cross for both of them! What about levi's company? Maybe next episode? When it comes to Filson mostly this modern Filson just stick to their field clothing like wool products and tin cloth, shelter cloth, waxed canvas products and you'll get great products.

@@CarlMurawski it was! I only have three pieces of items from Filson- the mackinaw jacket, a tin cloth work/field jacket (I got on sale), and medium duffle bag. All worthwhile items, as they can and will last a very long time. But then I took a look at the flannels and was like, wtf? $140 for a flannel? So I moved on from Filson. I do love their marketing material, though, they send to people though, the photographs are pretty dope. I mostly get my stuff from Rogue Territory these days. As pricey, but made in LA.

I love those type wool products but I can only afford to buy them 2nd hand if and when I can find them i do buy them .I have a pair of red plad woolrich woodsmans pants that I figure are from the forties I only wear them when it's well below freezing because they are heavyweight and the legs lace up just below the knees. And I have had them since the 80s only thing replaced on them was the legs laces .

Thats a really good strategy though since their wool is so hard-wearing it basically looks new many years down the line. I say Filson is a fantastic second hand brand.

I own a lot of filson products. I love everything I've bought from them, especially anything mackinaw and made in America. I also like their limited edition, made in Canada, cowichan sweaters and their Scottish made sweaters. They've done a lot of interesting things. I'm a big fan and am glad they exist. Although prices have risen quite a bit, especially in the past couple of years, I'm typically patient and try to pick up their stuff when its on sale. I do not use their stuff for work. If I'm doing work around the house or on cars, i prefer to use old worn clothes that i no longer care about. There's nothing like the down home warmth of wool. Absolutely love it.

Oh, maaaan. I wish I had watched this sooner. I'm a 18 yr old guy over by the Olympic mountains. Whether for blacksmithing or landscaping, I've never spent $200 on a piece of clothing. After only 2 weeks of wearing around town, my ccf Filson bibs have significantly ripped seems - most notably the right suspender. I've never heard of Carhartts degrading this quickly. It's a huge bummer. For what they are, they are extremely overpriced. Rather naively, I expected years out of these bibs because of what I had heard and read of Filson. Lame.

Once was a Filson poster boy, had A LOT of their stuff. Then they started changing. Nowadays it seems they're more interested in being 'trendy'. THE only thing in their lineup I would consider again is another single Mackinaw, assuming it's USA made today. Otherwise, forget about it.

Thank you for doing the research and presenting the history of Filson. Yes, these items are a bit pricey to say the least, but you can't beat the Mackinaw Cruiser if you want a quality wool jacket. Wool is the best. Another great presentation.

That wool is excellent, a proprietary blend from Pendleton Woolen Mills! I actually have my fathers old mackinaw cruiser from the 1970s!

My grandad was a Pacific Northwest logger all of his life expect for a period when he was a commercial fisherman in Alaska. Both two of the most dangerous, rugged professions in the world. He was the toughest man I've ever met and he always told me to buy the best that you could afford. I have several Filson products that I've purchased, including the Mac wool Packer coat I purchased last year which is a beast, both in terms of warmth and cost. I still love their history and products (although not so much the imported items) but can no longer justify their cost. Its a shame.

I can remember recieving my first filson catalog in the mail. They used to state they didnt make clothes for looks or style; they made clothes for survival and to help keep you alive in the worst possible situations. I used to buy filson because they were field proven in the harshest climates on earth, build to the highest standards available, and worked so well they didnt need to change anything in over 100 years. My how times have changed........

You are absolutely correct. I have a 380 dollar tin cruiser from Wilson. My jacket from Duluth Trading smokes it in every respect and only cost me 69.95
