On this Carlos Alomar interview, meeting David Bowie, and why he left Bowie… growing up with a father who was a Pentecostal minister and the wisdom & openness Carlos gleaned from this relationship… working with Chuck Berry, Iggy Pop (and his incredible power), Mick Jagger, Gloria Gaynor and others… thing he’s proudest of, why you should never “Disturb the groove,” thinking like 3 guitar players, not one… golf, Greece, puppets, smiling, and why, “If you can’t explain it, you can’t defend it!” One of the smartest performers and most naturally happy people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, this is a MUST listen!

King, Joe Simon, Roy Ayers, The Main Ingredient (“Everybody Plays The Fool), Iggy Pop (co-writes), Cyndi Lauper, Carly Simon, Mick Jagger (co-writes), Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Simple Minds, Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Gloria Gaynor, Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars (Uptown Funk), Graham Parker, Debbie Gibson, Jellybean, Dr. Dre, Tom Jones, Prefab Sprout, The Pretenders and many others. He’s played on 32 Gold and Platinum records over the years & done soundtrack work for movies and TV, including movies like Rush, Pretty Woman, Pretty In Pink, Usual Suspects. When I was 16 I saw Bowie at the civic Arena Pittsburg in 78 and was greeted at the gate by Dennis Davis Carlos Alomar and Simon House.during the intermission Carlos and most of the band stepped off the stage and mingled with the crowd. I wish I wasn't so shy back then...this man has always been a beacon of light and goodness is radiating from him.

My first experience with Alomar was when i watched Bowie and his band at the German "Musikladen" performing "Stay". There was this great guy Adrian Belew stealing the show that made my musical heart sit up and jump with joy. So much fun. And later in the song, it began to dawn on me that my joy was really coming from the great "groove" that was the basis. I started looking at Mssrs Davis, Murray and Alomar. They were more in the back. But really carrying the event! It taught me to look beyond the obvious in music. I began to explore David Bowie's albums. And slowly began to realise how Carlos Alomar was the genius in the back. And now i see the interview. What a giant!

I got a phone call from Carlos around 1989, asking me to go on tour for 6 weeks in Australia with Debbie Gibson as her opening act's guitar player-Tiffany, lol. At the time, I was a bar-band guitar player in South Mississippi. I asked him why he was calling me, I was nobody-he told me I was highly recommended. Never found out by who. That's when I found out that opening acts aren't miked, you have to go straight off the stage, and all I had was a Carvin X-Amp combo, which I could never get past 2 on the master volume because it was so freaking LOUD-I told him it would peel the paint off of cars, but he said it wouldn't push enough air, and there was no budget for a rental. So he passed on me, because of that-but it was still a great experience to find out that people had noticed me on that level. Nice guy, but all business. He's a major player in the industry-kind of like Quincy Jones, or Nile Rodgers. At that time, I just knew he was David Bowie's guitar player.

One of the most fascinating music interviews that I have seen. This man has his own brand of depth. I am a Bowie fan and I listen for what all the different people brought to Bowie's sound. Bowie did not just employ people, he USED them for the benefit of the music progress. It's great to learn so much about the personality of a man who was so influential to David Bowie's sound during an era of his career. Thank you for this video.

For the longest time I thought the genius behind the Fame guitar riff was Stevie Ray Vaughan, probably because SRV was involved with Bowie during "Let's Dance" era. But sudden revelation like this are priceless and mind blowing. Bowie obviously hit the jackpot when meeting Carlos. I was too young when the phenomenal Diamond Dogs tour landed in Philly. Thanks to the double LP "David Live at the Tower Philadelphia" I instantly became a Bowie life time fan. He chose the best of the best, gotta love that! Awesome interview.. thanks!

One of THE most entertaining, informative, instructive, and illuminating music interviews I have ever heard. Carlos is soooo wonder full, humble, funny, inspiring and still, after so many years in the business, is still filled with wonder and appreciation about music and the great people involved within it. Thank you, it was such a pleasure to listen to it. I heard an interview with Ray Parker (Ghostbusters) that had a similar quality. That is, he was playing in bands since he was 14, and was earning more money than both his parents combined by the time he was 15. If you haven't already interviewed him, he would be another that brings that quality of music awareness and appreciation to the public.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitarI would love for you to listen to a song by David Bowie's daughter using the name Athina Bowie . Her channel has the same name and I'm hoping you could contact Carlos and just ask him if he's ever heard it before ? The title of the vid : David Bowie . Magic moments . Magic memories . All by Lexi . It definitely is some kind of a legit home movie made in Bowie's home , no doubt . I love this song so much but couldn't find any info about it and I'm hoping somebody who worked with her dad will encourage her because the song should have been a pretty big alternative music hit ... it's very retro it reminds me of some of the music from the 80s and early 90s . It's a very chill song ; earthy , warm and breezy . That's supposed to be Lexi singing on it . Could you please pass it on and help bring more attention to her song ? @@EveryoneLovesGuitarI also did not expect Carlos to be talking about that Gizmo Hitler had that could make people sick from the sound waves . Give me the impression he's probably in the other interesting things and I could picture him watching that show that used to come on years ago with Action Bronson and his friends getting all smoked up and eating food while watching Ancient Aliens haha . 😂

In the 80s he produced a record called "Doble Vida" from the Argentine band Soda Stereo, and it was a revolution conceptually speaking in the pop musical panorama in the country (and maybe in every Latin American country indeed). The man is a genius.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar There was a really funny anecdote from Soda Stereo´s bassist. When they were in the USA for the recording, Carlos Alomar composed and produced the song that Mick Jagger made famous "She is the Boss" (I don´t know if he produced the LP too) - apparently Carlos´wife was a robust woman hence the song´s name -. Well, the bassist asked Mr. Alomar why did not sing himself the song for a solo album, and he replied "When I sing it, I cannot sell it for more than 1.000 dollars, and when I sell it to Mick, I become millions!"

As a musician I agree with everything he say...I remember this highschool art teacher who told me while painting "Don't over patchke" Some kind of slang. BUt later when I was improvising with my first band I heard her voice in my head...Thelling me not to fill every hole...Now as a producer I hear her voice in my head regularly...JUst softly reminding me that the holes are also a part of the music and often less is more! So I was so happy to hear him say this
