Carlsbad Caverns National Park

For me a "Blast from the past". Brought back memories from long ago. Summer of 1960, a 16 year old just back from the Boy Scout Jubilee Jamboree, family (Mom, Dad, me, 3-year younger sister) took a vacation from Dallas to El Paso and stop at Carlsbad on way home. In the (then nearly new) 1960 VW bug - all 36 horsepower of it. Mom told Dad (after we got home) "No more long trips until we have a bigger car with air conditioning". Carlsbad Caverns was wonderful. Including the evening bat flight. Now - well, 63 years later, Mom and Dad have both passed away, I am sufficiently mobility impaired (need walker to get around) to feel the Caverns (except Big Room via elevator) are not accessible, and sister could probably do it the old way, but thanks for reviving the memories of that trip.

Great show. My wife and I visited the caverns last summer. Like Abby, my wife loves caves and bats. We had a great time exploring the "underworld" . A tip for active duty military and veterans, there is a free, lifetime Military National Parks Pass to gain access to more that 2000 federal recreation sites including national parks. The cost savings can really add up.

Carlsbad Caverns is my favorite place to visit, been there 4 times. Although I have yet to visit the Grand Canyon. But actually I just wanted to say how nicely presentabe you two are, and that I truly enjoy 'travelling' along with your exploits. Thank you.

I commented on your last video that I grew up near the Caverns and have been there many times. I have also seen the bat flight, definitely worth seeing. It is like nothing you have ever seen, unbelievable. I enjoyed watching this video, brought back great memories. I have been to Sitting Bull Falls too...

It's a little different out there than Pensacola, isn't it? I grew up in Houston--more like the Florida panhandle. This part of the country, across the Colorado Plateau from far-west Texas to Utah, has always been the antidote for me--the cure for too much city, too much humidity, too many people, and too much flat land.

I grew up in NM and CO so we took a lot of this for granted. We just thought everyone had this kinda thing in their backyard. But it is quite awe inspiring no matter what. P.S. I know your eagle-eyed viewers may catch the radiation tri-foil and wonder about it. We used to get 'flat-landers' asking if that was because of the atomic bomb testing nearby. We would explain that any cave or mine in granite, shale or limestone will have radon. The radiation is naturally occurring. Pennsylvania and South Dakota get a lot of Radon from minerals.

The first couple of times that I went it was ranger guided about 1955 and 1965 when I went back inn the 70's it was self guided always walked down and took the elevator up the last time I went was 2019 and took the elevator both ways.

That was very cool Adam. This brings back memories when I was 15 years old in Windhoek, Namibia (South West Africa). My brothers and I went on an exploring trip into the desert wilderness from boarding school one weekend. We walked for many kilometers and came across a rocky cliff face. My older brother noticed a small beehive about 3/4 of the way up. He decided to climb up about 40 feet, which was very dangerous but we didn't think of the consequences. He made it and with a stick broke off some honeycomb, dropping it down to us before climbing back down. Long story short, we made our way around to the top where there were step-down rock sections leading to the cliff and we came across a really small cave entrance. The entrance was no bigger than a 45 gallon drum. we got on our bellies and crawled in about 20 feet to its narrowest spot. There we found an assortment of really old bones, we had no idea what animals they were from, but it was really cool. I remember a small jaw of sorts which still had the teeth. We only stayed inside for a few minutes and crawled back out. We didn't take anything, not to mention I was getting really sweaty and claustrophobic. I also remember the incredibly fine powdery dust while crawling inside. Glad you guys had fun Abby, really looks amazing in there. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Blessings.👍🙏

Glad you had such a great time. We were there just 3 weeks ago. Had to fight 60-65 mph winds up to the Visitor Center but it was worth it. The trek down the natural entrance is quite a big deal, we could not walk right for a couple days afterwards but it was such fun!

Seeing one isn’t seeing them all. Every cavern is unique and different. We enjoy visiting all of the different parks we can. Getting older and being unable to experience places is exactly why we say to folks do it while you can because one day you won’t be able to.

@@AbomAdventures Yes indeed. We have always went on vacations every year have seen many caverns, etc. Sadly my parents never do and my dad died suddenly with heart attack in December, had never even been to Colorado. Sad some don't ever try to enjoy themselves like you do.

Hope you get a chance to see Sonora Caverns if you take I-10 back. Not as large as Carlsbad but it's attractive. Cascade Caverns in Boerne is another small cave to explore as well (ask for Pocket - she's a great guide!).

In 2019 the national parks service found above-average levels of radon in Carlsbad and enacted a plan to mitigate exposure. It’s perfectly safe, but they are being transparent. You can find multiple reports on their website for details.
