Carlsen defeats Ivanchuk’s Grünfeld effortlessly

This analysis features the chess game between 16-year-old Magnus Carlsen and Vasyl Ivanchuk from the 2007 Linares tournament. The opening is a Grünfeld Defense, Exchange with Carlsen deploying his knight to e2. Ivanchuk justifies Rc1 by exchanging c-pawns, thus giving Carlsen an ever so slight plus. Carlsen’s h-pawn advance produced multiple attacking ideas, and ultimately provoked exploitable weaknesses on Ivanchuk’s kingside.

Not just grandmasters, at this point Ivanchuk was still among the best 10-20 players in the world, and only 4 years before he was the second highest rated player in the world.

While he was never exactly world champion level, when you consider how long this Ukrainian grandmaster was a top 20 player (more than 25 years), you realize why he is considered as one of the greatest names in chess history.

Glad you were commentating Jerry, otherwise it looked to a spectator-level player like me 😀, to be a somewhat drab game. To me, Black looked negligent, from move 8, by not playing…PB5: It immediately inhibits White’s Light Bishop, driving him back to the 2nd or home rank; the Knight protects Black’s advanced QBP - the Knight himself being inoculated against attacks by pawns: It’s a crappy post in and of itself, but he could leave once the advanced Pawn’s protection is taken over with 9…PQN4. (This also, not incidentally, safeguards the now hanging Knight against any trick involving QR4ch, since White has no time for it in retreating his Light Bishop.) Anyhow, your commentary did give me a little more appreciation for a positional, Indian game. Thanks Jerry.

at 16:37 it feels like bishop g7 taking f6 would had been a better move for black. if he takes the bishop back he'll be disconnecting his passed pawns. if he takes the knight on c6 big whoop, bishop d8 protects the queen.
