It is called «Russian variation» because it was introduced by strong russian grandmaster Ragozin and then it was played by many other strong russian grandmasters and world champions(you may have heard of him due to «Ragozin Defence» in the Queen’s Gambit Declined).

I've loved the Gruenfeld since I first saw it, in a book, played by Fischer. I've won a few really nice games on the black side including a couple of destructive attacks but have also been crushed by the white center. It's not for everyone but it has solid pawn structure, active piece play and plenty of tactical opportunities down the long diagonal.

All I have about it's name "Russian Variation" is from Starting Out The Grünfeld (2004) by Jacob Aagaard """ It was the main choice of such players as Smyslov and Botvinnink in the middle of the last century, and more recently it has been played many times by Karpov, Piket and Bareev, and occasionally also by Kasparov, Anand and Topalov. Antonio, your assumption is correct: The Classical or Russian Variation: So named because starting in the 1930's, a succession of Russian Champions used this line, including Botvinnik, Smyslov, and Bronstein. This is the second most popular variation to the Exchange.
@Bromscus3 жыл бұрын
The Russian variation is by Peter Svidler. A little-known tip to avoid all the theory: The move 6... Be6 is a relatively new move, played by the world's leading Grunfeld Defense expert Peter Svidler against Sergey Volkov in 2017.

Such that the top bar is black with v small white captured pieces showing and the bottom bar is white with v small white captured pieces showing? Or even ditch the info corner and display captured material under each player's name - in gray scale. Perhaps in future a clock display, showing time of each move. Sorry about that!
