I found Knight E5 in like ten seconds. Magnus found it in two seconds. Magnus rating is 2858, so divided by five, mine would be 571, which is about right.

I watched the whole match back in 2022, and this was my favorite game. All the tactical complications in the center. b5!! by Hikaru, and Magnus' clutch conversion under time pressure was awe inspiring! Loved the analysis!

"GM" is an outgrown title for Magnus and Nakamura. They are somewhere between a top chess computer and a GM. FIDE needs to come up with a new chess rank just for players of that level.

Magnus made the right move at 7:05. If he had played e6 (as suggested) black has Bxf2+. White has to move the king and then black takes white's queen. Thanks to black's previous move (h6) white is now vunerable to that attack. Kf1 was the right move, e6 would have cost Magnus the game.

@@mrdraw2087 Now that I'm home, I've spent a bit of time analyzing the position with the help of Stockfish. Bxf2+ after e6 just doesn't seem to end well for black. Either white queens or black gives up the queen to prevent it (or black gets checkmated.) The best line I could find for black from Bxf2+ ends with white up a bishop (but down a pawn)

If played e6, you can win back a queen to as you threaten to promote so black gotta take with the queen giving back the queen after bishop takes on pawn. It’s a complicated position but the commentator just mentioned kf8 as some kind of Magnus move. I am not sure if he knows how to play chess 😂

I'm very confused. At 6:44 in the video, shouldn't black just check with the black bishop (moving it to f2), exposing the queen? The check must be responded to, so after the white king takes the black bishop, the black rook can take the white queen on b5. Am I missing something? It seems to me that at this point the game was pretty much won for black? Edit: oh wait -- after the black rook takes the white queen the white rook would just go to to c8, checkmate. I guess I'm not a chess pro :-)

Actually the opening transposed to a QGD with Bf4 tabiya. 11.Bd3!? is a deviation from established theory, and the computer scorns several of the moves played- e.g. after 17...Qh5 it suggests the move 18.Rde1 (prophylaxis against ...Bg4) and claims a crushing advantage for white. But this (I guess) isn't so relevant at a speed chess game.
