I make a sim and get them to their life I have deemed suitable for them and then I get bored instantly and have to redo it all. The game has very little in the way of normal life events. Imagine having shops to go and buy outfits because CAS doesn’t have them all unlocked without a mod/cheat. It would be nice to wear clothes of great expense because you earned it or were born into wealth (or cheated). Being able to buy jewellery as a gift for someone would be nice. Having more argument options like “argue about money” would be nice. The game still feels like the backbones even with all the EPs, GPs, SPs and those kits.

Omg yes! Toddlers was just bugging so bad for me. An adult could be holding a toddler and be on the second floor, and I would direct that adult to drop the toddler in a high chair that was downstairs, and the adult would just put the toddler down on the floor and walk down by itself while the toddler had to crawl/walk down by itself as well... it was so time consuming 🙄

I'm doing a 100 baby challenge right now and it's so horrible. I put the food on the floor for them to eat but sometimes they just hold the food on their hands for multiple hours straight. The only way to fix this is to make new food for them to eat.

I missed the vendors in the sims 2 for pets. You could just have your sim walk in the park and buy a fun treat for your pet and get a fun animation about it with satisfying hearts showing your pet loved it. Now your pet just eats it like it’s just another food. It’s a shell of what it was.

My breaking point in the sims 4 was when I realized my sim was the only person making progress with his life. No other sim advanced their careers, got in relationships or experienced any kind of setbacks. They’ll still wear they same clothes as they get older! Everything was static, nothing was happening outside of my sim’s life.

Same! There was actually a point where I went,” where are all the other Sims?” Guess what... THEY DIED. None of them had kids, so I lost all neighbors in every area. I even had that “move people into empty lots” thing on, but they move in too slow, so they die too fast. You cannot adjust that time last time I played. So I manually added people in, but it was getting too messy trying to maintain with all the loading screens. I kept hopping back and fourth, giving everyone an absurd amount of kids to hopefully balance out the lack of neighbors, and they didn’t have family trees if I moved in a kid. I felt like it was more of a job than a game.

I tried playing with long lifespans/age-up when it felt right so the kids could get all skills etc. 100%, and I ended up making the parents have way too many babies and then adding a mod to let some of the kids die. It felt really dramatic, but I realized that adding that drama was the only thing holding my interest in the family for long enough to complete the goals I had set. Even when I was dedicated to playing thoroughly for goals, I was so bored by the general gameplay that I made extra kids just to kill them off later. When I finally stopped doing that, trying to get more immersed in skills/goals, it fell into a flat, boring grind.

In the sims 2, they had to be a family first. I stopped the aging. What happened to the babies? My Sims 2 Sims are smarter than my Sims 4 Sims. When I want my Sims to talk, in S2 they will meet directly and talk, in S4 one runs past the other one to where that Sim just stood when I gave them the task, they have to walk back there, then wander and turn around each other a few times before they can talk, if the task wasn't lost in the meantime.

Oh my gosh, do you remember Sims 3 World Adventures?! I spent so much time in SimEgypt that I felt guilty that I was neglecting the REST of the game. I worked SO I could go on vacation, and went as often as my Sim could afford to so I could collect all the things, learn the recipes, acquire the skills, and discover the mysteries. And I got a kick out of inviting the "foreign" Sims to come visit me. THAT'S how expansions should be.

Stardew Valley might be like somewhat life sim, but quests still exist so I wouldn't consider that the same. It's a shame there's literally no other life sim than the Sims, for any players. I'd love another Sims like game but realistic, and would want people to have nonrealistic versions to themselves too :/

let's also talk about the difference between the amount of content in one pack in the sims 3 and the sims 4. in the sims 3 late night we got apartments, celebrities, the acting career, hot tubs, clubs and vampires. getting it all took the sims 4 3 expansion packs, 1 game pack and 1 stuff pack. yes, there were also other things in those packs, but let's be honest, it's not much.

Honestly, I got so fed up I played different games and now even reinstalled the sims 2, which is better btw. I really enjoy building but when it comes to playing "life"... the sims 4 characters are just lifeless, can't take care of themselves in the slightest and just want to watch tv or play video games *yawn*. Yes! Love the graphics of TS4, and it’s my favorite of the series to build in (though building still has some bugs that have been present since launch), but it’s been years since I’ve actually played with the actual sims themselves in TS4, which is the entire primary point of the game. It’s a life simulator for goodness sake. Out of all the features in The Sims, the life simulation should be the feature that runs the smoothest and offers the most, but that’s the complete opposite when it comes to TS4. In my opinion, TS2 will always be the best game in the series, by FAR. The gameplay for TS2 was phenomenal and always kept me engaged in actually playing with life for hours and having a household run relatively smoothly, with the expansion packs you paid for actually giving you well rounded, completed and fully functioning content with very sparse minor hiccups here and there. TS2 was the last truly exceptional sims game, it all went downhill from there, and I don’t have much hope it will ever return to its glory days if the current higher ups at EA are still calling the shots. If they made an exact copy of TS2 with better graphics and TS4 style building, I wouldn’t hesitate to immediately hand them my money.

I was 20 when the first Sims game was released. My brother and I spent all day, every day on that game and it was never boring. Same with Sims 2 and 3. They're all fantastic. Sims 4 has fallen flat from the very beginning. I haven't played it over a year and even when I did, it couldn't keep my attention for very long. It's lacking in so many areas. EA will no longer be receiving my money. The game is dead for me. I'm now playing other games like Red Dead 2 online and story, Witcher 3, My Time At Portia and Among Us.

Lindsey & she said they threw any & everything at the sims 3 & it affected the game & systems negatively. I was excited about University cause it was something to actually work for but the game was so buggy and didn't explain anything so I ended up taking too many courses to handle and the grad timing bugged out so I didn't graduate after the stress of cramming in all those courses. It was so bad. And they made it seem so fun but it wasn't at all. I love the game but it really does have the "hollow shell" vibe that is created by a corporation. My partner is an ex-software engineer and he said his friends avoided working at EA because they were such an evil company that, like many other game companies, push their workers into the ground with extreme deadlines and little care for the end product. As long as it pleases the stock holders that's all that matters.

I ended up having to cheat to get through the university section, especially because I had the eco lifestyle expansion active, so as soon as my sim got there, the neighborhood voted to cut water usage. There was no dining hall (which, even if expensive, most colleges have a place to eat) and the little shop that sold some food (which closed early!) never sold food that was filling. There wasn't even a shared oven in the dorm, and randos would walk into your room to use your microwave. By the time the semester was over, all the Sims in the dorm were smelly and starving, and the dorm itself was a mess with trash everywhere. College isnt always the best time, but the Sims version was so pointlessly hard for so little reward.

The biggest issue for me when it comes to gameplay, is the lack of incompatible traits. Everyone can get along, no matter what. In the past, you couldn’t be friends with some sims no matter how hard you tried, because you were simply incompatible. It feels more like real life.

I like being able to control who my sims get along with, and having total decision over where to story goes.You can make them hate each other if you want drama. They'll also develop animosities with other sims "naturally" that you can either fix or make worse depending. I've returned to The Sims 3 recently, after uninstalling The Sims 4 for good. I only use NRAAS for technological reasons (a mod which makes the game run better on modern machines) and no additional mods, yet I can sink hours into the game. Just this weekend, I played with one sim for hours, not only to explore tombs with World Adventures, but also just having her at home, writing trashy novels for money and doing everyday stuff that would be boring in The Sims 4. Sims in The Sims 3 (and The Sims 2, I loved that one, too) have a personality. They do stuff on their own and what they do makes sense in combination with their skills and traits (such as my sim boosting her handiness skill while working on the vintage car I bought for her). With NRAAS in the background, cleaning up the technolgical side and minimizing lags and loading times, the game is great to play.

I've been playing Sim™ games since the '90s, and started playing TS1 a few months after the base game was released. But thanks to having a really crappy computer for most of the last several years, I didn't start playing TS4 until shortly before Island Living came out. So my perspective for the longest time was, "I mean, I know it's not as good as previous versions of the game, but it's not _that_ bad." It's always a bit shocking to see videos like this and be reminded of just how bad it really was on release!

What ticks me off is one of them is my own uncle who was also a veteran of playing sims. Dunno why he kept praising TS4 for being realistic near to real life and totally trashing TS3. I've tried to explain but no avail, he kept pushing me to play those. At least for now my ol' laptop was too fragile to be played with TS4, I have a reason to uninstall. But I'm still secretly play TS3 (only base game so it won't ruin my laptop). Also it's sad that I cannot play TS2 anymore. Windows 10 update is really sucks that slowly they made TS2 cannot be installed in latter updates. I sort of wish EA will renewing the system inside TS2 instead releasing those packs. But yeah, I knew it's just an empty dream...

Yes!! There is no reason why those two options should have been in university! The fact that university is still a rabbit hole just feels lackluster for all the work your sim put in to graduate. Also, since parenthood is as close as to what we have for a generations pack, prom and other after-school activities should have been involved in that pack.

I had 3 expansions (I played 4 in total but had to give World Adventures back because it crashed my entire computer) for TS3 and before that played the base game for years without ever getting bored, and the packs weren't even Seasons or the city pack! There was always so much to do, making up stories would come naturally. Sometimes I just sent my Sim to work and looked about the world for the wild horses, or just played with puppies. Now I spend over an hour in CAS coming up with outfits, and several more on building a house, and then even 5 minutes' worth of gameplay is utterly boring. Every aspect of the game is only interesting the first time I play, I've ever played with mermaids again, never went to uni again, never visited Selvadorada a second time... It's so frustrating, I'd play TS3 again if I had a gaming computer and not a laptop that's already struggling.

I have a friend who used to work for EA Canada way back in the day. (Early 2000s.) While he never worked on any Sims titles, the horror stories he's told me are enough to convince me that the root of the problem is with the higher-ups. Sure, the devs have probably made some missteps here and there - they're only human after all - but I really feel for them, and really get the feeling that they care about the game and are doing the best they can while working under the thumb of a company that only really cares about the almighty dollar. Damn, I miss the Will Wright era!

No doubt that’s the biggest problem here. I can’t imagine that the devs have made a lot of these decisions on their own. Sometimes I think their excitement when they release new packs/expansions is put on because they must know deep down that they are not making people happy and that must suck. I think it’s totally the higher ups at EA, if this was just Maxis I think we’d would have seen a totally different game.

That's the root issue, for sure. Things are always better when they are products of passion and not of corporate greed. It's not even the competition factor in my opinion, Sims 2 and 3 didn't have competition either and were great. It's the company, and the big guys profiting off of it.

I agree that the higher ups are the problem but the sims team is too IMO. Simguru Lindsey said herself that she thought up and pushed production of the Star Wars pack because she thought it would be fun, but it took them 6 years to add better skin tones🙄 and one of the other gurus said that they didn’t even play the previous games and/or didn’t like them. I just feel like everyone all around is just lazy and just doesn’t want to make a better game and tbh if some of the people from the S4 team is moving to S5 then I don’t expect that game to be any better🤷🏾‍♀️.

As an irl developer, i know there's blame all around. Whether it's the business pushing things that they require but are not the best ideas or the devs not pushing back on things or not taking the time to develop the best quality, qa missing things while testing, or just that the team is being pushed so much to finish business requirements that they aren't getting to their tech debt backlog. From my experience, having the business back off for a time so tech debt can be addressed is very important. But also so is getting out of the rut that is created when things go wrong for whatever reason and it forces work to be shabby to be done in time. If i remember right, sims4 has a set release schedule for their dlc. So unless they skip a dlc to work on things like tech debt, it's most likely that things will continue to be poor in quality because they're behind in the development cycle. Who knows, maybe the new game will adopt a new type of development cycle from the last. Maybe they're trying to finish every task within a set time rather than working on a task until it is completed. So when i blame the game being bad quality, i blame it on everyone.

For me, mods add actual events, randomness and personality to my games. I've also been playing TS4 since it came out after years of playing TS2 and TS3. TS4 is still boring whether it's the base game or with the EA released packs. Mods are necessary. Just my opinion though.

@Normal Cup I played the sims 4 first and liked it, I thought it was cool. I was playing sims free play before, so compared to that it was a disaster. But then the packs started adding up and costing so much. I think I spent like $150 on the game, I got a lot of packs. Still with all those packs I was still bored. Then I got a good deal for the sims 3 on eBay, the base game + dlcs so I thought, why not. The gameplay is so much more alive and enjoyable. The only downside is the graphics aren’t so good and it’s different and harder to navigate. Also it recommends not to use more than a few at once. They should have focused on making a remastered sims 2 or 3, because the sims 4 sucks. I’d rather get a refund for the sims 4.

That's not fair. I think a lot of TS4 problems stems from the online part. Because of how everything probably evoled around it, the game has suffered a lot since and it's not an easily fixable thing. Also, TS3 was not that great at the time but people tend to look back with rose colored glasses. So with that in mind, I'm still going to be cautious about TS5. Huge corperations out to make a profit is still very much a problem. Support indie devs (Paralives) to compete with the big guys and I'm sure the market will become greater.

One thing that bugs me about sims4 is the lack of being able to just walk around the town.. with sims 3 you can go to the park and there are townies there or sitting outside the grocery store, it had a sense of community I guess and you could send you sim out jogging and they could do so without a loading screen.. I used to play sims3 for hours and hours now sometimes I log into sims 4 and can't even stay more than a few minutes because I am bored and log out.

I think there is a huge disconnect between the developers and the EA people who basically see The Sims as the most reliable flagship title in the company. To expand on this, I think, in large part, the devs are and do try their best, however, I think they are greatly limited by what their corporate bosses want them to do. I think the little things that upset people--like the gnome--are more like the developers saying "we're still paying attention. we haven't abandoned the game." Do I think that the game will ever feel finished? I don't know. But it doesn't feel it's in early release anymore. And that's my big fear with 5. A premature game, with 7 years of early realisiness. (is that a word?)

Yes, limited in a sense of "must bring in x amount of revenue vs cost" I definitely believe this. Many of TS3 people are still working on TS4. The climate for them changed. Those people made a game many people loved and you can still see their touch at times. It's just never fleshed out.

As an ex-EA employee, all I can say is they value Sims a lot, just as much as Fifa, but unlike Fifa, which is very closely monitored, Sims is left up to Maxis, because Sims 1-3 were such successes. EA was very unsatisfied. What I'm saying is I think Maxis doesn't really want to make Sims like it used to be, but they wanna keep the IP. But the deadlines were ofc EA's decision. I'm not necessarily defending my ex-company. (Especially since I was disappointed with Sims 4 as well)

There was a guy from Maxis that did a small ama on reddit and said the contrary. Maxis was thriving until will wright left and EA took over. EA apparently asked to cut massive corners so they could spend less on production and cancelled all creative meetings so they could meet newer, closer deadlines. I mean everyone has different POVs in this story, but its hard to deny that Maxis always done good games before EA but EA is known for making cashgrab games that lack substance

My big prediction for The Sims 5 will be that they find a way to implement some kind of loot box system into the online service. They might try to sell "rare" in-game objects, hairstyles, clothes, etc in random packs. These "rares" will be things like object recolors, hot tubs, bunk beds, swingsets. Mark my words.

I wasn't too horrified by the loss of create a style, but I had expected more swatches to make it workable. It just felt very hollow. Those moods and behaviours made it look like my Sims had some sort of severe psychological problem as they cycled so fast. It really confused me that teens are very difficult to visually distinguish from adults, and I was so, so, so disappointed that they went back on the open world.

Seriously though, it's so annoying that kids go from 10 to 18 and teens are just slightly skinnier adults. That's not what teenagers look like! They need to add preteens to make that jump less jarring (not in a pack though :p)

Sims 2 had an actual map, not just a freaking picture of one. You could move around this map and reach all the locations because it was a MAP. Best I can use describe the Sims 4 neighbourhood screen is a treasure map. Or an array. That's the difference. Sims 2 is a list, Sims 4 is an array.

i miss sims 3 badly. one of my favorite pastimes as a kid was taking all the premade families out of sunset valley and putting my own in, while also being able to make my own houses and some public buildings (libraries / schools) it just. doesnt hit the same in 4. the neighborhoods are tiny (doesn't one only have 4 lots LMAO) n overall it just lacks substance that at least 3 had. I never played pc versions of the first two only gamecube or ps2 editions so i cant speak on them too much

You also forgot to mention that the neighborhood/world screens at launch were originally WHITE with blue outlines. They weren’t in full color. It was like that for about a year, if I remember correctly. It just added to the overall bleakness and hollowness of the game itself.

I recently decided to just reinstall sims 3 and 3 packs, it’s been so refreshing to just constantly have something to do and it feels like i’m still exploring new things. I don’t think i’ll ever go back to sims 4 anymore

This! I’ve been playing sims 3 for years and I’m still finding new things to do. I only bought three expansion packs to have fun (pets, supernatural and seasons), and even then, it would still be super fun without them. Sims 4 gets boring super quickly even with a bunch of *super expensive* expansion packs. It’s like my main problem with the game. Yes, the characters are fun to make, but I never end up wanting to play with them. I’m just... disappointed. I find myself loving an idea of what Sims 4 could be, and not what it is. Honestly, I *dislike* what it is.

I wish the game and company was better overall, but there's no denying that there are a lot of good additions to the sims 4, and it's awesome that it makes you happy! I'm not trans myself, so it doesn't mean as much as it could, but it makes me really happy too. SimCity players like myself were very lucky to get a spiritual successor in Cities: Skylines, even if the focus is slightly different. Sims players didn't even have a sign of something like that until very recently, and it'll undoubtedly get worse before it gets better, if it even does.

The problem is Sims 4 feels like window dressing. It’s empty, it’s hollow, it has no impact. It’s playable, it “functions” but at no risk taken. Like a child’s game, it hands everything to you. There is no challenge, there is no risk. Everything can be exactly how you want it to be. No unexpected misgivings. That’s the worst part, there’s no personality, no story, nothing. The game is literally begging you to imagine everything in order to make an inch of enjoyment outside of folks who like to build or create sims. Even the pets are like this. Personality just adds a few new animation. Not actual instances of character. That’s why I’m so bored and disinterested now. I cannot sit in my head literally directing every ounce of the story or character’s progression.

yeah the chance of my sims dying in Sims 2 and 3 was so much higher lmao I remember being so upset that my sims died of a random cause but I haven't saved yet. I didn't want to redo hours of gameplay and had to start anew. That was devastating but I liked it. In sims 4 so far my Sims's biggest tragedy was burning the food...

The only memorable bit of gameplay I've experienced in Sims 4 was when a child Sim went to a friend's house after school and one of the friend's parents accidentally set the kitchen of their apartment on fire. My child Sim couldn't put the fire out, I couldn't control the parents to have them do it, and the dad died. It was so shocking. It reminded me why I liked this game in the first place.

I agree, I loved the dreams from Sims 3 and the relationship stuff from Sims 2. I loved that I could take two sims that didn't know each other, move them in and just watch them interact to see what would happen between them. This doesn't happen anymore. You can't even get them to befriend each other unless you direct everything and that's so boring. I don't want everything to be directed by me. I love the RNG of AI doing weird things based on their wishes and motivations, which adds a feeling of each sim and playthrough being unique. When you are the sole writer of the story, there's no motivation to replay a similar situation because you already know the outcome since it's something you decide. There's no randomness factor that makes the same situation interesting because it could still result in a vastly different outcome. Also, I have a very good machine for TS4 but I hate how I have to load to even just leave my house. I got Sims on an SSD but the constant loading makes me not very inclined to do certain things I would do in any other game that was open world. I don't go to resorts, I don't really explore and so on, because it requires loading. It just doesn't lead to a seamless experience and I don't understand why they made it like this. The overall experience is worse even if it may be less choppy on low performance machines but seriously? Why design the game for low end systems at all? Sims is a huge game and requires many assets to load and function, and I think it's stupid to try to cater to the low end system crowd. It's unfair if you got a low end system, but that's just how it's always will be. You can't please everyone, if people can't afford a better system to play the game then so be it.

My favorite part of the Sims is genetics, if you put this sim with that sim, what will their kid look like? In Sims 2 and 3 you had to actually play through the game to make it happen, have them fall in love, get married, have kids, and get the kid to adulthood to see the final result. In sims 4 you just move the two sims into a house together and create a new sim with genetics in CAS and instantly see what you're going to get. It's more immediately satisfying, but in the long term there's no point in actually playing the game, I'll just experiment in CAS for a bit and be done. I also never understand when I watch a streamer play Sims and they're struggling with money and everyone in chat starts yelling "just use the motherlode cheat!" It's not just Maxis handing things to us too easily, it's also players wanting to cheat past every challenge and then wondering why the game is so boring.

"Don't be ungrateful" has always stuck in my craw, big time - especially when it comes to the devs and "sims gurus" being smarmy little liars. "Gratitude" is not how business works, and not how the market works either; if you keep promising a good product and shovelling out shoddy, half-baked nonsense, it's not "ungrateful" to call trash what it is: trash. Especially considering how they have the unmitigated gall to ask for full game prices for a few recycled animations and four chair objects... The pure condescension that the "gurus" have shown towards the community that pays for their wages has created this messy cycle of disappointment, where asking gameplay in your game packs, and at least *some* bang for your buck is seen as "ungrateful" because "they work hard!!!"... I work hard, too, and none of my clients will accept a subpar, half-assed, half-completed product from me - and they shouldn't have to! It's lead to this situation where the devs and the publisher take the audience interest as granted and trot out one horribly half-baked, buggy, shallow, overpriced entree after another, knowing full well that the players will lap it up regardless because that's what they're used to by now and because they're not going to get anything better from EA and the Sims Team anyway... so there's no need to put in effort to make anything but more shallow trash. The only cure is in stopping giving them any more of your hard-earned money. It's *insulting* that this is what they've done with this fantastic franchise that has so much potential: it's just dumbed-down, hollowed-out, soulless, pointless trash now.

How to fix the Sims 4: Just make the Sims 5, which could be a combo of Sims 2&3 gameplay, Sims 3 open world, and Sims 4 CAS and Build Mode, and bring back and upgrade all Sims 4 packs to be better in the Sims 5, and make them included in the base game instead of separate DLC. I swear, the Sims 4 is one of the only games where some DLC actually costs more than the game itself.

They literally made the engine and character creation, and sold every quest and item and feature one by one as expansions. Imagine if in Breath of the Wild you had to buy the fruit and vegetables expansion, then the cooking expansion, then the horses expansion, then the master sword expansion, then the side quest expansion, then the korok seed expansion, then the trial of combat expansion, then the shrines of wisdom, strength and courage expansion (each sold separetely). It seriously is insane.

I wouldn't even care if the expansions actually worked when they were released. If I by the trial by combat expansion, I better have some kickass duel options and there better be some great animations for it. They've been releasing everything as expansions and then the expansions have all basically just been I.O.U.'s (except I don't think EA actually has any plans of adequately fixing any of their numerous broken or half empty expansions)
