Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. Hey mate, it all depends on how you get your guitar set up. Same deal with any guitar you’d play. If you prefer a low action then set the guitar up with a low action:) good luck!

Everything you said is true. But I am one of those piezoelectric haters. I use knk mini transducer. Simple good sound. No battery. With the harsh piezoelectric, you need compression and more e.q., basically all the equipment is needed to smooth out the piezoelectric. That's alot to pack around, wires to short out, come unplugged and things to go wrong. I like the idea of being off grid. Are you dependent on all this or can you perform in a place when and where there is no power? I did all this 20 yrs ago. You accidentally bump a dial and spend 10 minutes looking for the problem. It's too much gear

None of the hype or ego so prevalent in the business. GREAT JOB young man! I'm not a true professional performer like yourself but my country rock band beat the road for 26 years playing 1 to 3 night weekend gigs in 3 states while I raised a family and worked as a telephone lineman. Then I spent 10 years in a bluegrass gospel group doing some recording as well. I learned so much in this band. I put together a sound system where we all, except bass, played acoustically and sang through three Audio Technica (AT4033) large diaphragm condenser mics. The experience was phenominal. Every nuance controlled simply by mic proximity and how you held your instrument in relation to the mic. Its an experience I hope you get to enjoy if you havn't already. True freedom! The tonewood and strings get to sing! I now perform mostly solo or in a duet in church and some secular gigs in a duet with my brother. I retired back in September and I'm excitedly gearing up and preparing to perform in a solo acoustic setting this year. While learning from others on youtube, your video popped up. So much of what you conveyed rang true with my own years of experience. In your short presentation you answered questions regarding problems I'd never found solutions to. THANK YOU SINCERELY! The old man has rambled enough. I wish you a very contented and joyous life and I truely hope that you achieve whatever your own definition of success in the music business is now and whatever it evolves to be as time goes on. BTW, your live streamed videos sound incredible and like I'm in the same room when I play them through my recently acquired Fishman Loudbox Performer! Keep up the great work! BRAVO!

Hey Mate, yes I send my acoustic guitar "Instrument input" out the Main LR, and I assign each track (1, 2, 3) output to go out the Sub LR. That way I have 2 x Stereo signals. and I just plug them into the DI's. if its a small setup I can just run them in mono instead of stereo. :)

@@VonnStrummer it could be a lot of things, but In my opinion it’s possibly the pickup system that would be the bulk of the sound. For reference I use a Maton guitar and have tried most other brands including Taylor and Martin, Gibson, larave, Breedlove etc… and I don’t get anywhere close to the sound I need. Not saying it’s the only fix but it’s the biggest difference between them

I’ve never had any real audio notice of tone suck though my rig, it may be a combination of getting the right gain structure for yours? Or checking out another m5. Haha! Yeah they are acrylic, if you look there are a surprising number of players with them. I don't need them to play and in fact if electric guitar was my main rig then I wouldn't have them. For the acoustic however, for the specific tone Im after, I do want them and thats up to me as if I didn't have them then Id have to EQ some top end into the mix to brighten up the tone when fingerpicking, which would become a nuisance when I strum with a pick in the loops. They aren't at all dirty (you can almost see through them in this video), THAT would be gross for sure. But the best part about it IS.... Im happy and you can go on being happy you don't have long nails. Happy Friday mate!

Phil Smyth hey mate, thanks for the comment. I occasionally use the delay in the unit as it syncs with the loop tempo and can be handy. But I specifically chose these separate stomps as the tones in a separate unit are much better and can be adjusted quick on the fly:)

Thanks, its a Maton EMD6. Maton only have 2 pickup systems the AP5 Pro and the AP5 Classic. Only difference is the AP5 classic has no additional microphone, Thats the model I have since I done use the mic. Hope that helps!

Hey mate😎 sorry for the vagueness here but it all depends on the sound you’re chasing. Distortion isn’t usually a good option for acoustic. Overdrive is really the only option if you want a crunch lead tone, and that’s not even designed for acoustic, so you need to find some work arounds. My advise, try it:)

Hi, can I ask? I have the smaller boss looper with 2 pedals, but the sound from it when it comes to live performances is not good. Shoud I buy some dibox or something to make it better? Claire hi, the sound won’t change from using the boss pedals. It either means your guitar doesn’t sound good or the speaker. The key is making sure the volume is set correctly. Plug your guitar directly into the mixer/speaker and note the volume. Then plug it though the looper and set the volume to sound the same as if the looper wasn’t there. A DI box will just balance the signal it won’t make it sound noticeably better

Yes it can me mono or stereo it won’t change the tone. Loop pedals can only ‘loop’ whatever sound they get so it sound like the guitar might be your issue. Electric or acoustic is fine

Hey Carl! Thanks for your advices. I have a problem with the Boss RC300. My microphone and guitar levels are too loud, and it "crashes" even if the level of my guitar (magnetic microphone) or the level of the input of the track is quite low (never more than 9 o clock). I don't use any pedal, maybe a I should? Did you have the same problem when beginning with this looper? Keep music, yours is really good to hear! :)

Hi Alexis, Thanks for the comment. The preamps in the RC300 are very hot, for my microphone I usually have it around 8 o'clock, and my guitar is around 10 o'clock. This however should not crash your RC300, it would just sound really bad if its too loud. Are you using the Boss Power Supply?

Indeed it doesn't sound good when I have to many overdubs. Yes I think (the cable that brings the energy to the pedal? If not, sorry, I come from Belgium so my English is not so good haha). According to you, using an acoustic preamp for my guitar and my microphone (such like the TC helicon voicelive3,..) would make the signal that comes into the looper better? Thanks a lot!! :)

Alexis Rosseels yes that’s correct the power energy cable. And no you don’t need a preamp for the guitar but if you do use one make sure the volume is not loud

Thank, this is an old pedal board for me now, I’d love you to check out my up to date one. But yes you could use electric or acoustic with it. I would advise some kind of Electric guitar preamp / amp sim. Especially if you’re running the same output tho.

Hey Carl, I’m loving your tutorial videos! I’ve been playing gigs with the RC300 for a while and am trying to learn more advanced ways to use it. I do have a question for you: where are you running your in-ears out of? For the past few years, I’ve literally just crossed my two big speakers so that I could hear myself playing and still have them pointed at the crowd. I haven't but on first glance it doesn't have a threshold dial to adjust the Low Pass filter for the octave, which I use a lot on the OC3. Im sure other than that its a great pedal tho!

@@carlwockner yea, it doesn’t actually use the “octave pedal” concept. It turns your 5-6 E and A string into legit bass strings. Has a wet signal output that you can plug into either a separate channel in your mixer, or you can do as I do and put it through an actual bass amp, meanwhile the dry signal with no effect goes through your pedal chain, so you have a legit split/separate guitar and bass channel! It’s a total game changer! You’ll never look back. Has other features too...

@@nicholas_himself Sorry mate, I guess its a force of habit being a full time musician and singing for a living. Using my vocal mic technique when talking. Especially on a dynamic mic with a tight cardioid pattern - if I even speak in my normal voice a few inches away the volume will significantly drop. Ill keep it in mind for the future tho - thanks for the feedback.

Roberto Armonio thanks mate! Every guitar will behave a little different electronically but I personally have the volume at full, bass flat, treble on 30% and mid range boosted slightly at around 1k.

@@carlwockner Carl, I got my Mini Maton with a AP5 Pro and been geeking out and tone chasing (forever on acoustic pretty much). It has got the mid-range freq. control and level knobs. I have it plugged in to my AER Domino 2A (Eq flat) + also trying all kinds of pedals that I have accumulated (AER Colourizer 2, Digitech Polara, EHM Mel9, Keeley 30ms double tracker, TC Mimiq, etc.) as well as what I picked up from your board. I have been trying to look for a good sound engineer locally that actually knows acoustic tone (and won't waste my time or worse yet, scam me). I will spend more time with the guitar as you suggested (before it reaches the board - Tascam Model 24). It has taken me literally the last 5 years now tone chasing the acoustic sound (w/o micing it live). I am an (older) lead vocalist (have a little river band song on KZbin on vocal tracks years ago) I play a bit of acoustic and keys, but tasked as the 'sound guy' for my trio. LOL, I can't even get past this acoustic tone. I have 2 other (Breedloves) with AnthemSLs. So, Carl if you're back in Vegas in the future and can spare a couple hours of your time to help me co-engineer this rig, I would forever be grateful if I could hire you for your expertise. It all depends on the mix and what you’re IEMs are designed for. The cca’s are a cheap IEM (doesn’t always mean bad tho) but I would certainly look at a couple other options or borrow some diffeeent ones to try

I can't believe how microphone like it sounds, even with the body percussion! Typically with a UST Ive played you cant hear the body, except maybe on a nanoflex pickup. I have an old Takamine with a great sounding UST but for looping I have to boost it for body percussion, even my Baggs needs a bit of a boost. Ty

Just a note that this is just an overview of my pedalboard - Just because I HAVE all these FX doesnt mean I use them all the time - if you ever happen to get to a live show of mine you'll see that over half the time I am running pure acoustic and vocal. Not to mention I perform all kinds of shows from intimate acoustic, to upbeat main stage, to dive bar covers to solo instrumental styles - this board covers every one of those shows. My point I guess is that just because I own a spaceship, doesnt mean I have to travel in space:) But I can if I want to!

@@carlosescalantepliego310 All good, Carlos. Btw ... I see that you like using pedals with your acoustic guitar? One pedal I started using recently with my acoustic guitar is the DigiTech Mosaic. This pedal can make your acoustic or electric guitar sound like a 12 string. It is amazing! I use it on 'Hotel California' by the Eagles, 'Maryjanes Last Dance' by Tom Petty, and 'Stairway to Heaven' by Zeppelin-- all with excellent results. Like most effects pedals, the trick is to not overuse the pedal. I used the Mosaic with my band yesterday when we played at a winery! Check it out and best to you.

haha - heres my single answer:) I chose those microphones from personal preference of tone and functionality. The switch on the looper mic helps me to toggle it on and off so there is no extra noise being looped and my main mic doesn't have a switch (it doesn't need one). the Main mic is running totally separate to my guitar and looper yes. my IEM's (ears) are connected to my studio rig - but for the purpose of live performance - yes ONLY recommend using a Mixer and PA system, connecting the guitar and main microphone channel/s separately into the mixer, and running your wedge/monitor/In ear Monitors from your mixer (not the guitar pedals as it doesn't show an accurate representation of what people hear, and there is no control). Definitely use a Mixer and PA to practice at home.

Hi Stephen. I use the Smokder pedal for rhythm and lead. Don’t get me wrong, it is not as heavy as an distortion pedal for an electric guitar but it sounds amazing on the acoustic. There is ZERO feedback because of the ‘pickup comp’ feature. The blend knob is a great addition too. I perform a wide variety of covers and this is working for all styles from rock to blues and even just to give some ‘guts’ to to some songs where I wouldn’t have used overdrive before. I definitely recommend trying one out. This pedal will never leave my acoustic pedalboard!! Happy playing....

Hi MusicMisfitShow. I use an Epiphone ej200 (the newer model that only has an under saddle pickup) and it works just fine. I go into an LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI pedal, into the Smolder and then into the front of my Marshall AS50 amp. I have not tried it into a PA system but it sounds great through the amp.

Hi Carl! Thanks for the video, it's amazing! I've been into live looping for a long time and I just upgraded from my JamMan solo XT to Boss RC 50 which is basically older brother of RC 300. But there's one thing I can't figure out. When I was using the JamMan I could plug guitar into input A and mic into input B (with a special adaptor) and the output A would be guitar plus looped guitar and output B would be mic plus looped mic. That way I could eq the channels separately in the mix that I have in the chain after the looper. But using the RC 50 I couldn't figure out how to make let's say: main output L looped guitar, main output R looped mic (that I have connected to the dedicated mic XLR input), sub output L guitar thru, sub output R mic thru. Do you think there is a way to accomplish that? Or would you describe briefly your input and output settings? That would be really helpful to me! Thank you so much! Keep up such amazing work! Thanks mate - honestly the overdrive is a constant change for desired tone. Right now Im using a Wampler Tumnus with a parametric EQ patched in prior to it. and the EQ is only engaged specifically when I turn on the overdrive. The key to the best overdrive has equal parts to do with the guitar pickup and also the overdrive pedal.

@@aliceaubrey471 it depends how you use the compressor. If you always have it on then use at the start, otherwise either the compressor or OD are fine at the start. I would suggest only using the compressor as a volume boost. Most acoustics don’t need compression from a pedal. Unless that’s a specific tone you’re after

Josh Robson thanks Josh. What problems are you running into? I suggest always to DI every guitar send you have before it gets to the mixer/recording interface. My rig has 2x stereo outs from my looper so I I run 4x di’s or 2 stereo DI’s. For the purpose of this video I just ran them mono so I only needed 2 DI’s.

Well I have a few different problems I run into and a lot of times whenever I ask anyone at a shop or anyting they don't fully know what I'm talkin about or really how to fix it and kind of look at me like im crazy. So the first problem I really started to have was with my K&K pickups and running it through in LR Baggs di because apparently K&K pickups do not mesh well with LR Baggs at all and if you want them too you have to solder on a ohm resistor to the end pin and I think I may have that fixed but I'm finding that It still has almost like cut in/out signal from my strumming and I do a lot of 16th type of rhythm strumming and a lot of it doesn't pick up at times. Now this is one I had without the Looper but my setup right now is guitar-pedals-mix 8 mixer-Rc 300-pa system and I run my mic, synthesizer and banjo through the mixer. Now what I find is that while I play any of those instruments without looping it all sounds clean but as soon is i try to Loop that's when I run into problems my guitar or banjo sound muddy or really soft and just quite off. Amy help would be much appreciated.

Hey mate, so the issue is mostly the fact that you have a mixer BEFORE the looper. Meaning you are taking a line level signal (of your guitar) and converting to a mix level signal (from the output of your mixer) and plugging it into he RC-300 which is designed to have a line level input not a mix level input. Do you loop the synth and banjo? my advise would be to use the 3 inputs of your RC-300 for the instruments, and if you dont use a looper mic, then its perfect - guitar will be in instrument, synth would be in the AUX input, and the banjo can go through your DI and into the Mic input of your looper. THEN after your looper plug into the Mixer and then finally into the PA system as its designed to run. Alternatively you could use just get a foot switch (A/B Footswitch) and flick between your guitar and banjo so the RC-300 will share the instrument input with both of them. Currently the issue is the the signal you have after your mixer and into the RC300 is SOOO loud that it is being heavily compressed to then come out of the RC300 with the loop, and is why it sounds horrible.

Hmm I will look into it but im still a wee bit confused because I use the mixer to control all the eq on the each in instrument and mic. So if i run everything into the looper and then into the mixer, I wouldn't have any control of that in fact not really sure why i would need the mixer then.

Thanks mate, I speak about this in the first video - but essentially, the 1st mic is for standard vocals, directly into mixer / interface. And the 2nd mic is specifically for looping. it gets plugged into my looper in the mic input. They get mixed separately that is the reason for 2.

Thanks for the helpful videos Carl. You introduced me to Maton, I thought yours here was cool, so my EMD-6 just arrived and I agree, super great little guitar and sounds awesome plugged in. Can you tell me why you have the sound hole plug in? Should I source one to have with me for loud live stages? Or, perhaps the guitar pickup, while not being played, is picking up ambient sound and throwing it on top of whatever else you're looping at the time. What gauge strings do you prefer? Thanks again!

Stewart's 58 Drive-In hey mate, yeah I use the feedback buster to reduce what the guitar picks up from the stage noise, also it’s handy when using overdrive:) definitely use 13-56 strings on it. I prefer elixir. With the smaller scale you need the heavier gauge strings for tone! All the best mate! You’ll love that guitar:)

Ah yes, I experienced my monitor wedge making a contribution to my vocal loop though my guitar. The feedback buster makes perfect sense now. I bought the Elixir 12 and the 13 Phosphor Bronze sets and put on the 12s. I'll try the 13s next. I also ended up shaving 1mm off the bottom of the bridge saddle. The truss rod was completely loose when I got it so I ended up giving it over 1 full turn. It plays amazing now with no fret buzz. Does your Diesel have the AP5-Pro preamp, or the Original? Mine is the original and I have added a tc electronic BodyRez pedal and it sounds like I added a microphone to my sound. Pretty cool.

Hey mate, Thanks! my 2nd mic just runs directly into my RC300 thats where I loop all my harmonies. No effects on them just dry signal. There is however a little reverb on the overall guitar and loop signals at the mixer. Hope that helps:)

Hey mate, its equal parts of the Pedal settings, Input signal volume to the pedal, The guitar pickup, and the EQ settings in the PA system. Ideally there should be only 1 frequency that you need to reduce in the PA. Check the settings on the guitar and make sure the volume isn't too loud going into the pedal first. What guitar do you have?

I have a pretty cheap, but surprising nice sounding Squier acoustic, I've just started to experiment with pedals in my setup, it's only when I use this one pedal for distortion that seems to cause problems even with relatively low volumes from a portable pa speaker so I can imagine things going tits up in a gig! No problems, the tricky thing with acoustics is that you can have a really nice acoustic - but the electronics are horrible. that might be most of your problem. unfortunately acoustic guitars aren't designed to be used with any overdrive or distortion, so its a constant battle to get the tone you want without feedback. keep messing with things - Id suggest finding someone with a decent PA to experiment through, so you're not wasting your trial and error on a system that could also be counter-intuitive.
