I was raised in the convent by the Dominican Nuns. I cannot compare my life there with others who were raised in a "normal" home, but I can say that I was truly loved and cared for by them. I was educated by them and went on to receive my degree in medicine. I have never missed or wanted what I never had ... Parents. I consider myself lucky and very special to have been loved by these truly wonderful and caring people💕

My late wife was a Carmelite in her youth. It was a life devoted to grueling work and prayer, meditation and silence. After two years as a Novitiate, she declined her final vows. But as long as I knew her, my beloved wife embodied the teachings of the The Little Flower and was a blessing to all who knew her. She did not gossip, kept secrets, was loyal and in spite of failing health, always eager to help and work hard. She remains my only devotion to this day. Bless those that carry on and bless her eternal soul.

PS: These Carmelites are fortunate, they make noise! In my wife's time you were frowned upon if you made noise while eating or if you were working. No idle chatter and TV and Radio were strictly rationed as were newspapers or magazines. Scrubbing floors on your knees and cooking with huge pots starting right after prayers and before Dawn.

Do not underestimate the academic achievements of these women. They are sent to the best catholic universities in Europe, they need to master a minimum of 3 languages, they have to finish an academic degree before final vow. They have to study philosophy, theology, and biblical studies like priest before admittance to the professorium. They are not enslaved, ignorant of brainwashed. Monastic people like these women saved our western civilization together with monks.

I think it's horrible that so many people have such mean things to say. To live in such a way that brings pure joy to your heart and peace to your mind is a beautiful thing in this crazy and chaotic time we live in! May the Lord bless others through your devotion to Him in love and prayer! I got the calling when I was young but life took me on another path and now, as a married person I am falling in love with Jesus and contemplative prayer all over again!

A classmate of mine went to join the Carmelite sisters after we graduated from high school. I never really talked to her a lot but she was pleasant to hang around with whenever I got the chance. She was always so quiet and was never really quick to anger when something went wrong. Most of the time in our classes she would be reading a book quietly to herself while everyone else was busy being noisy. She was a very strong Catholic. She’s always wanted to become a nun especially a Carmelite one. I may not be a strong believer in God but I know that she’ll find true peace and happiness in the sisterhood. I also know that she’s praying for me in there. She sacrificed a normal life to live this one. I hope to someday see her again. 🙂❤️

I'm not catholic, im an evangelical Christian, but I respect these womens way of life and I can understand the choice to live a life set apart from the world devoted to God. I once went to school across the road from a Carmelite brotherhood building and I never thought of them. I used to sit early each morning in another building next to them (on the same side of the street) and never thought of them, but here I am nearing forty seven years of age (some thirty two years later) having failed at all I have turned my life towards and only now am I beginning to ask for guidance. I am thankful my ignorance and the ignorance of so many others (distracted by the mechanisms of society) does not have a negative effect upon such quiet and unimposing society, else they of commerce’s wheel with their ability to refuse us inclusion would mean an end to our inclusion in life’s path. Thank you for your remaining presence in our lives, even though we at times forget to pay you the proper attention. God bless LM

To all the people who can't understand why they want to stay away from the world, think about it like this: when you fall in love with someone, I bet you want to spend all your time with them. They are the centre of your life right? These nuns are in love with god. They want to talk to him. Be with him. Read works on him. His voice is clearest when they are in silent contemplation away from the world. They have a desire to know God, speak to him, to understand him. I think to a certain extent, most intorverts will be able to relate to the idea of being by yourself in the quietness. Some people enjoy it. It doesn't feel like a punishment.

As I was taking some nursing courses for renewal of my RN license, this video caught my attention and as I started to watch it, it filled me with such a peace, I can totally say I left "my reality" for a moment and was in such a beautiful place filled with God's peace. I lived with the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco for almost a year as I was their nurse for the convent (total of 80 nuns). I have visited nursing homes so many times and trust me, there is a big difference. Many nursing home residents seem so lonely, sad and depressed compared to elderly nuns. I think the reason for this is not only prayer, but most importantly, the fact that they are constantly active and they are always surrounded by people that care so much about them. Many (not all) nursing home elderly need accompaniment, they need their family, friends and people that care for them to spend more time with them. Nuns are very hard-working people (I was impressed at how much they do for others), they also pray a lot and seem SO happy all the time, never alone or sad and those in their 70s, 80s & 90s are so active. Such a beautiful life when you choose to live that way. The Carmelite nuns in this video also do a lot besides prayer, which is so valuable for our world.

Romans 12:1 does not say thay one should live in confinement. Monasticism is not holy, not if you know what happened in convents in the XVIIe in France. But in some way, I would love to be able to live this turburlent world to live like they do. But then, how could I talk about Jesus to people, how could I testify, how could I offer Bibles, etc...?
@frankedwards40255 жыл бұрын
I admire them and could feel entirely homely in a place such as that, some people really don’t understand. Living a full life doesn’t have to be wild nor out there but simply living doing what makes you feel completed and whole. For some that is going out, having tons of friends, vacations, the nuclear family scenario. But as with these women, they found passion in their faith and I think frankly it’s amazing how they found it in themselves to live this way in how I wish I could.

Adeleine Tajora I was a former Seminarian for the Diocese of Port Of Spain. My advice, go for it, you may never know if that is what God is calling you to. I found that actually living the life is what makes the discernment much easier and allows you to see and hear what God is calling you to. Even if you don't make it the experience is always going to be a good one. I didn't make it because it wasn't what God was calling me to, but I will never forget my time in seminary the brothers I made and the growth as a human catholic being. only let God's will be done, good luck, Pax!

Lesa Fowers I used to be fascinated with nuns as well until I went to an all girls catholic school and experienced evil personified in the form of veiled women. I was traumatized but still had faith in them because it is unfair to judge an entire group over the sins of a few. Then in 1994 the genocide in Rwanda happened. Innocent people ( mostly Women and children ) , went to seek refuge in churches , monasteries and convents from being slaughtered by ethnic cleansing. They thought they were safe . They believed no one would kill them in the House of God. Only for the nuns and priests to lock them inside and go and call the killers and lead them to where the people were hiding. A million people were killed in 90 days. To this day I struggle with the veil.

Why did I find this so sad? God bless these extraordinary women. I am going to keep them in my daily prayers.

They do this so that people like myself with weakness that couldn’t commit to a life like this this, are prayed for. I am not Christian but I have the upmost respect for these wonderful women. It’s a pleasure to see them contented and challenged in doing what they believe and love. Whether it mirrors my own spiritual path or not as a pagan, I do encourage people to find some form of faith, and to hold it dear. I judge nobody aside from those who decidedly hurt others, and I hope that some people won’t judge me back. We are all sharing the same earth and it makes so much more sense to love each other and love each other’s similarities and differences. The sense of peace I feel from these women is palpable, I would really struggle to live as they do and I wish them only the best.

They are indeed words of wisdom, but why is the younger sister in front of her mouthing all the words? It looks very "practiced", and is a little disappointing. That said, all of those words are true. If only we can live in love all of the time...

Why are you not mentioning the thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of proven abuse cases done by teachers, boy scout leaders, uncles, fathers, protestant ministers, rabbis? Why do you only mention the FEW cases of abuse perpetrated by Catholic priests? You have been taken in by the lying news.

this is the worst comment section i have ever seen. i am, in fact, sort of surprised to see so many hateful athiests/agnostics. these women are perfectly happy with what they are doing, and why are yall so bothered by it? im agnostic too, but i dont badger others happiness. just because it’s not YOUR type of lifestyle, doesn’t mean others dont find contentment and happiness in it. get your head out of your asses and earn the respect you declare for.

They hate those who have proven to have lived a life of peace, serenenity, and camaraderie in the light of Christ because they themselves can't have it. So they debase those who do.

Fellow Protestants, if you hate nuns and Catholics so much, why even watch this video? There are millions and millions of videos on KZbin, I'm sure there are a few out there that will fit nicely into your narrow world view. Or, perhaps on the other hand, you might consider the fact that "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved"--and I'm pretty sure that covers most sincere Catholics quite nicely. These are women who have devoted their lives to Christ; and whether or not you agree with their method, you have to admire their dedication and love for Him. Jesus said everyone would know His disciples by their love, and yet what I see in this comment section doesn't look at all like love in comparison to what these women are doing. I'm not calling you unsaved, but encouraging you to search your own heart and ask: who is behaving like the true Christian here?

Having now finished watching the documentary all I can say is: if you're a Christian, and you can't see love for God and Christ pouring out of these beautiful women, I don't know what to say to you.

Lets just pray for those people who curse and persecute us, Because we all knew the true Christianity is not just using a lots of words but it is by action accordingly.. Catholic beliefs represent of God's love, to be holy and saints as what the apostles of Jesus did, and i saw in this video having humbled heart and deeply in love to Jesus,in other term this is the way to remain in his love and to remain in HIM...Viva Kristo!🙏

May I suggest looking up some of the Carmelite monasteries online? There are quite a few of them in the US (depending on where you live) that might help you. I know there's a Carmelite convent in PA that uses the Eastern Byzantine Catholic Rite and Liturgy as compared to the Western Rite as commonly used. As far as I know some of these convents do engage in some vocational retreats, which are retreats designed for those who are interested in their way of life and wish to have a 'sampling' of what their life behind the cloister is like. Being a Carmelite or any other religious order behind the cloister is not completely done in silence. There are some periods of recreation where they chat, engage in hobbies, entertainments including doing skits, etc From the looks of it and listening to their speech, I'm guessing this particular convent is in England or somewhere in the UK. There are lots of Carmelites throughout the world. In my opinion, Carmelites follow a Biblical-based spirituality based on that of St Elias the Prophet, who sought refuge from the wrath of King Ahab at Mt Carmel in the wilderness and the badlands of the region. After making his hermitage, the Lord spoke to Elijah and said, "Wait on Me...We need to talk!" As strong wind blew and Elijah (thinking God was in the midst of the windstorm) cried out, "Is that You, Lord?" And the Lord wasn't in the wind. Then a pillar of fire appeared before him and Elijah (assuming the Lord was in the presence of the fire), asked boldly, "Are You there, Lord?" And the Lord wasn't in the fire. Seeking all over the place for God, Elijah returned to his hermitage and it was there did he find the Lord in the form of a soft gentle and quiet voice....

And just when Elijah found himself enveloped in the Presence of the Lord by a band of Cherubim and Seraphim, he said, "With great zeal and longing, I have longed to be in the presence of the great Lord of Hosts!" This verse became the motto of the Carmelite Religious Order, whose spiritual roots stem from St Elijah (or Elias), but were re-introduced during the times of the Crusades when a group of Christian, a few Jews and converted Muslims were impressed by the spirituality and solitary lifestyles of the hermits who lived on Mt Carmel. Some stayed on in Palestine while others returned to Europe and wish to introduce and spread this way of life elsewhere, with the approval of the Pope Honorius III, of course. Some even traveled other places in Africa and the Far East, but due to political unrest, civil wars, religious persecutions, many of these convents and monasteries were destroyed and/or converted into forts or prisons, its members were ordered to disband and assimilate into society by resigning from wearing their religious habits and assuming secular attire. Following the 30 Years' War, many towns through Central and Eastern Europe were ideal targets of radical form of Protestantism like Calvinism and Zwinglism. In the town of Prague, many churches were either destroyed or severely desecrated by Calvinist forces and many religious communities had to flee elsewhere or were imprisoned and/or martyred until a counter-attack came to liberate the town a few years later. One story goes when the Carmelites and others pitched in to repair and restore one of its churches and monastery, the chapel was used to store garbage, among some of the refuge included religious vestments, several religious relics and artifacts. One of these was a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, given to the Carmelites by Princess Polyxenia, which in turn was given to her by her mother-in-law as a wedding gift from Spain. The princess was already a lay member of the Carmelites because she was already married and in her spare time spent some time on retreat there and did various acts of mercy and charity towards them and the poor. She donated the statue to the Carmelites and said, "This is my most precious and priceless possession...Honor and love the Infant Jesus and you shall never be in want!" One of the Carmelites, named Father Cyril of the Mother of God, found the statue in fair condition and kept it in his cell for safe keeping and private devotion. During a period in prayer, he heard a voice say to him, "Have mercy on Me and I will have mercy on you...Restore My Hands and I will give you peace! The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you!" Father Cyril noticed the hands on the statue were missing and went to a local artisan to fix the statue and another devotee of the Infant donated some jewelry and rings while another made some clothing and robes befitting the Infant and various liturgical seasons and feasts throughout the year. The French Revolution and its new constitutions guaranteeing certain rights and liberties to all its citizens under the clause of 'Liberty, Equality and Brotherhood', was somehow not as flawless as compared to that of the new republic of the United States. True, the French meant well, but the likes of Danton, Robespierre and others wanted to carry it off to a bloody extreme, of which they did. Many civil and religious members who supported the ancient regime were targets of the revolutionaries' wrath, including several Huguenots who supported King Louis XVI's liberal stance on religious tolerance and emancipation. Many of these religious were brutally killed out of hand or tried by a 'kangaroo court' before being carried off in tundrels in towns throughout France and executed on grounds of high treason. They were given the opportunity to receive a full pardon if they recanted, but none of them did. Prior to this, many of various religious communities cast a vote of martyrdom in the event they were willing to die for this. Their superiors reminded them this vote should by no means taken into lightly and that martyrdom was not only a great grace from God, but their actions would be construed for the greater good and that was to bring peace and order back to France, so as to not make their deaths be totally in vain. The Carmelite nuns at Compiegne knew this, especially when their property was confiscated by the new regime, perhaps turning their monastery into a prison or fort. (There are some in France that detained priests, some Protestant ministers, monks and nuns, offering one another religious comfort and solace. Some of the floors and walls of these places bear silent testimonies of the atrocities that happened there, including blood spattered stains on walls and floors to bullet-riddled walls. Souvez-tois les horreurs! (Remember the horrors!) French composer Francois Poulenc composed an opera about the nuns at Compiegne called 'Les Dialogues des Carmelites' (you can find various versions of this opera on KZbin...the final scene is a real tear-jerker!) But if you're interested about the synopsis of this work, let me know! It was based by a historical novel by a French novelist named Bernanos called '17 At the Scaffold' or 'Song at the Scaffold'. These women (along with several others who perished during the French Revolution), were canonized by the Catholic Church and acknowleged by their faith and courage in the face of death. It was said their story was told by a group of English Benedictine nuns who shared a holding cell with them before they were to be sent back to England on the condition they wore the former Carmelites' bloodstained habits and told their story on their return home. They said when the Carmelites prayed they did so with a deep and profound spirituality it moved them and several of the guards holding them and that of the prisoners to tears. And when they were take out to the scaffold to an angry mob, they quieted down to hear them chant the Psalms, prayers for the dying and 'Veni Sancti Spiritus' before receiving the blessing of their prioress, all of them singing until there was but one voice short. In the opera, they sang the 'Salve Regina' and just when the last one makes her way to the scaffold, her sister (who fled earlier in panic) comes out of the crowd, in fulfillment to her sister's premonition of the two of them dying together. So the other sister finishes the prayer as she too makes her way to the scaffold as well. "Praise and glory to God the Father Almighty, All glory and honor to Jesus the Son of Righteousness, Adoration and homage to the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete! Eternal and Triune God, All Praise to Thee, Now and Forever!" As the blade falls, the crowd ends in a semi-muted AMEN before they disperse leaving the stage in the form of a huge cross Many other countries were also similarly bitten by the 'liberty' bug too and many paid a terrific price for it. This caused a great deal of suffering and death on both sides. The sad part of this is it's still ongoing everywhere, including in places we never hear about nor getting a lot of media attention! We know it happens, it's just that when it is mentioned, it might affect our relationships with other countries in the form of commerce, public relations, etc Like the Prophet Elijah, who fled the wrath of King Ahab and his vain and evil consort Jezebel, he never stopped praying for his people and also for the king whom he had 'dissed' because he spoke the truth in the way he treated his subjects. In the solitude of Carmel, Elijah prayed and fasted for peace for God's people. The Carmelites emulated that tradition...and still remain to do so to this day. They pray for peace, justice...they love God for those who don't love God...in silence and solitude!
