Orchestra, choir, ballet and solo singers of the National Opera & Ballet of Ukraine, Odessa. (150 people). Inspired by Carl Orff (125th birth anniversary), Rudolf Steiner (95th death anniversary) and the city of Odessa, Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. "Fate is a woman".
Vocals: Alina Vorokh/Alina Druhak (soprano), Oleksandr Prokopovych (tenor), Bohdan Panchenko (baritone).

We will remind, earlier in the Odessa Opera House they turned to this work (for the first time “Carmina Burana” was shown here in 2013). The second production, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the composer, is not a renewal, but a completely new version. And, admittedly, this is more successful than the previous one. Obviously, not least because the director (choreographer and director) Gerard Mosterd did not try to come up with some kind of his own story, but followed the author’s plan, the music, creating a hymn to the ever-changing Fortune. Modern choreography, incredible plasticity fascinates the viewer. The director managed to get practically jewelry out of the performance from the soloists and the corps de ballet.

My son and his wife saw this performance in Antwerp and both of them just loved it. They commented on the combination of the remarkable music by Carl Orff and the visualisation of the choreography - so expressive, so dramatic and so beautiful. I only wish I could have been there too, but was far away on the other side of the world. I wasn't even able to at least babysit my little grandsons, while the mama and papa had a rare and wonderful experience at the theatre, thanks to Gerard Mosterd .

Whatever people may think of this production, it definitely is original and captivating. The renowned, modernist Orff music is visualized here by having the singers and dancers on the stage and make them interact. I have never seen this before with Carmina. It is unique for this work and over all this is a very poetic and mystical approach to a magnificent “gesamtkunstwerk” as Orff had in mind at the time he created this. Even though this ensemble is a renowned traditional, classical opera and ballet house, it does perform this creation in a refreshing, convincing and modern-classical way.

I will say that I was hooked by the production of the ballet, surprised by the movement of the choir, all together played with complex and modern colors. The movement of bodies conveyed the mysticism and epochs and the eternal theme of the boundaries of time. I got a unique emotion from watching on a laptop at home, what the audience felt remains to be guessed. Voor zijn wereldberoemde muziekstuk Carmina Burana (1937) liet componist Carl Orff zich inspireren door een reeks Middeleeuwse liefdesliederen. Oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor koor, solisten, twee vleugels en slagwerk, is dit een indrukwekkende dansvoorstelling geworden. De voorstelling opent met een spectaculaire scène die zich ruim drie minuten lang in doodse stilte voltrekt. Daarna doet Orffs muziek zijn intrede. Het levert een originele en beeldrijke voorstelling op met een spannende balans tussen het aandeel van het (dynamische) koor en de solisten. De wat geheimzinnige sfeer van Orffs muziekstuk wordt versterkt door het gebruik van het theaterlicht en videoprojecties. Top kijkervaring, zelfs op een scherm!

Operaesque modern Dance version of the classical hit-composition Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Beautifully designed/styled and performed. Lots of drama and lots of expression. Gorgeous choir (nice and loud!). Charming and daring dancers, a kids-group, soloists. Orchestra (live! ). All very wel done. Great performance. Hope to catch them on tour after corona

Today I saw the new version. This is the version from before the war....I love it....but when you've seen the new version... well it is obvious that while singing and dancing they deal with all the misery of more than a year of war .. and what is yet to come. The performance is really on the cutting edge as if everything is sung more clearly and with much more power and the difference between the subdued parts and when they go full out is so great. Really an amazing dynamic and the dancers go along with it .... the audience in the room, by the way...sold out again.. and when they sung their anthem after the first standing ovation.. they all sung, of course...but also perfect singing... so strange.. In this version people are clapping which is nice... this evening the visitors were in trance till the end and even then it took a while before the applause erupted ... but then immediately a standing ovation.. The tour is almost everywhere sold out and those who had a ticket won't forget this performance not easily.. it is very very rare to be there and feel the real power of music...

Essentially, Carmina Burana is a renowned, static and colossal piece of music by German composer Carl Orff. However, Gerard Mosterd’s powerful and complex choreography adds totally new dynamics and dimensions which create a visually intense and poetic performance. A lot of his original dance material had to be created and rehearsed in an almost impossible short time. With only a limited number of classical trained dancers who had to master the modern dance idiom with a lot of effort and dedication. So much happens on stage simultaneously, causing a need for extra eyes. This unique blend of singers, choir, dancers, mobile panels and video creates a one of a kind Burana experience. What a truly great and convincing theatreshow...!
