Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its chief conductor Cristian Măcelaru for its 75th anniversary concert on Oct. 29, 2022 at the Kölner Philharmonie. Soloists were Sarah Aristidou, Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke and Markus Werba, the choral parts were sung by the WDR Rundfunkchor, the NDR Vokalensemble and the boys and girls of the Kölner Dommusik.

Work Introduction:
If you want to experience all the riotous power, rhythmic drive and vibrant physicality of Orff's "Carmina Burana," you should be sitting in the middle of the orchestra
orchestra. Then you can feel firsthand the archaic violence of the half-cheering, half-despairing choral invocation of the capricious goddess of fortune Fortuna, sitting in the middle of the roughest binge, where a roasted swan sings its tortured melodies, experiences the mating stress of the young people in the village square, driven to excess by two pianos and drums, percussion, and the minne of the high couple.
All this was incredibly cleverly composed by Carl Orff in a new simplicity, influenced by folk music and current dance music, but not having much to do with the new music of the time, with Schoenberg or Stravinsky. Perhaps this was the reason why the Frankfurt premiere of the "Carmina Burana" on June 8, 1937, although criticized by some papers because of its music and permissiveness of content, but in the Nazi state the work
triumphant march through the concert halls - and even after the war hardly lost its popularity after the war. After 1945, the composer claimed that with the "Carmina Burana" he wanted to compose a work that was "not faithful to the line" - for which the musical modernities and the emphasis on an uncertain fate (instead of ideological certainty) would speak for this. On the other hand, the society that Orff depicts in his "secular songs" is down-to-earth and popular - much more so than in his late tragedies than in his late tragedies based on ancient Greek models.
Orff had discovered his source in an antiquarian bookstore catalog: the first complete edition of songs ("Carmina") and dramas, mostly written in Middle Latin, from the former library of the Benediktbeuern monastery (to which the adjective "Burana" refers). The question of the genre of the "Carmina Burana" remains interesting; today they are mostly performed in concert, but they have also been seen on stage or in film (by opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle). In any case, recently discovered sketches by Orff prove that he imagined the "magical images" in the subtitle as projections - perhaps a suggestion to reinterpret the "Carmina Burana" once with modern video technology.

What an incredible recording and performance of this amazing piece of music. I have a long acquaintance with this Carl Orff master piece. At age 11-12 ish my music teacher at a Hamburg Gymnasium was a former student of Orff. I wish I could remember his name , forgive me I am almost 80 :) ...... but mostly remember him by " Herr Proffesor", but at least I have his picture conducting a full performance of Carmina Burana at Hamburg Opera with my little face among the boy trebles. To this day I can almost remember all the Latin lyrics. Little did we boy singers know what we sang about :) Since that time I have moved to Canada and became involved in music , from producing concert recordings , to developing new artists , as well as hosting a long running Music program on the CBC. This performance attitude and clarity brings me back to those young years. Carmina Burana is still a highlight of my life, which includes major orchestras and performers. In my opinion this is the best presentation I have heard...... BRAVO!!! and Thank You

I played violin in high school and I told the orchestra teacher we should play carmina burana. he told me it's more of a chorus piece. in hindsight, in my elder years, it actually includes all 3 sections and is most technically demanding on the brass instruments. we could have totally nailed this

Carmina Burana was the ultimate musical experience of my childhood. When I was 13 I learnt all the lyrics in all those languages and sang all the songs with the LP we had at home. I have never heard a rendition of that quality since those days only ‘flat’ ones or ones with unpleasant latin pronounciation… until today. Your performance is vivid, passionate but also subtle when needed. Looking at the faces of the musicians and singers I could see focus and the happiness of the moment at the same time. Wish I could be there.

My experience with Orff's work is similar to yours; upon receipt of my first performance, I insisted upon memorizing the lyrics: "O Fortune you're as the moon, your status varies..always waxing, always waning over this detestable life"... as a Symphony member, I've found my fellow musicians tend to dislike the repetitive nature of each singular piece. I find it difficult to remain tacet when the score would afford me to sing with the choir. I appreciate your comment.

Fantastic how the tenor at "Olim lacus colueram" starts flapping his "wings", when he sings "cignus ego fueram" and the children could not stop giggling 😂 I really really like that the Tenor does not only sing but express what the poor swan is feeling. I loved that.

Ich suchte nach einer realen Konzert Aufführung und fand schließlich hier diese wunderbare Aufnahme, werde sie mir kaufen, diese Musik lebt in meinen Zellen seit 70 Jahren. Und wenn ich keine Karten kriege habe ich ja dieses wunderbare Surrogat hier. Die Tempi variieren scheinbar je nach Auffassung der Dirigenten, Orff war hier in der Partitur wohl nicht eindeutig, aber diese Version gefällt mir sehr gut. Er war ja sowieso für jede kreative Ausdrucksweise, auch eigenartige. Als Gymnasiastin war ich im Schulorchester und er kam zur Aufführung unserer Weihnachtsgeschichte, sprach ein paar aufmunternde Worte und wir waren stolz, ihn zu kennen. Besonders ich als Musikerkind, die mit seinem Schulwerk aufgewachsen war. Ohne die Münchener Musikschule hätten wir uns in meiner Familie eine Instrumentenausbildung nicht leisten können. Carmina Burana kannte ich damals noch nicht, habs erst mit 18 zum 1.mal als Opernaufführung gesehen mit dem Lebensrad als Bühnenbild. Sonst hätte ich ihm vielleicht meine Begeisterung mitgeteilt, wäre aber wohl doch zu schüchtern gewesen. Und nun bereichert mich das Internet mit Konzerten, Dokus und Biografien... The announcer said it’s name but I wasn’t able to understand it. I had to call the radio station in Michigan to find out what it was. Whenever I hear Carmina Burana, everything else gets put aside and I have to listen to the end. This was a wonderful performance. Being able to see the performers, the various sections of the chorus, the soloists, and orchestra, and of course, the conductor added a whole new dimension to the experience compared to just hearing a performance on the radio. I loved the emotional expressiveness of the soloists, especially the soprano.

Powerful and thrilling as was my privileged participation in 5 live performances with Brigham Young Oratorio Choir in the West coast before Christmas in 1962. Honorable and gifted are destined to be all who participate in this magnificent experience. BRAVO.

Stupendous! Wonderful! A masterpiece of pure genius! Carmina Burana stirs all of one’s emotions and the soul like no other classical musical masterpiece. It is unique and it is my favourite. For me, Carmina Burana represents the Yin and the Yang of life, which are the two main competing Cosmic Forces created by God to ensure the evolution of all Souls through their many incarnations and physical experiences of life. We can never materially evolve; we can only spiritually evolve, and music helps us to do this by raising our frequencies, in my opinion. Indeed, the Cosmos is a symphony of sounds or frequencies. However, what binds the Cosmos together are the frequencies of Love and Kindness, said to be measured at 528 Hertz, and that comes from the Creator God which is expressed through the portals of our hearts because we are all connected in this way. Well done, ladies and gentlemen! 🥰

The best ever performance of Orf's CB I've ever seen, heard and filed. My sincere gratitude to all the members of the orchestra and the great conductor who made the whole orchestra and all of three choirs, each instrument of the orchestra, each voice, each note and overtone sound outstandingly perfect as one. Above all that the superb operator's work brings to this video performance special magic... I wish I could feel that in present... Standing ovations to each and everyone of the ladies and gentlemen of the Orchestra, to the Conductor and each voice of the Choirs... BRAVO!

That Markus Werba is amazing - this whole performance is brilliant but i cannot stop replaying the Estuans Interius section. I grew up with this cantata playing in the house, it will always have a place in my heart, and I really need to see it live.
