Compared to manual measurement and superfluous human interpretation in shoe making, It’s incredible for anyone who understands CAD how much more precisely an accurate 3D rendition of the foot can lead to the best last possible. Yet so many people delude themselves into ascribing a misplaced monetary value to the mystic arcane art of bespoke last making by hand. Wake up people, the future is here so the pragmatism of technology correctly applied and a scientific approach will always yield better results in shoe making, than sentimental attachments to the imperfections of artistic and interpretive techniques.

First I’ve not insulted anyone, you do, second you should not make so big conclusions out of a “naive” comment. Third I am not nationalist at all. I enjoy Kisby’s videos because of the quality content, the distinctive features of the gests. Fourth, of the real passion you see. I just feel a little bit of proud when Kirby appreciate something that many spaniards don’t even know. Probably my intention was to appreciate the capacity to descern a product that in my opinion is imbued of some features that are not even physical, but cultural. Above all in a world where everything thing is getting uniform. In Spain we tend to appreciate the foreign better that own is part of our idiosyncrasy. I apologize if you got offended however.

I can't overstate how many people have tried this and resulted in total failure. The process of using 3D scanning technology to produce actual shoes is much more difficult than it would seem. Just like a bespoke shoemaker must interpret their measurements when carving a list, a technician from Carmina reviews all measurements vs. the initial 3D rendering of the last to ensure that the final last that is used to make the shoes is correct.

When Kirkby takes out the shoe tree he reads ‘made to measure for Kirkby Allison.’ Are the shoes made to measure shoes or is the shoe trees that are made to measure? Is it not a bespoke shoe? Does the scanner really matter? Is it better than a shoemaker with a measuring tape? One of my bespoke shoemakers have tried a 3D scanner but said that it should be calibrated quite often and was not faster to use than a measuring tape but much more expensive. The 3D scanner in tailoring does not make a great suit, is #D better for making a shoe? My experience with bespoke shoes where the shoemaker has a fitting where small changes can be made, the finished shoes always fit very nicely, even the first pair was perfect. And they are all made from a measuring tape, a pencil, and a print of the food.
@Honestcritic794 ай бұрын
First, the shoe tree I am assuming is not bespoke, that would be something that I would hope they would add, since they already have the 3d model, but it would still be difficulty with wood, a plastic shoe tree with injection molding from the scan would be a lot easier, but of course not as nice as wood. Second, the 3D scan does help for scale, if you have several customers in the shop, you can much quicker get the scans done than have someone there measuring each foot one by one. I think if they reduce the price, they can get more in volume and more than make up for it despite the smaller margins. Again, Carimina is trying to reduce the price of their shoes in my opinion, by offering bespoke to more clients, and reducing the need for someone to measure your shoes will save time and money for them in the long run.

How about not wearing them out before you install Heel caps for them? I begged Carmina shoes many times to install heel caps/plates but they only install the toe caps when ordering shoes from them. Would love to know why is that. To everybody out there, find a cobbler who carves out your heels to install metal heel caps/plates flushed with the heels before you start wearing your Carmina shoes. Another at least $20 to add to the bill plus buying the heel plates for the cobbler.

The process does not include any fittings but if they aren't happy with the final shoes, Carmina is quick to insist that they remake them. The beauty is that once the last is "perfected," you have it to make all future shoes on without any concern for fit. One of the great virtues of bespoke.

If they can’t hand welt it. What’s the point of bespoke. Has to be a complete product through establishing it via hand welt . Not good year
@kirbyallison5 ай бұрын
The point is the precision of the fit. There are a lot of people whose feet cannot be accommodated within the standard size and width range of stock lasts, even at a company like Carmina that has a massive range. For instance, there are many people with wide feet but narrow heels. No standard last, even wide models, can really fit these. Plus you have all the standard high/collapsed arches and high insteps. No question the hand welting impacts comfort, but fit is even more important, as evidenced by the discomfort a pair of ill-fitting bespoke shoes can cause.
