I'm glad you caught the "best friend" moment! When I watched I was like Sydney is his best friend...he can't say that to Claire because he knows deep down he feels more than friendship for Sydney. If they don't make them canon then we know the lead writers were smoking crack in the alley with Josh 😂

Amazing, edit! I honestly didn’t see them as a couple in season one, but the fact that the thought of Sydney stops Carmy from having a panic attack…wow. Also the scene with them under the table was more intimate than any scene with Carmy and Claire. I realized when watching season two that when Carmy talks to Sydney, he’s able to talk about his emotions, his past and his trauma more freely. She’s his safe space. I’m absolutely rooting for them as a slow burn couple that finds their way to each other while healing their own past trauma.

I started this show this weekend and I'm hooked. I didn't see the chemistry in season 1 and haven't gotten to the episode you mention in your comment. But there's a scene in season 1 where carmi gets his brother's letter, he's trembling and is trying to find the strength to open it, but he texts Syd!! I found it random to text her in such a moment and rationalized it as a deflection tactic. As I read your comment I see it wasn't random at all. They were laying gems since then that there is a deeper connection going on with these two!

@@mitztheo I forgot about that moment! Now I want to re-watch season one lol I definitely feel that Sydney is a comfort for Carmy. He feels at ease around her. I don’t think they’re ready for each other right now, but I would love to see them together down the line. I can’t wait for you to watch all of season two and see the deeper connections they build!

@@mitztheoWe actually see the start of his comfort in opening up to Sydney in S1e3 when she tells him her vision for The Beef. This scene is so important bc it sets up the basis of their relationship moving forward. Carmy trusts her bc they have a shared vision of what the restaurant can become. They get each other. With one another, they're "not alone." This is why she's the first person he tells that he's been going to Al-Anon meetings. We also see just how strong their shared vision is when she comes back in S1e8 and they go back and forth stating this vision out loud without needing to explain it to each other. A lot of ppl watching the show just see Sydney as his mentee, but that is not what she is. She's his partner. When he tries to do everything himself and treats her like his mentee, he messes things up, like S1e7. When he leans into her being his partner, she is comfortable leaning in too and the restaurant gets better, seen in the staff's growth, the table scene, & their soft opening. Yes, she learns from him but she also makes him better. They need each other. This better dynamic between the two of them is why him yelling at her looks different from S1 to S2, and has a very different result.
@belle208

i like to think that scene when she’s looking at other restaurant’s menus and carmy cancels on her for claire and she’s talking to one of the chefs about having a partnership and she gives Sydney a look kinda like be careful (I forget what she says) like a warning to Sydney that to me implies not to get emotionally entangled with your partner in business to which Sydney kinda denies like no it’s not like that. but idk i like to think that shows a bit of proof of this connection between them or is at least PART of the reason that chef gives her that look or could be one of the underlying reasons though not so obvious. and it the conversation under the table supports that in a way, Sydney has to clarify she wasn’t jealous (even though it might not be romantic) it’s jsut my own proof that there could be something 😂 i could be wrong

The show-runners have, to one degree or another, downplayed the Carmy and Sydney "ship" while spending quite a bit of budget, dialogue, and staging to reinforce it. This is typical of every consequential show I can think of that featured a core "ship" that eventually went "canon." Here are the three elements that I believe irrefutably indicate that the Carmy and Sydney "slow-burn" is not only real but actually core to the entire show's meanings: 1. Claire introduces the classic LOVE TRIANGLE, albeit with a core Freudian symbolism: Claire represents Carmy's Freudian retreat into his traumatic past, which in Freudian terms, Carmy undertakes both to relive yet again and yet somehow resolve that past that is, in fact, already gone. Claire represents the "ethnic," class, and cultural community of Carmy's past as a certitude of what he already knows. She was the unrequited love of this past now consumated; but even now, Carmy is strikingly passive. Claire initiates the affair, making the once invisible Carmy present, taking him back to his early teen years to relive and "correct" it. But to Freud's point, this time travel neither repairs nor resolves the past: it is already gone, already the realm of James Joyce's The Dead. BY CONTRAST, Sydney represents the Shock of the New. However kind, smart, and beautiful Claire is, she is NOT the redeemer and transformer of our PRESENT world. But Sydney is. The LOVE TRIANGLE is thus freighted with this deep meaning: EITHER Carmy will choose to remain imprisoned by his past world -- symbolized terrifyingly by his self-entrapment in the refrigerator room and his subsequent breakdown into his family's madness and rage at the season II conclusion, for which Claire can offer neither escape nor moral clarity -- OR he will choose the Shock of the New, Sydney. For it is Sydney, the force of transformation and light, who literally translates Carmy's vision for the Bear's redemption as a local sandwich shop into a reality, rallying, inspiring, and unleashing the warrior-as-artist ethos in Carmy's once demoralized army: she transforms the slacker Tina into the actual crack Brigade leader; she inspires Marcus to venture from middling baker into craftsman baker and finally master patissier-artist who might rival even the genius of Carmy and Sydney. In the wake of Sydney's galvanizing presence, EVEN the shattered, shambolic Ritchie stunningly, poignantly sheds his perennial chaotic defeat for a sleek, fiercely focused force of command , calm, and purpose. Sydney is THAT "fire" -- Carmy's words, not mine--of transformation. 2. The "Under-the-Table" moment is not a merely beautiful interlude that makes us wonder if Carmy and Sydney are, Claire notwithstanding, in fact the real "under-the-table" love affair. But the entire scene actually CONFIRMS Carmy and Sydney as the real love affair of consequence. The entire scene is an elaborate, detailed recreation of Renaissance painters Dosso Dossi's "ALLEGORY OF FORTUNE" and Sandro Botticelli's "VENUS AND MARS": Find those paintings online. Look at them. And there you will find, in essence, Carmy and Sydney as two lovers in the near IDENTICAL pose, position, and poise, lying together in their intimate, tender, eroticized moment. In Dossi's version, cornucopia -- food !!--literally hovers around the couple, the archetype of love couple, symbolizing how romantic, erotic love nourishes the body and soul and, in the case of the Bear, serving to remind us that identical to Dossi's two lovers in repose, Carmy and Sydney are literally surrounded by food, too, as Dossi's two "under-the-table" lovers restaged are in THEIR RESTAURANT. This "Under-the-Table" scene is a brazen ALLUSION to Dossi and Botticelli's paintings, BOTH to underscore and to CONFIRM the "under-the-table" affair of the heart between Carmy and Sydney "lying" in plain sight (literally, both hidden under the table, yet there in plain view for all to see, if one merely looks) 3. " I couldn't do this without you. I wouldn't even want to do this without you." Game. Over. This "ship" has left the harbour. FIRST, this is the declaration, rendered in such startlingly intimate, stark, and quietly passionate terms that Carmy has NEVER yet told Claire. Oh, yes, Carmy tells Claire that he is both grateful and fearful that their affair seems as a lovely but fragile as a dream -- and it is. But tellingly, Carmy NEVER declares how EXISTENTIALLY vital Claire is to him in every possible way in the realm of Love Supreme. But he literally tells HER--Sydney--this very core truth truth of his heart. SECOND, in these spaces away from the world -- the gritty little alley and now "under the table" -- Carmy suddenly, strikingly transforms from wounded, withholding, volatile hunched-over boy to a MAN of quiet, determined, righteous power, speaking a stark but lyrical poetry of Truth. He speaks this, HIS Truth, to ONE person alone: HER. And that Truth, CARMY'S SPOKEN TRUTH, is how central SHE is to him and how HE is committed to making right, being right, doing right by HER. That woman is Sydney THIRD: What would Claire -- ANY woman in love with one man --think, feel, and KNOW about that man were she to see him sharing THAT intimate a moment, that intimate a pose, speaking that passionate a Truth SOLELY to HER, a genius-level artist, brilliant, and undeniably beautiful young woman who is now in that instant revealed irrefutably as THE woman for whom Claire's supposed love "CANNOT DO" without and "WOULD NOT WANT TO DO" anything without. Game. So. Over. Thus, the love triangle. But what so utterly lifts this triangle above the maudlin and the soap opera are the moral, ethical, and existential stakes it entails. Upon Carmy's choice pivots EITHER his surrender to the imprisonment within HIS PAST of family madness and the regime of his Chicago suburban community-of-origin's provincial, imprisoning racial, cultural, gendered "norms" ...OR to make the metaphorical and real Crossing to the distant shore: setting sail, as it were, to the community of meaning, the transformational power of Art, and the redemptive hope of Love, simply put, that Sydney embodies, represents, and offers him. THAT is what makes The Bear so vital an allegorical meditation on Art as the means for Transformation. And the core of this allegory is the passion play of choice and redemption that Carmy must make, and that choice, ALL that it entails and means, pivots on HER: Sydney.

Speaking of symbols, have you noticed how at the end of season 8 when Carmy is making dinner to claire, It cut to sydney changin clothes and the frame purposelly show a three of swords tattoo on her shoulder?! AND then, at the beginning of season 9, Claire and Carmy are in bed together, and then suddenly it cuts to sydney chest while she adjust her uniform and there’s a red stain over her heart! Like It’s driving me insane how they are giving all this hints and nobody picks them up
@montymason1647
@montymason1647 Жыл бұрын
@@gloria7190: YES! OUi! Sì! Sí! How right you are! The Three of Swords connotes a heart pierced by said swords, symbolizing the pain inflicted by words, actions, or, conversely words and actions not taken by the most crucial of loves. HOWEVER, in Tarot, the same insignia juxtaposed against rain and/or storm clouds can also symbolize, what else, redemption. How hauntingly appropriate, as Sydney is the Transformer/Redeemer in the passion play segment of this allegorical show. Sydney, as with Carmy, is also deeply wounded, haunted by her family's past. Unlike Carmy, the driven, visionary warrior-as-artist Sydney is endowed with conscience and empathy, no matter how strong-willed and formidable a figure she is. Carmy is wounded and brilliant, but he is revealing the clear signs of remaining willfully imprisoned in his legacies (hence, the terrifyingly clear metaphor of his self-induced imprisonment in and resort to his family's rage and madness within the refrigerator room at Season 2's conclusion) As the problematic but brilliant cultural anthropologist Joseph Campbell (Sarah Lawerence College) so insightfully wrote, the person whom we love has the greatest ability to inflict the deepest wounds upon us, but that very same person almost alone has the ability to salve and heal those same wounds. There is no question that Carmy is falling ever deeper for Sydney. But there is a powerful, overriding question upon which the matter or choice resides: whether the madness and brutality of Carmy's family has not only wounded him but also marked him with the same madness and brutality. There are worrying signs. For all of his galvanizing qualities, Carmy is flawed in the darkest of ways. In a very real sense, Carmy wants both Claire and Sydney for himself, solely on his terms. This is raw patriarchal self-privileging. For Carmy, Claire represens the certitude of his past, his confining, constricting suburban community of origin, which however terrifying it was, provides Carmy a sense of the known, the familiar, the reinforcing. By contrast, Sydney represents the hope and Transformation of the present and future: creativity, community, the eros of both desire and Art. He loves Claire, perhaps, but there is no doubt that he is falling ever deeply IN love with Sydney. But is Carmy prepared for the metaphorical and literal Crossing that love demands? That is to say, will he be prepared to give of himself as Sydney can for him? There are deeply moving, startling signs -- his de facto out-of-nowhere confessions of love; his ceding over half his family legacy to HER, Sydney; his surrender to HER. He flees her. He runs back to her. He shares a bed with Claire but literally dreams of Sydney. He burns bridges to HER but bequeaths half his family legacy to HER, Sydney. No matter where he flees, he runs back to HER. But there are also the damning contradictions: he confesses to Sydney under tables, in grotty alleys, but not yet in the "real" world; he outright lies to Sydney as to who Claire is : a lie that Sydney is more than wise to, for Carmy's eliding truths about Claire ironically tells the great Truth for which he cannot or will not yet take responsibility: Carmey is absolutely unwilling to share, let alone, lose Sydney as his "Under-the-Table" romantic love. But he blinds and deafens himself to how that wounds both Claire and Sydney. Indeed, what would Claire --what could ANY woman in love with one man (or other woman) think-- feel, and know should she have seen Carmy and Sydney together under that table, with Carmy confessing the love in he has for Sydney (that IS what Carmy was doing!) in a poetry of Truth that he has never found for Claire? Clarie would have known instantly that Carmy was never hers. Sydney OWNS him. But what can that say of Carmy's self-privileging, his blindness and deafness to the love of his heart and the love of his past? The Bear, I think, so brilliantly explores Art as the means of Redemption and Transformation, while questioning the show's own assumptions: can Art truly cure all? If the artists themselves are so wounded and flawed in character to match their own aspirations, what hope, then, can Art really offer us? THAT is why l'Affaire du Coeur between Carmy and Sydney matters so vitally: the brilliance of the writing and above all the performance and chemistry of the two principle actors bring the ethical, moral questions to life through that most vital of things, Joseph Campbell's double-edged sword of love, indeed.

THIS is def not 1 of those times. maybe the wrters didnt mean 4 it to happen and the chemistry is coming from the actors, maybe you just dont like them as a pair, but u honestly cannot tell me there isn't sizzle btwn them. i'll give u s1. i'll give that cz they were getting to know each other, building good rapport cz they see and understand eo in a professional sense, getting acquainted, that's ok... but s2? nah... the chemistry was there, and it wasn't just the "we're besties" chemistry either. whether or not they're end game, the chemistry is still there. for those saying syd and cuz, i thought they'd go that route maybe but they've just evolved their reltshp into buds or like family. i don't see, personally, sparks. maybe they'll make it happen by giving them moments later, but as it stands, nah. same w syd and marcus, which just seems more one sided frm marcus. and carm and claire.. not feeling it. don't knw if it's intentional, or maybe it's just me, but i'm just not feeling this whole "the one who got away, and now she's back and i still feel the same way about her" thing. maybe its just me.. idk

You night need a magnifying glass. That whole conversation under the table, the stares, and their soft voices was mind-blowing. You should probably watch s2 ep 8, 9, and 10 in slow-motion.

If the romanticisize it fine - but I'm totally here for them just finding a best friends. Someone they trust and can open up to. Somehow would be even more beautiful.

I feel the closeness. A beautiful friendship. I don’t see them as a couple. Somehow I hope they will never be a couple. Because sometimes all u need is such a good friend that u can depend on completely. Sometimes romance can ruin it 😂

Sometimes romance doesn’t ruin it though. We’ll see what direction the creators, producers, and directors go with them, but I really don’t think anyone should assume that a romance between them would ruin anything. That’s a hefty assumption to make.

idt people realise that this is not meant to be a love story. thats clear. not all male female onscreen relationships need to be romantic.

Only…the enigmatic Mom: we have no idea of how she behaved towards Dear Marcus…there’s an element there of him needing to compensate: And from whom was the package from Copenhagen…we’re actually TOLD of that! Given Will Poulter’s status now, & the delightful ease of the Bakery Sequences, nothing would surprise me: Watch the episode ‘Bolognese’ very carefully, & in the ‘countdown’ sequence - with the gas inspector, we get a blink-of-an-eye glimpse of Sydney’s past… Her devotion to Carmy is plain as day, but Syd isn’t here for the dating game: she sees into people, & what she sees In Marcus is… …back to enigmatic Mom? 💔
