Scotty, I remember that this car is how I found your channel when you FIRST started building it, and I'm proud to have been around since then to see all of your epic builds. Y'all Down Under get alot of cars that we can only dream about here in the States. Turbo Taxi has always been a great interest for me because there are only a handful of Barras here in the US.

G'day from West Australia, Scotty😉 Gotta say LPG systems have come a long way from the year I decided to make a twin mixer plenum for my 1986 model ZL Fairlane, 4.1 Litre. 800cfm of gas Reasearch mixers a omvl converter a 70 litre tank in the boot and a 10mm gas line running to the converter. And it was bloody quick pushing a 2.77: 1 ratio rear end. LMAO I thought I spent some money. It was a deposit on the system you are running.🙂👍👍

Ring gap !! Didn’t get away with this one ! Lpg must create a lot more heat ?
@ktmr8

Absolutely!… would still be alive today running 10’s if the bottom end had just been pulled down and ring gap added 🤷‍♂️
@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does create more ring heat, because LPG is a dry fuel and doesn't have the ability to cool the rings like a wet fuel (petrol) extra ring gap would have more than likely saved this engine. Looking at the piston Scotty pulled up there is no signs of lean out damage, this looks more like the rings nipped up and tore the ring lands out.

Noice work Scotty, Never played with LPG as a performance option but used it on plenty of daily drivers and light trucks back in the day. The issues? Many.... and for a tightarse fuel it sure was expensive to maintain and repair lol. BTW I could smell the LPG farts just watching........ Vile stuff :-)

Scotty , if you had of run a Liquid injected LPG system from the get go you would have likely already achieved your goals. I have a VY LS1manual SV8 that has a OTR , Mafless tune and a LTG Liquid gas kit on it, otherwise the car is completely stock even the exhaust system , after doing a 98 octane petrol tune with EFI Live it made 237 rwkw's , swapping over to LPG and re tunning it for best results on LPG the power jumped to 262rwks. You'd need a cam change for that much power on 98. I'm currently building a HT with a L98 and LSA blower running on twin LTG liquid kits hopping for 650+ hp.

Tunnel vision has run the fastest LPG cars in the country, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing. 264rwkw on 8cyl vs 490?rwkw on a 6 cylinder turbo is not comparable either.
@craigritchie1933
@craigritchie1933 2 жыл бұрын
Very true , you may have missed the point I was trying to make , the VY isnt a race car, the point I was trying to make is that "Liquid " injection make more power than 98 octane perrol and the kit Scotty used is a Vapour injection kit that makes less power that 98 octane petrol so had he chosen a Liquid kit he'd probably gone quicker. The Liquid option would have needed two fuel pumps in the specialized lpg tank but they don't need a second ecu to run nor a vapourizer in the engine bay so the cost of a streight gas conversion becomes more comparable to vapour kit conversion . The point to my VY is that I have a reliable dayley driver ( for 12 years now) that has more power than stock LS1 and is as cheap to run as a 4 cylinder , when it was first put on the dyno completely stock it made 197 rwkw's, now i get 262rwkw's and a car that has no trouble returning 11.5 lph on the freeway and pulls the tandom trailer with a Commodore race car on it at 110 kph and returns 15.5 lph. lpg is currently 91.9 cents where i live and 98 is about $2:35 cents a little , do the math, its cheap as to run , try pulling a race car that with a twin cab diesel and see how it compares , the VY eats them for breakfast on the hills and never drops under 110kpk and only cost 1/2 as much for fuel ....just sayin

@@craigritchie1933 about 8 or 9 years ago I tried to get someone to do a liquid injection lpg setup on my ba XR8 ute and no one wanted to do it. I’ve done 400,000 kms in that time all on 98 unleaded, the thousands I’d be ahead now! Hearing about ur ls1 on gas makes me wish I coulda got it done back then

I'd read about "Liquid " lpg in a performance magazine about 1995 and it then took another 17 years for an ADR approved kit to become available for my car , they were/are expensive and you had to push hard to get one but i had to have one. My cars now done 300,000k People are now saying that LPG isn't worth having because its become too expensive at around $1:00 a litre however the savings are bigger now than they ever were. Most people don't realize they can still retain a simular amount of power and to what they currently have on petrol with big savings 🤔

Great work Scotty. I miss the when lpg was 20cents a litre. I think street machine did an article on a 202 blue motor years ago that was on the dyno. I could be wrong but I thought it ended up with a gas research mixer on a vk efi manifold. It would be nice to see this thing go a 10, A last hurrah for lpg. Thanks street machine.

Btw, we did get a Ford 4.0L six cylinder here in the States, but it was a V6 and the first generation was overhead valve and the second generation was SOHC and was never offered with a turbo. I had a 1994 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition and it had the 4.0L OHV Cologne V6 (160 HP 225 lb ft) with a A4LD pile of shat auto trans and the 97-01 Explorer had the 4.0L SOHC and it made 210 HP. I pulled my 4.0L out of my 94 and swapped in a 302W with an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger. That truck was jacked up with a 6" Skyjacker kit with 33x12.50s on it and it made 402 whp at 15 psi. It was 2WD because I lived in Florida and it's all flat, but it was alot of fun and it wasn't slow. I moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania back in 2000 and I bought a 1995 Ford Ranger Super with the same 4.0L OHV and I put my supercharger kit on it with a different intake manifold. It was also 2WD and it would lay an 11 for 50 feet before it caught traction. I have always loved to modify my vehicles and I've owned 68 of them to date.

I have to agree with the complexities of running LPG on NA let alone adding boost many years ago I toyed with the idea of an AU Intech on Gas worked out too much money and not exactly feasible such as using liquid LPG Injection much more reliable but expensive. And sadly when Fords wear its usually the pistons on the back on the engine I remember 250 logs and x flows right through to E series Intech and Barra but in these cases mainly just wear and tear over years but you were right.

ffs guys these internet ' see how much power they can handle' always f_ck up not because they didnt have forged pistons and fancy ass rods, its because they didn't gap the piston rings to suit greater expansion due to greater heat caused by boost. If you're doing this at home, ffs just gap the rings on a stocker , file open the gaps so theyre larger, put it all back together, turn up the wick and enjoy. What happens is the piston ring ends butt together due to not enough gap, and they bite into the bore, but because the piston is travelling so fast, it just breaks in the ring landing and takes chunks off from the sides. To be fair to what the guy is saying, E85 would have survived at this power level because it runs a lot cooler than LPG, the pistons are cooler thus there's less expansion of rings, but where the limit is exactly on a stock, ungapped engine running e85...700 hp, 800 hp? in that sense, and as Scotty says, its a 12000 dollar experiment, sort of a useless experiment as 99 percent of people wont pay 12000 to replicate, but educational nevertheless.

i think before i went for a full build motor, $$$$ i would have been keen to pull it down rebuild it back together as the stock bottom end but hypereutectic pistons, full dynamic balance and do all the little bits. mod oil feed holes to the mains by filing or drilling the oil feed holes into the main oil so i feeds directly onto the bearing not just half a holes worth of oil, i think that makes sense?? the tiny bits that cost nothing, mostly. match every mating hole everywhere, every hole that joins two surfaces. plus any of the mods you have already done. really test the limits what still a basically stock Barra.

One has to be revered machined for the timing chains. But hey, we are talking 48 valves and 8 litres. Your expertise and know how could make it a reality. I know you guys are up for a challenge, right? Give it a crack. The euro market will pay the bills via YT.

I won a free LPG carburetor system in 2000 to fit to my 302(W) - gas was 19cpl!!!(Petrol 80cpl)!! So for the next couple of years had a ball running around for next to nothing! Today the system is still running faultlessly and LPG is $1.30 petrol is $2.35!!!! My work car was converted to LPG and government paid us to do it!! Still running and on a busy work week (pulling trailer) $40 for the week in fuel!! The good old days of LPG are over if you wish to convert or build a system. I would find a dedicated G6 with LPI or Holdens equivalent!

What about running an old school mixer like an Impco 425 or Gas research? Might have to twin them up but will certainly flow enough LPG

Can you add NOS so you can monitor the cylinder temperatures and keep you from frying pistons

Why not run 6 Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensors and tune around melting engines? The ECU is more than capable... Then you could turn down the power when the cylinder temps get out of control.

Sure we can do that but I suspect it would trip every run and we'd never get tgat 10

Half of the Grill is Blocked start by removing that grill opening all the Holes or replace it with a custom one so the car can breath! 600HP requires cooling and why you keep blowing engines!

It comes from combustion gases and partially unburnt fuel escaping past the rings into the sump, contaminating the oil

Maybe next time you can try dropping the engine and trans together out the bottom? Not that much more to undo and makes it a lot easier.

@@STREETMACHINETV it sounds like it but it really isn't that bad, I've done it many times and it is my preferred way. In my opinion it is alot easier than you think and doesn't add any more time.

I presume the lovely grey coloured oil draining out of the sump is not a healthy colour. It is grey because green coolant got into it or because the engine ran on LPG? Or because the rings gave out and the burnt gas blow by colours oil grey?
