We had great success with magnetic letters with our 2 year old (26 months). We started with letter sounds and he picked up the letter names from songs and videos on his own. We live in Japan so we got him a set of magnetic Japanese characters too and after he had mastered A-Z he became obsessed with Japanese sounds and now knows all 46 of them too. He loves looking for alphabets and hiragana when we go out. I love your idea about the wristbands! We're trying to follow his interests rather than drilling him, but he LOVES words and numbers. Your tips are so valuable thank you!

I love all your videos!!! Need to watch the potty training video because she is starting to let me know! I started introducing upper case letters first when she was around 13 months and she is 18 months and knows 17 confidently! She can identify them but still learning to show her sounds. The other day in the car I heard her making the “h” sound and sounding out the word house! She was going, “h-h-h-ouse” I was so proud because I didn’t prompt her to say that! We’ve taught her sign language as well and did her first sign at 9 months. I feel that her being exposed to different ways to communicate is why it’s easy for her to learn new things! My mom sometimes speaks to her in Spanish, so we are trying to fill that spongy-brain of hers!!!

Thank you so much! My toddler is now 17 months but he does not want to sit still. All he wants to do is run around and play with anything that has wheels! 😩 any advice? Usually if he doesn’t want to sit and learn I just explain to him what he is doing like “You are running” “how many wheels does this have?” Things like that.

Hello!! Thank your for these great videos!! Will you do a part 2 for this soon? I know your busy with your kiddos but curious. I’m stuck.. I’m barely in AMT but I already have questions haha😂. Ok so we live in Mexico and we mostly speak Spanish at home. Last night my child asked her dad “what letter is this?” He said the letter name… in Spanish! She was confused bc I’m teaching her the letter sound in English only right now (since she’ll learn in Spanish next year in school anyway). So when do we introduce the actual name of the letters? You mention here that when they master the sound teach the name… so does that happen on the first day if they “master” it that same day or is it once all of the letters are mastered? Because of that incident, today I tried teaching her the name of each letter but it felt confusing and maybe I just don’t know how to do it (I’m really trying but I already feel like a struggle being a good mom that with teaching her this I keep questioning everything 😢). Also, when do we teach them the lower case? When we read to them is it confusing if the letters are lower case? Any tips for when the child is bilingual? Thank you kindly in advance!

Thanks for this. My 22month old baby already knows the letter names, how can I get her to learn the sounds without confusion? :) Cheers!

So fun! When she holds up a letter and says the name, affirm her and expand on it! For example, “Mama look! S!” “Yes! S! /ssssssssssss/!” That’s the s sound! 😅 With just some simple repetition it’ll come!

@doinggreat974 Жыл бұрын
Can you please explain why teaching letter sound first? Better teach a child letter name first then when the child grows older say 3-4years then teach them letter sound. Cause from sound to letter name transition isn't confusing for a child? Please answer
@KeeKeeNice10 ай бұрын
from my understanding...& I'm talking with my 1st, he's 13mos...but teaching the sound integrates into reading and phonetics, it's never so much about the letters themselves. Sounds make words, letters make sounds needed for words.
@mr.O-theOtter3 жыл бұрын
Ok, I have a question about teaching upper case first though.. wouldn't that be kind of onfusing because most words they are exposed to are all lower case, they see lower case way more often so doesn't make sense to teach those first? I hope this makes sense.. Thanks for the video :)
@CarnahanFam3 жыл бұрын
Totally a great question! I actually addressed this in the video but then ended up cutting it out 😅 Glad to address it now! It’s definitely true that they will be exposed to my lower case letters during reading! But the difference in time between when they’re just starting learning letters and to when they are beginning reading is generally a significant enough amount of time but it actually doesn’t impact their ability to recall the letter sounds as they read! Whereas when they are just starting out with letter names and sounds, the structure of the uppercase letters makes it MUCH easier for them to learn initially! Overtime as they learn uppercase letters, they have a more solid foundation for learning lowercase letters and then later transition into reading! Let me know if that answered your question! 💛
@user-cx5fz2xl6o3 жыл бұрын
I had read about introducing them to lower case letters first too but decided to do it the Carnahan way 😄 and it paid off!! My 2.5 yr old girl knows all letters and sounds and we are working on the reading now. Despite a long summer break she still remembers everything and is eager to learn more 🤗🤗😀😀 honestly it was a LOT of playing and drawing which she loves.
@meditationformoms74493 жыл бұрын
I never thought about this when teaching my son... when I wrote letters and words out for him I always wrote uppercase but many pre-made resources I used had lowercase so I guess he was exposed to both right away.

Hi, I have a question. My daughter will be 2 in January and I’ve been trying to teach her words and get her talking. I watched your 1000+ word toddler video but anytime I try teaching her, she laughs and shakes her head no so I feel like shes smart but just doesn’t want to say words, if that makes sense? Is that normal? Love your videos btw!
@CarnahanFam3 жыл бұрын
You’re doing an amazing job Kibby! Try doing something that is particularly interesting to her and start with very simple one or two words (whenever she’s at) during that play! Maybe it’s baby dolls, or coloring, or building blocks! Figure out what her interest is and try to capitalize on that! Something else that works super well is being SILLY! 💛 Laughter reduces tension and any anxiety your child might feel about perceived expectations! Maybe you put a shoe on your head and call it a hat! Be the best audience for yourself! Laugh! Roll around, give yourself a good time! As you continue silly play and your fighter gets involved, you can start encouraging more verbal involvement! And of course, I always advocate for EXPECTING a response for phrases you know she is capable of. Maybe it’s “more” or “milk” or “up”. They catch on pretty quick when they see you MEAN IT when you say they won’t be picked up until they say “up!” Keep up the great work Mama! And we’re SO glad to have you here on our channel with us! 💛

my son knew his abc and 123 before saying actual words he was saying it fluently at 15 months old. And now he’s 2 yes and 3 months he’s delayed on speech but is saying new words everyday but still, can say his abc. and count to 20 if i push him there and he counts backwards he knows his colors and can color code in tablet games as well it blows my moms mind (his grammy) recently he understands that lettters make up words so when i read or my mom reads to him or daddy he will pick up his wipes and start pointing to the letters on it abd babbling pointing trying to read!!!!! he was just diagnosed w mild autism. so plz know all kids are smart and all his miles stones differently and don’t compare any kids to yours bc they know 1,000 words

If babe knows the letter as in they recognize it do you wait until they also repeat the sound before moving to the next letter?
@CarnahanFam3 жыл бұрын
Great question! If I'm focusing on the sound and that is my target, then that is what I go for before moving onto the next letter. For example, if my Ainsleigh brings me the "O" and says it's name "Mama! O!", but we're trying to focus on sounds, I'll say "Yes! This is an O! O makes that /o/ sound! /o/ /o/ /o/! Oooooooctapus!" (while showing the letter and wiggling my arms like an octopus" - so always positively affirming the fact that they want to say the letter name, and then reinforcing the sound that the letter makes with LOTS of repetition!

You just took me back to all of my RICA studying!! It wasn’t tell I took my reading instruction classes that I realized wow I add the schwa sound to a lot of letters and it’s wrong. Hey Mama! First, you are doing a phenomenal job! You should be so proud of yourself and of your little girl already! Next, if you haven’t seen our “how to teach your baby to talk” video - we’ve got tons of EASY things you can do throughout the day to encourage - rich language environment! Next, if you’re in the US, I’d look to see if you have an “Infant Toddler Program” in your area. It’s a free program that if your child is showing a significant need, they provide specialists to help! Our Ainsleigh was in the Infant Toddler program from 5mo to 1 year to help with a gross motor delay caused by her reflux! HIGHLY recommend their program! 💛 Sending hugs your way!
