This is fascinating, my little one is 23 months now and speaks sentences. You'll be surprised to know that less than 4 months ago he couldn't say one word! Yep, at 19 months he couldn't say anything. I literally read all day constantly to him and narrate everything we do and see during the day. That simple!

@@celestegibbs6527 for the longest time we thought he could hear, but one day we put a phone behind him and rang the beeper and he didn't move his head or flinch. The next day I made an appointment to have his hearing checked and he had the tubes soon after. He has Asperger's but I had no idea he could barely hear.

To anyone who has been doing all of these things but hasn’t heard words yet, don’t worry and keep doing what you’re doing! Babies are all different. They have different learning styles and different time frames for certain developments. I’ve noticed my baby collects information for quite a while before she acts. Your baby might enjoy hearing those words many times before they feel confident enough to say it themselves. Have patience with them, and it will work out ❤ As long as your pediatrician is not concerned, go with their flow and keep on teaching them

Brilliant! It is always great to see babies doing good learning progress…. Just always some room for learning and growing . Everything we see and touch can be communicated but how we do it matters . Go eye level with your child , turn them to face you or speak to someone but down to their eye level . Words should be not excessively loud but loud enough for them to hear words and clear . Show the child how you pout your lips when you say the words . I even show them if possible my tongue movement. The best way is saying it over and over and over again . Children learn from repetition. And whats more important is that the connection between parent and child as that is how a childs microbiome is effected to stimulate growth of brain development . And the love and acceptance that we are all different, what a boring world it would be if we were all the same.

Every child is different. Mine will be 2 in 1 wk. He speaks baby language and makes sense sometimes lol, his very intelligent and chat on a pretend phone conversation to me. He speaks to the tele when watching his cartoon, and he sings along. He reads books with me and says the words I've repeatedly and points to it, he picks the book he wants to colour or read. He was born premature but getting there, im proud of him.

I'm an SLPA, and these are all strategies that we encourage parents to use! A note on the rephrasing - you don't have to expect them to copy; you can just say what they said in a grammatically correct way without expecting them to imitate. As you said, they will absorb it!

I would just like to say that I have ADHD and well everyone that knows me has told me to shut up most of my life because I don't stop talking and this has turned out to be a blessing my son started talking early he never used baby talk and he has scored above average in the reading comprehension and language since preschool. So I would say yes this makes a world of difference.

My daughter is three years old now, she speaks to me in English, to my wife in some English but mostly Chinese, at school the base language is French and when she plays with local friends she has a mix of French and Wolof ....we live in Senegal, West Africa.. This is really helpful and reassuring honestly. My son has been saying mama since 2 months and he has always associated “mama” and “mom” with me. He’s 6 months now and has been responding accordingly to needing a bottle or a diaper change when he actually needs them if I ask him but his babble talk is still very limited and I want him to learn that it is okay to talk more even if he doesn’t understand language yet.

My 20 months old JUST developed an interest to books. Before I would pull one out & he would run away. as of right now there’s not much reading going on still, however he really enjoys having me point out what things are. Books like 100 first words where there are lots of pictures are his favorite. Just last night he actually let me read a little bit to him before he took off, but we’re making progress!

I do sort of narrate to my daughter and say things like "were going to the shops now bubba" or "all done" when she looks like she's had enough food or when it's time to put something she's playing with away, I don't read with her or teach anything, but tomorrow I'll be getting some babies first word cards and narrating more and reading because I feel like I've failed as a mum by not doing these things to help encourage my child to develop and am so surprised how your 1 year old is talking, I know every kid is different and progresses differently but I definitely need to work on this stuff and put a lot more effort in, thank you for your help 😊

I wanted to comment to give some encouragement and hope to parents out there and to thank you, Kaleigh, for these videos. I previously commented on your Birth Vlog video that my son was only saying ~20 words at 19 months. He turned 2 just days ago, and the last 3 months he's had a complete transformation! I stopped counting his words after the 200 mark, which happened at about 22 months, but I estimate he says over 500. Now he's saying 4-5 word sentences and he's counting everything around him. He's always been extremely shy, so I think part of the issue was he lacked confidence in speaking. But perhaps more importantly, I've been very intentional about modeling, narrating, and expanding his existing phrases. I spent a lot of time worrying about his speech and I'm elated with his progress. Guess I'll have to find something new to worry about (isn't that what moms do best?)

I’ve been doing some of these already (my baby loves playing with the light switch and sounds a lot like your baby when she says oofff, it’s super cute :) ) and will incorporate more of these tips, like narrating a whole lot more. It really takes consistency and time for them to catch on. Sometimes weeks or months. I also want to add, from reading the comments maybe a lot of mamas and daddy’s out there feel like they haven’t done enough because baby doesn’t talk or only says a couple of words. Don’t feel like you haven’t been there for your child. We are all doing the very best we can. Raising children is a lifelong commitment and there will be many opportunities for your parenting gifts to shine. One thing that is for sure is that no one can love your baby like you can. Got a half Korean baby on the way, I know as much Korean as a baby, and really want to be able to speak to them in just or mostly Korean, we are in an English speaking country so it's going to be harder to teach them their other native language, I'll try my best tho, idk how imma do it, but I really don't want them to lose touch with their other language, it's just as important

In summary TIPS FOR BUILDING LANGUAGE. -TYPES OF TALK A - Narrate everything that you do (self talk) B - Describe what they are doing (parallel talk) - LABELLING - Label what things are, Use proper name for things and do it every time. Example: MILK ( WRONG = "want it ?"- RIGHT = "want MILK ?") - LIGHTS (easy activity) Show your child the on and off light switch, then allow them to flip it , on and off , magic light powers. NARRATE how the lights go - "On" AND "Off". They will pick it up so quick. Magic words. - simple way to teach first words for a baby who hasn't started talking yet. Use this as a game when they throw tantrums! Distract / change focus. Quick easy and almost always works. - MODEL You model language for them.. you give them their words, by saying it yourself. They cant know it if they havent heard it. Use new words, be more descriptive, make sounds. Your baby wont judge you XD Warning: Frustration = BAD news. biggest cause of toddler frustration/TANTRUMS .. when they cant communicate what they want to communicate. Teaching them to speak = less frustration and tantrums. - LISTEN Listen! Find balance between talking and listening. Teaches them turn taking in conversations. Shows that you care about what they say. (TRY - Repeating their words and sounds back to them , it shows you listen) Dont interrupt! give them time , let them keep trying. (TRY - Pause at the end of a sentence, let them fill in the blank/ last word. Using Common phrases or songs are best to use for this. TRY- Extend what they say by 1 word. Expand foundation of single words eg- "Ball" to "BIG ball" Rephrase their mistakes and say it correctly. (Correcting shouldn't be done often though and Avoid it completely if the child seems discouraged) " Wash the bubbles" becomes "wash with the bubbles" / "me help" becomes "I help" -READING READ with your child. Builds listening skills, memory , vocabulary. Teaches them to identify the concept of print for future reading skills. (Exposes them to different words that you dont use normally. Like NEUTRON.) -SIGNING ? YES they will pick it up , you can also learn by teaching them. Gives them MORE options for COMMUNICATION. - NB! REPEAT , REPEAT , WAIT Repeat yourself TWICE, and then wait. ALWAYS expect a response once they know a word and always let them try. " Apple .. Apple .. (pause for them to repeat )" - EXPECTATIONS Be consistent. Choose ONE way you want to respond to something - then stick to it. They will learn what actions cause WHAT reactions. (Cause and result.) IF YOU ARE CONSISTENT with them , they will become CONSISTENT with you. *Monkey see monkey do* Consistency = safety. The same as a routine, and when baby feels safe they feel happy.

Ahh, yes! We feel ya Mama! That is definitely where we started when we began activities at the sink. I got used to just putting a large bath towel down on the floor while he was learning to keep the water in the sink. It's been months and months and now he's pretty reliable with keeping the water in the sink but it definitely takes time and practice! Even though the mess can be hard, I just try to remind myself that everything is a learning opportunity! Sending hugs your way! 🥰

HI, this was really helpful information for me! My baby girl is about to turn 6 months and she can babble and scream and make different noises but she doesnt say any consonants yet. So when we were at the dr.s appointment for her 6 months and the dr asked about if she was saying any consonants, we said no and it had me a little worried. Everything else she seems to have been more advanced at but watching this video gave me a lot of ideas on how to help her learn more words. I have done all of these things innately with my children all five of them. And only my two introvert children spoke very late. I think it has something to do with their personality and being a bit more shy and easily content they would rather hear everyone else talk then bother to talk themselves they prefer sign language over verbal speech until over 3 years old when we have to ask them to stop using sign language so that they can finally start talking more. Every child is different and developmentally this is still very acceptable. My children all started reading at age four or five over a hundred words and they get A's in school.

My two year old just stares at me when I talk but she won’t say a word. She doesn’t socialize with other little kids but not by choice, I don’t know any moms with a son/daughter the same age as mine. And she doesn’t even try to talk. She loves books but by herself, as soon as I step in and start reading them for her she leaves, same with drawing and other sensory play. She doesn’t even say 20 words yet and as a new mom I am so worried, her pediatrician discarded any possibility of autism or anything similar and told me that she simply needs to socialize more. But relative’s comments get to me, they don’t do it with bad intentions, but as a new mom every “wow she doesn’t talk yet, mine talked since X age” kind of make me feel bad, as if I’m not doing a good job. Please somebody have any advice. And sorry for the very long paragraph 😅

Hey Carnahans Family! I'm reaching out as a confused and lost mother, if you guys can make a video on how you discipline your 18 month old boy. I have a 18 month old little one and I'm trying to figure out the best strategy to go about it when he does something he isn't suppose to or dont listen me the first three times. I don't wanna hit him since I fear he will just react with violence and won't express his feelings correctly. He doesn't talk much and only says very few words (we're a bilingual family). Hey mama! Discipline can be so hard at this age because of the language barrier and their ability to appropriately express their feelings! We absolutely agree that hitting is not the answer! We do plan on making a video around discipline but in the mean time, let me get you a few ideas! 1) Model! Just like we spoke about in the video - modeling the correct response is huge! For example, you might ask him to pick up his toys and he refuses. Then come over and show him "Mama asked you to pick up your toys, this is what I want you to do. Pick up the toys like this! Mama is doing such a great job picking up toys! Yay! Clap for Mama! Now you try! Yay!" Modeling followed by positive reinforcement works wonders! 2) Offer 2 choices that are both in your favor. Again, you might ask him to pick up his toys, he does not comply so you can calmly go over to him, get his attention so he is looking at you and say "It is time to clean up your toys, do you want to clean up balls or blocks first" or "It's time to clean up your toys, do you want to put the toys in the blue basket or on the shelf?" Offering two choices helps our toddlers feel like they have some choice and power which they crave at this age but both options satisfy you! You might also find some more answers, especially on setting expectations in our most recent potty training video! Quick reference: Narrate w/ self-talk: Describe what you're doing. "Daddy is putting the ball in the basket" Narrate w/ parallel talk: Describe what the baby is doing. "Theo is picking up the book!" Label: identify objects you and your baby are interacting with. Instead of "Do you want it?" say "Do you want the milk?" Model: repeat a phrase slowly so they can hear how to say something Listen: give the baby space to speak so they can learn turn-taking. Repeat what they say, and say things like "Tell me more" Pause: give the baby space to fill in phrases that they have heard many times (more advanced strategy) Extend: add 1 more word to the phrases. 0 -> 1: "" -> "Ball". 1 -> 2: "Ball" -> "Big ball". Rephrase (use sparingly): repeat what they said in a more grammatically correct way Read: take time to read with your baby throughout the day; repeat the same books to help them learn the words and concepts; make it more interactive Sign: repeat signs often and in context, accompanied by the corresponding words Expect: have the mindset that they will be able to speak

My baby now 17 months and he is already sing along his favourite song wheel's on the bus and also its so funny when he start to counting 123 and than jump to said w and also when he watch just the logo of cocomelon on our TV he will run to us and said mummy mummy cocomeyon ohhhh it's so cute, also my baby is dual language I talk Indonesian to him and his daddy talk English and he has no problems with that. I'm so proud parents ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for these tips. I have an 18 month old who says around 10 words. I have been worried because my pediatrician said he should be saying 20 at least. I feel so guilty because I haven’t been talking as much as I should to him. My mom died unexpectedly when he was 7 mo old, she was only 48 years old and it was very very traumatic for our family. I was already dealing with PPD and add grief into it. I wasn’t doing well. I’m trying to make up for it now.

I’m 30 weeks with my son. I have seen my nieces and nephews with so many delays and although that’s how their families are raising them, for my own babies I want them to be able to communicate with me and those around them. This video was so helpful!!

I think in the end whether kids are “delayed” or not they will still be the same in the end just cause someone’s kid is delayed doesn’t mean the parents have done anything wrong

Please please I need your encouragements and your advices, My baby boy is 2 years and 4 months old and he’s not talking yet , He knows only 2 words !!!! I didn't realize he was neurodivergent until I saw your latest video. Our daughter has a rare bone marrow disease and was finally lucky enough to have a baby. He was born two and a half months early and had to be resuscitated at Birth and had a great one pvl. He had some weakness, but we overcame that and is very intelligent at 2, but I also wonder if he might be on the Spectrum.
