The Carnatic music world is divided over music maestro TM Krishna winning Sangita Kalanidhi award. Eminent guests on the show - The South Indian, dive into the real cause behind this divide. Vedic scholar Sri Dushyanth Sridhar said that there is a muti-layered explaination to this. He said that nobody is against the award given to any individual. But the question is on the veracity and the qualifications required for such an award. He said that in the last 10 years T M Krishna has not performed in the academy at all and hence on what eligibility did he get the award. Musician & musicologist teacher Dr. Vijayalakshmi Subramanian said that T M Krishna is a fabulous musician, extremely talented with a wonderful voice. And with such fame comes a lot of responsibility. She added that he has been in a position of influencing so many youngsters and so its very important to know what he is saying.

Sudha, I used to sit next to Bismillah ji, and no one can question his reverence and bhakti for Lord Viswanatha. Several things that Dushyant Sridhar mentioned, I wholeheartedly agree with and in fact I had thought of the same myself and was glad that he also highlighted… First, one doesn’t need to denigrate a person or a group of people to highlight the positives of another. This is especially true if that person being denigrated is deceased, and not here to defend themselves. One cannot crap in a place where he or others eat - this is just a metaphor. In a place like the stage for Carnatic Music, songs about Periyar and Rama cannot coexist.

TM KRISHNA is undoubtedly an accomplished and erudite vocalist about whom none of his detractors have any thing adverse to say about his music credentials. His singing is devotional, soulful and mesmerising and he praises the Lord and his avatars with all reverence like any other musician. Awards are given on the basis of the merit of a Person's excellence in his field and not based on his personal views which may be anti traditional . Many of the music stalwarts had a nasty , tarnished and sullied personal morality in their lifetime and their personal integrity is debatable . Yet they were honoured ! The opposition is only to Krishna's modern views against conventional Carnatic heritage and customs, and its Brahminical mode of adherence to age old tradition.. Unlike the other musicians who have become famous because of their talents only , TMK stands as an intellectual colossus with an analytical mind to study the dynamics of Carnatics music. Hence he has been awarded the prestigious Magsaysay Award. His rational view about the Mridhangam having cow skin with leather straps, and his views about the legendary MS having been born in a Dasi family of non Brahmins are true and factual. These are irritating data to the Gomatha and Hindutva fanatics. However a large section of music lovers are behind TM KRISHNA . If Carnatic Music is so sacrosanct why are they bothered about criticism against it ?

As musician TMK, beyond doubt excellent trained classical musician, who had privilege to learn from great masters. The issue is that since last 10-15 years, he started believing that he has become composer and reached to the level beyond Music of Trinity Krithis. The notes written by Beethoven music is always called “ Beethoven Music” , western classical musicians spend their life to perform them. Individual performer don’t have freedom to change the emotion of original composer , just because it is old tradition and some social tradition of the time. Just to quote Dr. M Balamurali Krishna had written krithis in 72 mela kartha ragas and rendered in concerts. But while rendering Trinity krithis, he rendered them as per traditional books. Probably TMK should write few krithis and try out, instead doing tinkering work of automobile garage. He can popularize his style as “ TMK gharana” as in Hindustani Gharana style .

I want to ask one thing to Mr Murali....Is Madras Music Academy owned by him, just because he is holding the post of president of the academy? What I see on display (sadly) is Brahmin self doubt and defensiveness. The community has been so culturally battered and diminished from the time of the country's colonisation that they have come to believe that they are now responsible for uplifting all of humanity because of the ( imagined) sins of their forefathers !! And we have early Christian missionaries to thank (er blame) for this .. The irony is that TM Krishna would not be the great singer he is today were he not born into a Brahmin family. He is the beneficiary of a lineage that transmits it's acquired learning to those with the requisite abilities. Such intellectual and artistic treasures gained over time through discipline and dedication (of the mind and spirit) are not for everyone. And why should they be ?? But thanks to modern secular ideas we have come to believe that the playing field should be levelled regardless of desire, ability or even need. The case of TM Krishna trying to teach carnatic music to children of the fishing community is one of both misplaced enthusiasm and cultural ignorance. And if it is possible for Hindus in general and Brahmins in particular to level criticism at their own people and traditions it is only because they are flowing streams in the ocean of sanatana dharma that allows for pluralistic thinking and dissent within its multiple folds. Before anything I would like to request the Academy to release all the names applied to get this award this year. Are both Sow. Ranjani and Sow. Gayathri also two candidates applied this to the academy. Just because they did not get this year they can always get it later. Both sisters (or my daughters) to express their ways in way that the society will accept and as educated people both must honor the process and the candidacy. The musician TMKrishna is acting as directed by some one may be for some petty benefit. Better ignore this misfit and don't make him great by talking about him. He is not worthy of consideration as an artist of repute. Honouring such an unworthy person the Music Academy has degraded their stature may also be as a favour to somebody. Boycotting such institutions by those who really respect the great art is the fitting concern that can be expressed. Carnatic music lovers should boycott TMKrishnas concerts as well as a protest against his unworthy behaviour. Jai Sri ram

It could have been much better with greater preparation by the host who seemed to think she is Arnab Goswami. No respect and a lot of bias. Hasn't done any research on Music Academy. Her knowledge of the 3 saints is zero. On the whole it was a very hollow debate, and inconclusive

What a stupid anchor dramatically speaking and interjecting without logic! Bismillah khan singing Ram bhajans is completely different from the point Dushyant Sridhar was trying to make on EV Ramasamy. And when she got caught by Dushyant Sridhar who explained his point again, she is shamelessly again giving example of MS Subbulakshmi singing carols. The anchor should be more intelligent enough to be given such a platform. Just speaking good English is not enough!
