He tried to set himself apart from the other Brahmin musicians thinking that this would get him some mileage in the largely Dravidian state, where this stance gets encouraged. This has backfired badly and he is now neither here nor there. In reality, there is or was never any Brahmin or non Brahmin issue within Carnatic music. Just like IPL, anyone who performs well gets plaudits and a following. It so happens that this artform has a large number of compositions in Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada AND Tamil, therefore does not lend itself well to a narrative that wants to showcase ONLY Tamil. In any case, the patronage within Tamil Nadu is not what the artform thrives on anymore. Carnatic music is now practiced worldwide and such concocted issues matter less with each passing day. Carnatic music is an art form that is vilified and made fun of by the general public and it is true that only one community has preserved it mainly- the tambrahm community.
