The description given in the video in only a partial account of facts. Carnaval celebrations in olden days is completely different from what is potraied nowadays. The the villages of Salcete was totally dominated by Kell Tiatrs, kind of folk plays, music and songs. Each complete show of kell-tiatr consisting of 3 parts and each of about one hour duration and had a complete story enacted by using clever dialogues, songs and catchy music. There was no need of any stage but approximately a 8m by 8m plane field. Spectators were gathering all around the actors keeping enough space for the participants to perform their acting. For some convenient reasons female actors consisted of male dressed as ladies in colourful clothes. The Kell Tiatr troupees went from village to village at the sound of blarring brass band music and drums for three days of carnaval. Benaulim village was famous for exceptional Kell Tiatr writers, producers and actors. In addition there were balls, dances and singing sessions. Interward duels between youth groups fighting with "cocotes" small cylindrical packets of colourful papers filled with soft powdered mud being thrown at each other

You guys are completely wrong. "Carnival" is a Catholic festival not a pagan one and since Latin is the language of the church the name is a description of its religious significance - the "taking away of flesh" (carne levare) which marked the beginning of Lent. It's actually Carnevale - derived from the Latin carnis (carne meaning meat) and "levare" (meaning to remove). So "carnevale" means literally "meat removed". The reason for this name is because it is celebrated on the last day before Lent. During Lent Catholics are supposed to abstain from meat as part of their 40 day fast as well as perform acts of penance, and charity. There is NO corresponding pagan festival!!!
