My husband and I went on a cruise to San Juan in Feb of 2022. Next time try Restaurante Raíces. It’s not to far of a walk down from the port and the Mofongo is so good!!!

🥄 Here are some food suggestions for you from a local who knows Old San Juan pretty well. I’m a former Food Writer and I love good eats! In case you’ve never been to Puerto Rico, it’s considered customary and totally normal to wish your fellow diners an enjoyable meal upon entering and exiting a restaurant. People will say it to you too. This is done by politely saying the phrase “Buen Provecho” (Bwayne pro vaycho), you can also say it among yourselves as a “Toast.” This phrase means “Enjoy!” I’ve included how to pronounce restaurant names and menu items too. P.S. Puerto Rican Food is never spicy, unless you add “Pique” (pee-kay) aka Hot Sauce to it! 🇵🇷 Old San Juan Eats; 🌴 Cafe Manolin - (man o lean) 251 Calle San Justo. Bountiful Puerto Rican Food 🥘, Great early AM Breakfast but lunch is The Star! Steak Mofongo, Shrimp Mofongo 🍤, Chicken, Sancocho Soup 🍲 , Rice & Beans, Daily Specials - order a Pastelón if it’s available - it’s similar to a meat lasagna but plantains are used instead of lasagna noodles. Cool off with a Cold Medalla Beer 🍺 though they have a super strong air-conditioning system in this 1950’s Diner Setting. Try any of their cakes on display with a Café con Leche ☕️! Popular place with locals. Best value in town. Always busy, for good reason. Closes at 3:30PM. 🌴 La Madre - (lah mah drey) 351 Calle San Francisco 🇵🇷 🧡🇲🇽 Puerto Rican/Mexican. Baja Fish Tacos, Pork Belly Tacos 🌮 , Santa Fe Salad. Inventive drinks 🍸 . Eat outside or in. Small place. Beach-y retro interior. Great friendly and very welcoming staff. Kitchen can sometimes be slow, order some tortilla chips. Chic hip with-it spot but portion size could improve. Best at lunchtime. 🌴 El Jibarito- (hee bah ree toe) 280 Calle Sol Tasty Puerto Rican Food, 🐙 Octopus Salad, “Christmas Dinner” plate, Empanadas, Carne Guisada 🥩 , Alcappurias, Piña Colada, Rum Punch 🍷 , Flan 🍮 . Charming interior that replicates Old San Juan’s beautifully colored homes. Family-run for decades. Nothing is overly spiced. Open Lunch - Dinner. 🌴 Perilo Pizza Rustica - (pay ree low) 207 Calle Tanca Delicious Pizza Pies 🍕 , Veggie Lasagna, Salads 🥗 & Super Sangria. Inviting interior. TV’s at the bar for sports fans ⚾️ but you wouldn’t consider this a “sports bar” at all. Great additional upstairs dining area but the stairs are very steep. Hip spot. Great for groups. Energetic atmosphere. Great service. Open Lunch-Dinner. 🌴 Puerto Criollo - (p’ware toe cree o yo) 360 Calle Tetuán. Authentic Puerto Rican Food, Many types of Mofongo 🍖 🍤 🐖, Fried Red Snapper 🐟 a popular dish that arrives whole and you’ll have to de-bone it yourself, Stuffed Avocados 🥑 , Frituras (Fried Puerto Rican Appetizers - ask for MayoKetchup) it’s a Puerto Rican thing), Salads 🥗 Chops. Big portions. Gaining in popularity, but not yet “discovered”. Closed Mondays. 🌴 Juanes Restaurant - (who whan ace) 201b Calle Tetuán Puerto Rican Food. Very casual. Noted for all their menu offering all types of Mofongo, Fried Snapper 🐟 , Great Empanadas, Mampssteo Rice, Chicken 🍖 Tostones, Sweet Plantains 🍌 and Piña Colada’s made with four types of rum! Bartenders are lauded here. Many tropical drinks. Popular with groups. Reasonably priced. Open 12PM-7PM. Beloved by its customers. Closed Sunday’s. 🌴 Cafeteria Mallorca - (my-your-cah) 300 Calle San Francisco Old School diner-like restaurant known for it’s Mallorca sweet rolls, best grilled with melted butter and cheese 🧀 and sprinkled with powdered sugar, some prefer it with Eggs and Ham 🍳 . Order one with a Café con Leche ☕️! Busiest during breakfast hours. Less busy after 12 noon. Worth the wait. Nice staff. It’s a legendary old time beloved spot that recently reopened. . Open until 5:30PM. P.S. If they have hot quesito pastries available, definitely try them! 🌴 El Meson Sandwiches- (el may sewn) Corner of Calle San Francisco and Calle San Jose in the Plaza de Armas Square. Affordable Fast Food chain for healthy-ish counter service foods. Breakfast 🍳 served all day long including Mallorca’s, Pancakes 🥞 , Omelette Sandwiches 🥪 on delicious flattened crusty bread , French Fries, Oatmeal, Cream of Cornmeal, Muffins. Best at lunchtime. Strong coffee ☕️ ! Cold Soda’s! Super clean. Nice additional upstairs seating area for a quiet bite. Open very early until 6PM, sometimes later. 🍸 Check out the inexpensive dive-y graffiti-filled rock and roll loving bar called “El Batey” (el ba taye) for a Cuba 🇨🇺 Libre or a freezing cold cab of Medalla (meh dye ah) Beer 🍺 , the local Puerto Rican Beer. They have a drink called “The House Couple” that consists of a can of cold Medalla (meh dye ah) beer and Aged Rum. El Batey has its charm and has been around forever. It has a pool table and jukebox too, featuring lots of rock and roll records. Surprisingly, it’s often quiet and very relaxing during the day! Lots of locals here who previously lived in the contiguous United States. They make great non-alcohol “Mocktails” too. It’s very close to the historic Hotel El Covento, a former convent! 🤔 If you need anything from the Supermarket, head to “SuperMax” in Plaza de Armas. Best place to buy Puerto Rican Coffee which is a great souvenir, the Yaocono brand is tops.(Buy their Instant Coffee to make an easy and fast Café con Leche at home- just add 2 or 3 teaspoons to a mug of warm milk) Take home local food favorites like “Creama de Maiz”, a Cornmeal Breakfast Porridge 🌽 . SuperMax sells wine and beer (Medalla is the beer of Puerto Rico), Rum (try the smooth “Bacardi Gold”) and all kinds of Puerto Rican snack foods like Plaintain Chips, Roasted Peanuts in a shell 🥜 , Crackers, Cookies and Baked Goods 🥐 that you can only find in Puerto Rico! 💃🏾 💃🏾💃🏾 🕺🏿 🕺🏿 🕺🏿
