Every cruise with Carnival I've brought a portable router. It's battery operated and fits in my pocket. I have it setup to connect to the WiFi and then rebroadcast a private SSID that we then connect all our devices to. The ships WiFi sees it as one device so you don't need to pay for multiple devices. They also use DNS filtering so this allows to set your own DNS servers. A lot of people try and use VPNs and while this sometimes works the speed of the connection actually can get overloaded by the overhead of the VPN connection. A much better way is to use a proxy server as you don't have the overhead and all the ship sees is you accessing a single unassuming IP address. I figured they would start cracking down on Starlink as it became more prevalent. I know they can be sticklers with scanners or two way radios. I've always had to take them apart and hide them with my camera gear.

Those who cruise regularly know that there are gray areas with tech and that the worst that can happen is that you bring along whatever it is you are hoping to utilize and hope that it's not confiscated prior to boarding. You're pretty sure it's restricted but you figure, hey, why not give it a go since it's a restricted item, not an illegal one. If they take it they'll just return it at the end of your cruise. No biggie. I personally would have have held off on posting a video on using the Mini until after I had sailed. Someone who follows you ratted you out because there's always someone who loves to spoil someone else's good time.

One reason Carnival doesn't want non-Carnival supplied internet is that you can compare prices of onboard shops with real world prices while at sea. On carnival's internet many retail outlets are blocked on purpose, and don't try taking pictures of prices especially liquor, jewelry and watches

I wonder if Carnival's behavior violates FCC Order 98-273 or the FCC Satellite Rule (which applies to CCL since they have incorporated in the US and operate inside of US seaways), where this law states that landlords cannot ban satellite dishes from a rental property. As long as the satellite dish is 40 inches or smaller in diameter, it must be allowed on the property in private rented space when "installed by a professional". The cruise ship cabin should be considered as a "rental property", as you are renting a cabin (just like on an AMTRAK train you can "rent" a bedroom or roomette versus just paying for a seat for carriage). CCL's "taking" of the StarLink device violates constitutional rights, since CCL can not demonstrate any danger to passengers or the ship by having and using such a legal device on board. Understandably, weapons such as guns are prohibited (eventhough it is protected under the US Second Amendment), but guns can be a safety issue. The current Carnival Cruise Line Prohibited Items, Exemptions and Other Considerations has the following items listed: Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), communication scanners, wideband receivers, satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers, Satellite dish, routers and other internet related equipment, which I would think violate several FCC regulations, especially about amateur radio equipment.

I think no, they shouldn’t allow you to use it in port. Because like any other prohibited items brought on board, you don’t get it back until the end of the sailing. Logistically, it would be untenable if every guest could request prohibited items each time they arrived at a port, and then had to have it re-confiscated when they re-boarded. Can you imagine? That would be a nightmare to manage at scale.

I was on the Miracle two week before you, granted we went to Alaska, but with the premium package we got 75-100mbits the entire time. I even has a firestick attached to our TV and had 24 access to our local channel using KZbin tv.

I agree. Starlink mini itself is an amazing piece of kit and will be replacing my cellular hotspot for use when NOT on a cruise! It's small enough to fit into an under the seat backpack of an airplane with all accessories and 4 batteries that can power it for nearly 24 hours.

But at sea you still have the connection routed through the ships communications link. The cruise line is getting a piece of the action albeit at a much lower rate. If any data is attached to that it would be interesting to know what the down and up data rates are - probably throttled and capped.

Wifi congestion is a thing. If several 1000 people on a ship brought their own wifi kit that'll result in impaired wireless network performance so I'm surprised they don't restrict wifi travel routers too. The mini has a wireless AP built in so would fall under that too.

I just saw your other video about the Starlink Mini dish working from your room and thought that was awesome. Answered sooo many questions I had as I thought there was no reason I can't do that as well. The internet on NCL was much more expensive than Carnival even with less days, and it is straight up highway robbery. I think had you not made and uploaded a video you might have gone undetected. Possibly also not broadcast the SSID of the wifi network. I only recently purchased a Starlink dish so I do not have experience with the different settings and options the software has. This might open the eyes of all the cruise lines out there and have them update their TOS to strictly enforce no use of your own internet to protect their bottom lines.

@@meanderingmouse Thats good to know, from what I saw on the website I couldn't find anywhere stating that their internet was powered by Starlink. I have a cruise coming up this Mardi Gras on the Wish and after seeing your video ordered a mini to go with my standard dish. Paying for the boat internet for a week and having the cost be three times higher than my home monthly fiber internet is so painful. My job pretty much requires me to be available no matter where I am so getting a mini was always going to happen, but this just solidified that purchase for me.

I mean right above the now corrected "satellite dish" prohibition, it literally says "Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), communication scanners, wideband receivers, satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers. Next year T-Mobile is bringing texting to all phones. Not just iPhone. By 2025, they are expected to have calling and data as well. Do you think these changes will actually force carnival to update or will they stay in the past for a while? Do you think pricing will reflect the lack of WiFi plans being purchased?

This is funny. Years ago i used to bring a bgan terminal and an iridium phone so i could work from their ships. Back when they charged by the minute for internet. Id use ship intenet when i needed 'fast' connections, but the bgan charged by the bit so i could stay online and messaging cheap. Ever since they started with the trip based plans their Internet speed sucks cuz everyone is on it all day long its impossible to work from the ship anymore.

Kind of hard to use it on the balcony. Line of sight is required and at the correct angle. What If the ship turns? You'd have to continually adjust.

Please respond to my question if you can. The Cruise Lines are worried about losing revenue for their limited and extremely expensive internet service. They are one of the last types of businesses that even charge for Wi-Fi. Think about it. Where else today do you have to pay for basic Wi-Fi access ....... hotels, doctor's office, stores, fast food, shopping centers, etc. How did they catch you ? Did you use it out in the open where they saw it ? If you had kept it hidden, would they have been able to find the source / you ?

I'm going to play devil's advocate - the balcony use is probably their real problem. Cruise lines are extremely paranoid about fire. I know Royal Caribbean bans both power strips and extension cords (I had mine confiscated), and also has rules about leaving balcony doors open as well as running cords through them. All to do with fire. There's no way to know, but if you only did the first half of the video from the pool deck you might not have gotten in any trouble.
