I own property in western NC that under normal circumstances does not have internet or even cellular coverage available. After hurricane Helene came through, internet and cell coverage was lost to a large area of western NC. A neighbor has starlink and was able to communicate to those outside the region that they were safe. To me, starlink by itself is a game changer. @@PAMALAsCHARIS just think the higher the number of the "down" which means download, the faster you can download information from the internet (websites, files, games, anything really). Same goes for up, which means upload, (think uploading a KZbin video for instance, or sending an email with attachments) although it is generally accepted to be much slower than down because most people hardly ever upload anything. Mbps is what I should be using when talking about speeds, it means megabits per second, think of it as a measurement of internet speed like miles per hour in a car. The more, the better. It allows us to download more mbs and gbs, which mean megabytes and gigabytes, lastly, think of these as just units of data measurement like gallons for liquids. 1024mb =1gb A standard iPhone photo can be about 2 mb, while some video games can exceed 50gb for example. Connection between phone and starlink was 590mbps, starlink to internet 30mbps. Overall not happy with the download speed but got it because of the outages for a backup. Also I bought it from best buy so I did not get the 30 day free trial I had to pay up front to start the service. When you pause the service it works until the end of the billing cycle and then doesn't renew for the following month.

Because there are no satellites above the sea.
@GarySBCA2 ай бұрын
@@MrPeterFranc There are many competing options on land keeping the price lower. Also there are technical reasons… Before the data can get to your receiver it first needs to get to the satellite. Over land this is easy; it goes up and it comes back down. In the middle of the ocean the data is first uplinked from land as usual but then has to be relayed laterally possibly through several other satellites before reaching the user. This ties up more satellite bandwidth. There may be other reasons such as satellite coverage being optimized over land areas where there are more users.

How well does Starlink work during heavy rain or snow?
@HotshotTek2 ай бұрын
I don’t live in an area where it rains a lot, but based on what others I’ve spoken to have said, it does take a slight hit in performance. However, even on very overcast days, they mentioned that it still performs perfectly fine.

Ugh, the ONLY test I hoped you’ll do wasn’t done. How does it perform in massive cloud cover and rain?
@PointsOnlyАй бұрын
@1lllllllll1 Probably the same way as my satellite TV, crappy. Heavy rain it always cuts out. Normal clouds don't seem to affect it, though.

So if mini is preferred when going traveling overland adventures how is your subscription handled month to month? Buy the hardware and have subscription temp on then off?
@renatolamardo53238 күн бұрын
Great video, thanks for the content. I have a question. I'll be traveling for a few months, but I'll always be staying at a residence or Airbnb. In this case, since I don't need to use the internet while on the road, can I use the residential plan?

I use ATT fiber with about 3 gig download. This would be cool for my boat though. What about gaming??

Did you test your Internet speed performance while driving using a $120 home subscription? If yes, I'm curious how far away from your home base you could travel before you would expect reception/performance problems?

I find my TMHI is fine. Had it now for around 2.5 years at $50/month. I still have the Arcadyn black box but it works fine. I’d only use Starlink if I’m consistently where there’s no cell internet access. If they drop the monthly charge, I’d consider it, but where it is now, it’s really not worth it. The mini should really have been cheaper than the standard (or part of the plan price considering my TMHI router is free with the plan). For emergency situations in areas without internet, iPhone 14 and up come with free satellite text to emergency services.

Can Starlink be permanently attached to the top of a vehicle?
@echoplexSE2 күн бұрын
it can be, there's a mount designed for mounting permanently to something like an RV. I'm not sure you'd want to do that to your car though

I have access to ~4.5mbps down. It's not noticeable but when watching someone live at a higher bitrate. If you're streaming to a site that accepts av1, I'd experiment with seeking the lowest bitrate for the best quality you can get out of your PC using that. Most content is fine below 1Mbps at FHD, any frame rate.

Will this work from the inside of the vehicle, through the glass. If it works in motion, why do you need to set it up and align it to begin with? Do you need to align it every time you power it on? I am hoping to mount it inside my truck and mount it to the moon roof via suction cups. this way i don't have to run any wires outside the vehicle through a window. Thanks for you video.
