The 8 day cruise on the Horizon was amazing. I really enjoyed Mike the CD. Our cruise didn't have nearly as much crowding as yours. We cruised June 1-9. I'm assuming most rooms were double occupancy because my family could easily navigate through the lido and other areas. I ate omelets almost every morning and never had to wait more than 5 minutes. I also went to the lido around 7am and 9 am most days. I agree the constant upsell in the spa is annoying!!! The Havana area was really nice, however it wasn't for us. We booked 2 rooms in the Havana area (double occupancy), but next time we'll stick with a good ole balcony... we preferred to be with all the action!!! The elevators worked great once people learned to work them properly, therefore it was less crowding. Great review as always!

Very enjoyable vlog as always. I'm really glad you're not a cruise snob. There are some vloggers that will not go on Carnival because I guess if it's more affordable to some people then it's not a good product and I think that's very sad. I enjoy cruising all Cruise Lines and I can see that you do too. There are pros and cons on every Cruise Line and every cruise ship. Nothing is perfect. But I don't see how anyone can have a bad time on any ship.
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! Every cruise line has things that it does better than all the others, and every one has some room for improvement. I've enjoyed every cruise I've ever been on, even the one on MSC Seaside which was (all things considered) my least favorite cruise of all. Loved their gelato, which was offered to "Aurea" guests... as was a massage in their spa. Carnival is an outstanding value... offering the biggest bang for the buck... which is why I've done more Carnival cruises than any other line. But I also enjoy the occasional splurge on a more luxurious cruise such as in The Haven on NCL or any cruise on Viking Ocean Cruises. With the new Excel suites on Carnival Mardi Gras having private Jacuzzis on the balcony, it looks like Carnival has truly figured out what it would take to keep me from cruising in The Haven! I'm more excited about Mardi Gras than I've been about a new ship in quite a few years.

it really depends on the time of year. Summer-time and vacation time cruises will have more occupants per room than cruises during the typical school months. So I wouldn't write off the large ships, but you may want to sail them when kids are in school.

My wife and I have been cruising since 2003. We take one to two cruises per year. We take cruises after Labor Day because the cruise ships are less crowded. Most people have completed their vacations by this point and are returning to work , school or their normal routines. After 7:00pm the Havana Pool area is opened to all cruisers until 12:00am. Yes, if you were sailing in early December, you probably had closer to 4,000 on the ship. Two people per cabin. Mine was a summer sailing, and there were nearly 5,000 people on the ship. Lots of cabins with 3 or 4 people in them, since kids were off school and parents brought them along.

Yes, for those of us that are within driving distance of Southern California, the Carnival Panorama will be a fantastic opportunity to sail on one of the newest, most state-of-the-art ships without having to fly to Florida. I suspect that Southern Californians will fall in love with this ship and sail on it multiple times in the coming years. It's really going to raise the bar high for any other cruise lines that want to appeal to Southern California cruisers. The only ship that sometimes visits Southern California that will even be in the same league as the Carnival Panorama is the Norwegian Bliss... but it only cruises out of California a few weeks of the year.

You should go on one once! It’s really fun and in my opinion, you can have fun and you can just chill. In my opinion, to really have a good cruise, you should get an ocean view or anything above it because if you don’t, you’re just gonna be in a closed area with no natural light coming in! Of course you’d have to be mindful of the things that aren’t so good about cruises, but I think you’d still have fun either way.

I don’t know that comparing two ships would be fair but just different things in general such as serenity vs solarium, lido buffet vs windjammer cafe, carnival’s atrium vs the Royal promenade. Carnival’s theory on room service vs Royal as well as their differences in laundry and ironing. There are a lot of things I love about carnival as the same with Royal. My kids are adults and one is a school teacher and they talked us into the Carnival Horizon with the Havana Cabana room (5th floor). August 2020 . We have to go in the summer prior to my kid returning to teach. I am afraid that the crowds would be a problem especially kids. It’s good to know that the Havana area isn’t crowded. It holds 3960 guests the crew works below decks This shows crowding during peak times for breakfast, lunch etc.
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
That's a common mis-perception: that the ship carries only 3960 guests. The truth is that the ship carries 3960 guests IF THERE ARE ONLY TWO GUESTS IN EACH CABIN. However, many of the cabins are set up for a third and fourth guest, and over the summer and during holidays there are quite often about a thousand additional guests aboard because of all the people in the third and fourth beds. Plus, an additional 1450 crew members, and they don't all work below decks. Some of them are working in passenger areas. So, that's an awful lot of people crammed in to the ship's common areas, such as the buffet restaurant, which has some narrow choke-points which get really crowded at times, as shown in the video.
@robertcalderas46715 жыл бұрын
That makes no sense because the vista was never like this. Very strange
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
It's all just a matter of what time of the year you cruise, and also what time of the day you visit the buffet. If you cruise when school is in session, most of the 3rd and 4th beds in the cabins will be empty. You'll be cruising with close to 3960 passengers. If you cruise during the summer or over a holiday week, a lot more people will bring along their kids in the 3rd and 4th beds... and it's possible to have as many as 5000 passengers onboard. Also, if you go to the buffet at 7 AM on a sea day, most passengers are still in bed. The buffet will be uncrowded. Go back at 10 AM and it will be a zoo.

Hey Jim! We love your reviews, especially how you don't sugarcoat your dislikes. I have a sort of unrelated question.. my wife and I are getting ready to go on our 8th cruise and so far we've been hopping back and forth between cruise lines (Carnival, RCCL, MSC and Norwegian).. are the perks you get for sticking with one cruise line worthwhile in the long run or are they just kind of pointless to consider when planning a cruise? We're in our mid-30's and have been taking 2 cruises a year so we could build up some loyalty pretty quickly (although we are pretty budget conscious so we tend to stick to inside staterooms for the most part.. ignorance is bliss.. lol). Thanks!
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
My advice would be to pick a cruise based on the features of the ship and the itinerary, and not to make a big effort to just stick with one cruise line. The perks you get for loyalty are fairly minor... earlier boarding, and usually some kind of party with free drinks. It's nothing worth going on a bad cruise for! If you end up cruising with one cruise line more than the others and you do build up loyalty points over time... that's great. But pick each cruise based on who offers the best combination of ship features, itinerary, and price.
@EricGeiple5 жыл бұрын
@@JimZim Awesome. We will keep doing what we've been doing then! I just did some more research on Royal Caribbean and you are right.. it's mainly just events (not really interested) and a robe.. if we're staying in an inside cabin on the Majesty of the Seas a robe might take up too much space. lol

I’ve never been on a cruise. What ship is perfect for first timers? I prefer having a relaxing, quiet vacation.
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
For quiet and relaxing, it's hard to beat the Havana area on Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon, or Carnival Panorama. Simply book a Havana cabin rather than a regular cabin, and you'll have full access to that quiet Havana pool area at the back of the ship. Pick a sail date when school is in session for most kids, and you won't find the crowded conditions you saw in this video. For example, I sailed on Carnival Vista in September and had a completely different experience than the crowding I saw on Carnival Horizon in June. If you live closer to Galveston, book Carnival Vista. If you live closer to Los Angeles, book Carnival Panorama. If you live closer to Miami, book Carnival Horizon. If you're affluent after a life of saving well and making good financial decisions, skip Carnival and book a Viking Ocean Cruise instead.

Hi Jim and fellow cruisers !! Question please: we are considering a Mexico cruise on the Horizon and are jazzed that we FINALLY have what appears to be a caliber Carnival ship dedicated to us Californian's. In your video Jim, you mentioned how extra crowded this ship was on a recent summer Caribbean cruise (high season). Do you think we all may experience this type of over-crowded conditions when taking a Mexican cruise (and of course no one can predict things of this nature, but if the ship's design is a cause for this, then that speaks to me !). Note: we plan on staying on an aft-wrap Havana balcony which will help our not feeling the extra crowds, but we also don't want to avoid public decks, other pools, or the dining venues because of excessive crowding. Thank Jim, you are The Best ! Thanks everyone, you too are The Best as you are Jim Zim followers ! Best, Marcia
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcia I'd strictly be guessing about whether there will be the kind of crowding during summer and holidays on the Carnival Panorama as I saw on Carnival Horizon... but my guess is yes. Over summer and holidays, people will bring their kids along with them and cabins that would typically have 2 guests in them in October might have 3 or 4 in July. So, I'd think you'd see the same kind of crowds at peak times. However, my guess is that the type of passengers might be slightly different, and perhaps their behavior might be a little different... so it will be interesting to see what the vibe on the ship is. What I'm talking about is the kinds of things you overhear when you're sitting and enjoying a meal in the buffet, and you're within earshot of several other groups of people at nearby tables... or the kinds of things you overhear in an elevator... or the behaviors you see around the pool... or while waiting in the audience for a show. On Carnival Horizon, in June, those kinds of things were a little less classy than what I had witnessed on some of our other cruises in recent years. Will a west coast crowd on our upcoming cruise in January be different than the southeastern crowd we cruised with in June? I would think so.

How would you compare the crowding on Horizon vs Vista? I don’t remember if you had the same complaints about crowds on the Vista. (Sailing Panorama next year, so I’m curious if it’s specific to Horizon or the class of ship)
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
We didn't experience any crowding on the Vista, because our Vista cruise was in September... when kids were in school. Most people that want to go on a cruise with their kids don't do it in September... they do it in June, July, and August... or Christmas week, or Spring Break. So, in September most cabins have two people in them and in June, July, and August a lot of cabins have three or four people in them. With two people in every cabin, the Vista-class ships carry about 4000 passengers. The week we sailed on Carnival Horizon there were nearly 5,000!

The 3900 figure is the capacity of the ship with two people in each cabin. But during the summer months, and holidays, people tend to bring kids along and many cabins will have three, four, or even five people in them. That's why you will often find, during the summer, 5000 passengers on a ship whose capacity is listed as 3900.

In his previous version, during his voice over, his footage panned a group of white passengers while saying "if you're looking for more affluent trip" and then panned toward black people and began speaking of "cheaper cruise, different type of crowd". I'm sure that wasn't his intent, it was just how the voice over matched up with the footage. I commend him for editing and the other posters who noticed it and had a nice discussion on it. Things can be taken so out of context and that was trap he didn't need.

LOL - your question cracked me up ! 1. The way I go about the wait-period is to savor feeling of anticipation ! 2. Also, viewing the cruise ship deck layout to totally familiarize myself with where everything is so I don't wander around lost and wasting time.... 3. looking at the ship pictures on their website as well as watching as many KZbin video's on the ship and itinery as possible. Getting tidbits from other cruise takers and/or cruise channels like Jimbo's, who have sailed the very ship we're to be taking is great. 4. Also it's fun to view the various cruise ship Excursions, as well as going to (as an example) TripAdvisor and CruiseCritic to read all about the reviews on those Excursions. 5. We also have a spare guest room at home, so another way to pass the time is to start packing "this and that" ahead of time, day by day -- thus when you get down to the final day to pack, you only need to add a few unwrinkled-able items ! Hope this helps and happy travels ! m.

Hey, Jim Great Review I was wondering how Royal Caribbean and Norwegian differ in terms of demographics. I know Carnival is the best for younger adults looking for fun but how would you describe how it differs between RC and Norwegian. Thanks!
@monkeyb18205 жыл бұрын
not a big difference. Royal and NCL both put a lot of emphasis on entertainment, various things for family fun (ropes courses, waterslides, etc.). A new NCL ship will have more bells and whistles than an older RC and the vice versa is also true. We and others have found that for a given date and itinerary, NCL tends to have better 'deals' (maybe similar pricing, but the ncl will include choosing some perks like upgraded dining, wifi, etc). IMO, Carnival has some of the best 'free food' of the big lines, next I like O'Sheehans on NCL, and Royal doesn't have anything similar (although Jim's videos may have indicated that Royal is adding a Mexican place on some newer ships, I can't remember exactly...).

Jonathan Thomas you'll see younger crowds and first time crises and budget cruisers on Carnival. More newlywed, couples , younger crowds on NCL Older, family and seasoned cruisers on RCCL. I've been on all 3 lines, have 31 cruises so far. I cruise about 1-2 times a year. I'm 41 male , married with 2 kids . just my opinion .

I always enjoy these videos, always clear and concise with great audio quality. I'm curious why it's always cruises leaving from the US though. If you are that big a fan of cruising why not do a cruise from a different continent?

Our perfect vacation involves going somewhere the weather is warm, and where the water is warm. We're not interested in visiting historical sites, visiting museums, etc. A great vacation to us involves time at a warm beach, playing in warm water. Since we live in California, the easiest places to find something like that are the Mexican Riviera, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Other warm places like Tahiti or Australia or Indonesia would require an uncomfortably long flight.

There was a couple of years where anyone could use the Havana pool area after 10 PM, but eventually Carnival decided it was a bad idea and they started making it exclusive to the Havana guests 24/7.
@bpeeler38155 жыл бұрын
You said you liked the Havana rooms and pool area , 2 questions do they have a room for 5 and can kids go to this pool area to beat the crazy crowds
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
If your youngest child is at least 12 years old, you can book a room in the Havana area. No one under 12 is allowed in Havana cabins. I don't think any of the Havana cabins can sleep five, though. You'd have to book two cabins. For a family of five, you'd probably be much better off, and the kids would be happier, if you booked a "family harbor" cabin. They do have family harbor cabins that can sleep five.

There were about five different things about the original version that bothered me. The truth is, I felt some time pressure and I rushed that video out. I should have taken more time and gotten it right. So, I deleted the original version, fixed the things I didn't like about it, and uploaded the new version which I like a lot better.

This class of ship does have much too Many people per square foot. Even on RC the ships tend to be a bit wider than Carnival and as such they are able to lay out the ships a bit better. They need to do a better job with serenity. Even on RC’s oldest ships, The solarium is layed our much better. I thoroughly enjoyed the solarium on Navigator as it’s partially enclosed.

It's a slightly modified version of a video I posted a few weeks ago.There were about five different things that I wanted to correct or improve in that original video. The more people commented about some of those things, the more it irritated me that I didn't do a better job in making that original version of the video. The truth is that I was feeling a little time pressure, and rushed it. In retrospect, I wish I had taken a little more time to get it right the first time. Yesterday, I found myself with a few free hours and decided to fix the video. I've deleted the old version and posted my new improved version... which I'm much more happy with.

Don’t go on this ship. It’s overcrowded and for what you get overpriced. The only good things were the extras you have to pay for. Go on a classier cruise line. I thought it being new would make it great. I thought wrong.
@marciasanguinetti39005 жыл бұрын
Hi ! Can you elaborate on which lines you would recommend ? My husband and I have only cruised on Princess, HAL and Celebrity -- in total over 20 cruises equally split between the 3 lines. The reason we want to try Carnival is that they go out of LA which is very convenient for us, it is a new ship which should be nice, plus we have never experienced a Water Slide at Sea -- which we know we will enjoy being kids at heart as well as water-babies !!! We have thought about going on NCL as they are a West Coast presence and their water parks look amazing too - plus they have The Haven which we would try someday if we like them enough to fork over the extra albeit after a 1st try out in a regular balcony room. Thanks for your perspective and additional advise if you wish to expand more. M.

I like some parts of the cruises, but for me, going on a more expensive line would be too much because I just go for a chill break during the summer or an escape from the snow.

Carnival just got rated F's for pollution but yet you defend them. How much is Carnival bankrolling your videos Jim?
@JimZim5 жыл бұрын
A little cynical, are you? FYI, Carnival pays me zero. I pay them to cruise with them. Also, if you do more than just read the headlines about the "F" rating that Carnival got, you'll find that Friends Of The Earth gave Carnival an AUTOMATIC "F" because Carnival admitted to violating the terms of its probation from a 2017 conviction for improper waste disposal. So, the "F" is a little misleading. If you do a little research, you'll find that Carnival actually has exhaust scrubbers installed on most of their ships to prevent air pollution. So, the exhaust from those Carnival ships is actually quite a bit cleaner than a lot of cruise ships in the world. You gotta give credit where credit is due... Carnival spent a lot of money over the last few years to retrofit ships with scrubbers. And, the upcoming Carnival Mardi Gras won't burn bunker fuel at all... it will be powered by clean burning liquefied natural gas. Before you get all outraged about cruise ship pollution, take a look at tanker ships, container cargo ships, fishing vessels, etc. Holy moly, those guys make cruise ships look clean by comparison.
