The amusement park was Saltair, outside Salt Lake City. It was the second incarnation. The original, built in the late 1800s, had burned down in the 1920s. Several years after this movie was made, the one used in the film burned down, and another, far less elaborate, was built to replace it.
@Miniver765
@Miniver765 Жыл бұрын
@Kjt853 You are correct. The version of Saltair in this film was destroyed by fire in 1970. My father was part of the investigation that followed. Arson was suspected. The ruins sat undisturbed for years until a far more bland and uninteresting structure was put up sometime in the 80's.

A real gem. I never heard of Carnival of Souls before it was rereleased in the late 90's. I read a little article in a New York paper but otherwise I was going in totally blind. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was and once I got accustomed to the bizarre acting and awkward dialogue it took on a wonderful otherworldly quality. I don't know how this flew under my notice for so long. I've been watching horror movies since the early 70's and cannot recall even hearing the title. Better late than never.

This was cool 😎. I was born in “63. I remember everything being just like in the movie. The cars ,the clothes, the way people treated each other. Very kind and respectful. Except those young men being pushy about asking you out all the time. Lol. I feel like I have lived in 2 different worlds. I like the modern things. Cell phones, hair styles, clothes, crypto, music. Especially music from the 70/80’s. It’s just a very unusual time to live, because we went from a rotary phone ( a party line ) to pagers in the 90’s to personal cell phones in the 2000’s. I can still remember my grandmother picking up the phone and telling the lady down the street miss margarita to let her make a call. She said that woman would stay on the line all day and talk. Lol. But just think about all the changes. Advancements like no other time in history. The Bible tells of a time when we will see major advancements in a short period of time. And we have. In some way I wish we could go back to the old ways. Pulling up at the gas station and the attendant running out to full up the tank and wash your windows- check the oil. And everything was so clean. Ladies wore nice clothes mostly dresses. You would never see a woman in line at the store with her pajama pants on, no ! Ladies had a nice blouse & skirt and would have a brooch on. When I turned 50 I started collecting brooches and I wear them. Life was different back then. Not always good. But most families stayed together with mom and dad and you set down to dinner together every night. We need more of that. Families being together. God bless everyone! Leslye

What this movie suggests is that the recently dead can physically "re-manifest" in our world, while drifting in and out of it. You notice how she is physically present and able to be seen by living people, but then in a few scenes, she "fades" out where nobody can see or hear her. Paranormal researchers have heard about this phenomenon for centuries- that the other side can at least temporarily, appear in out world as a solid being. Whoever came up with this film had a deep, profound understanding of the paranormal, at a time when most people knew nothing about the subject.
@frankbray9416
@frankbray9416 Жыл бұрын
The producers of this film conveyed this thought really well by clever use of the soundtrack, which changes subtly when she is no longer "visible" to living people but has returned to the ghost state.

That’s the difference between classic horror & the contemporary movies. Back then, the emphasis was more on suspense, plot twists, a creepy atmosphere. I never saw a decapitation or someone’s abdomen sliced open with intestines spilling out. We were better off with talented writers rather than relying on special effects, guts and such realistic violence.

I was born in 61 and grew up watching these types of horror movies. I do not know why I never saw this one, except that it was probably never aired by our local station. Back then TV conglomerates did not exist. You had local stations, and you were limited to what they chose to air. This is why I love You Tube, I get to see all the old stuff that was not played locally when I was a kid.

“Carnival of Souls” is a film that still works for me after all these years. And it remains a model for post analogue independent film-makers wishing to make a horror film on a small budget. The video posted here video displays a good deal of restoration and sharpening before digital colourising. Yet for me the colourising does little to improve what was was so atmospheric in black and white. One day colourising applications will facilitate greater accuracy of suggested colour. But the moment the lower end applications will only output uneven, unrealistic approximations of true colour.

You also have to watch the movie with the lights out to get the scary effects.

Esse software de colorização precisa aprimorar muito, as cores ficam flutuando e às vezes nem muda cor alguma, continua preto e branco. O filme é ótimo, um clássico e muito original.

I agree with you that the colorization isn't of good quality.

Candace Hilligoss was once married to Nick Coster who did a lot of TV work and had a bit part in "All the President's Men."

I wonder if this was the first film to feature the paranormal occurrence of someone who doesn't realize they are dead and go on drifting in and out of existence like what became popular after The Sixth Sense.

Sure, it's prettier in colour, but it's scarier in B/W. The actress reminded me of those EC horror Comics women.

The criticism of the colorized version would make more sense if its existence somehow caused the black & white original to vanish. But the black & white version is still around-and this colorized version is merely an option. A free one!

If you cant colorize right then don't do it, not only is it bad its not even consistent.Its changing from moment to moment.

That is probably more the fault of the old print that was used and not the talents of the person doing the colourization. Personally I found the uneven colour in this version gave it an unusual, not-quite-there quality that I found fascinating

There’s an official colourised version of the directors cut by legend films(off color films). Of course a lit can watch the B/W version as an option.

I was a horror movie fanatic as a kid growing up in the 1960’s. the title is so familiar, as is the ghoul, but, after watching a few moments, i don’t recognize it. It does remind me of Night of the Living Dead though. That movie used to scare the crap out of me. And as people from that time know, you were stuck watching whatever was listed in the tv guide. Unfortunately we couldn’t select what we wanted to watch.

So, this means that everybody who interacted with her was dead already? This can't be because the hostess at the store suddenly ignored her... hmmm

No, Mary herself is dead. The ghosts are dead too, ofc. But the cops, the priest, the doctor, the landlady, Mr. Linden etc are alive.

Très bon film, histoire remarquable. L' avoir colorisé n'est pas du meilleur effet. L'original en noir et blanc devait êtres plus impressionnant. Dommage !, nous avons perdu en intensité et en profondeur. Les acteurs sont impressionnants.
