My husband and I are probably the most boring cruise passenger ever because we don’t participate in excursions anymore. We’ve done them during our first few cruises but we just like to hang out shop and eat on port days. I love cruising but it’s about the getaway and the ability to just chill for us. Praying for this young man’s widow family and friends, such a horrible tragedy.

I have been researching cruises and I am going with my 4 year old maybe next year and I think about what I will and will not do. I think I will be by the pool side reading a book getting the sun rays with my kid wadding in the pool, eating, and just relaxing which in my perspective is a win win. No cooking cleaning food and fun.....RIP to the man who wanted to live a little and take a chance on jumping into the beautiful waters and didnt survive

2 years ago me and my family went to Puerto Rico. We went to a waterfall in Gozalandia. It was breathtaking. My brother wanted to swim out to the rocks to climb and jump off. No one was paying attention when he decided to do this and we didn’t know we should consult our guide before partaking. Next thing you know my sister is screaming “My Brother!!! He’s struggling to stay above water. He’s drowning! Thank God 2 people…the most fit couple I’ve ever seen jumped in and swam to his rescue! They saved his life. Turns out he was reaching for the rope but kept missing with nothing to hold on to, he got exhausted and started drowning. We all made sure to wear life vests after that. This was so scary because I thought we were going to lose my brother on what’s supposed to be a happy occasion. Bless this man’s family and loved ones.

I am so, so sorry to hear this! Two of my friends fell off a jet ski far off shore. The excursion wasn’t booked through the cruise line we were on. I stayed on shore because I honestly cannot swim and I didn’t feel like it was safe. They were gone for a long time and I was starting to worry a little bit. When they came back, they told me what happened. The jet ski flipped and sent them in the water. One of the jet ski workers were nearby and saved them both. If you’re not a strong swimmer, but you love the water, just use your discernment and stay on the shore of the beach and just enjoy your vacation. You don’t have to do all of the extras if you aren’t 100% sure that you can. 💛

There needs to be more warnings about jumping into water holes and waterfalls. There have been people who were good swimmers who either died or barely survived because many of these sink holes has water that is much colder and diving from a high place and going deeper into the water upon landing, the body can go into cold water shock and stop a person's heart or because of the water being so cold, you can't hold your breath as long and your body will want to involuntarily take in air causing you to drown. Also, with waterfalls, if you land in the wrong spot, you can get caught into a swirl where the water is constantly dragging you back underneath over and over until you get exhausted. It's best not to dive or jump into these things.
@GunnerHillTX
@GunnerHillTX Жыл бұрын
Chaeya - You're absolutely right about how easy it is to get into serious, even lethal trouble in oceans, pools, rivers, sink holes, waterfalls, etc. The trouble is, some people think they're special, invincible, and will even climb wall, fences, & barriers, etc, to do what they want to do. Not saying this particular tragedy was the young man's fault in any way - I don't know the circumstances - I'm just saying that even with all the warnings in the world about danger (and laws designed to reduce/prevent danger) there are always going to be some people who choose to ignore all that, and sometimes they pay the ultimate price..

But what I didn't take into consideration was this was in January which temperatures peaked in the low 70s. We just hiked up the small mountain all sweating body temp probably elevated from the exercise only to jump into freezing water. My body went into shock and when I tried to take a breath when I came up I couldn't. Thank God there was someone there to pull me up enough out of the water so I could catch my breath! My father did not zip line as he had mobility issues but cheered her on. My parents never learned to swim, but were avid boaters who didn’t always (never) wear their floatation devices. It’s all up to the individual to decide.

I just done this over Thanksgiving last year (2022). I have been wanting to forever and we finally got the chance. The Blu Hole was not as portrayed. It was raging over the falls to the point where you couldn’t jump off the falls. The only place you could jump was the platform. The jump itself is about 20 ft or so and I almost decided not to it. The only thing that saved me was a life jacket I CHOSE to wear!! The water just wants to hold you down!! I am glad I done it and possibly would do it again, but I do recommend wearing a life jacket!!

We dodge a tragedy during our 2nd cruise back in 2011. My wife and I were married for not even a year and we decided to book another one, after our honeymoon cruise. Driving to the port, she kept telling me her right arm keeps bothering her. So she took some ibuprofen. Got on the cruise, and we ported at St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, for our 1st stop. We planned on going on a beach excursion that day but I told her, we should stop by the hospital to have her arm checked. To our surprise, the test showed she had a blood clot and it was inching close to her heart! We spent literally from 10am to 1am in the ER, running tests and getting her help ASAP. I had to go back to the Carnival ship to pack everything up and had to deport out of St. Thomas. I felt helpless at one point because I even had to go around St. Thomas to pick up her meds. I commuted like the locals to save money on fare. We spent another week there at some overpriced motel because it was their peak season and we can't just go back to the U.S. since that spring, a major snowstorm hit the entire US except Miami. Couldn't call our families much since long distance calls were expensive. I remember when we finally got back in the mainland US, we were both relieved. Carnival did not refund our trip despite the fact that we were only on the ship overnight. So, definitely buy the trip insurance. We were lucky, the doctor said, if we didn't go to the ER the following day. My wife would have died during her sleep while on the ship 😮

I was on the Sunrise in December. I was walking into the room where the performers were singing modern songs in a 1920's fashion(where everyone plays bingo). As I was walking from the second floor down to the bottom floor to reserve a seat when the lights cut out and I missed the next step...and the step after that. I fell all the way down while the actors were performing in front of everyone. I heard what sounded like a car rear ending another car. That was probably the sound of my brain smashing into my skull. At the end of it, elegant night was a disaster. Two black eyes, pounding headache, bruises and sprained fingers. I realized the next day that I was so close to snapping my neck or cracking my skull on my very first cruise all because I was too confident...and I was completely sober. Be careful guys. Don't let your guard down like I did. It's almost as if vacations are filled with gremlins. I'm so sorry to have heard this story. My condolences to the wife.

For the first time is the key phrase. If you have never jumped from 20 feet before then an unsupervised waterfall is not the time to see what happens. Same for things like unsupervised open water snorkeling or scuba diving and things like that.

OMG! I love your channel and this has me doubly shook! In February, my adult daughter went on her yearly visit to the family's timeshare in Aruba. For probably the 10th time in her life, she went on an excursion that stopped at the "natural pool" that people jump into from the cliff. That day was not a lucky one for my daughter. A rogue wave and just the wind and timing sent her smashing into the coral. The fact she is alive and has recovered from her injuries is a miracle. So her and I booked a Virgin Cruise to try and make a more (happy) memorable vacation for April 2. Yes, that was the cruise where a passenger fell to her death from the 14th deck (our deck) to the 7th deck where we happen to be joining our FB group for an impromptu grog walk. Traumatized is not even how I can explain it. Some of our group left the ship back in Miami as they actually witnessed the fall and tried to help. When the ship re-routed and went to Cozumel we didn't even want to get off the ship, but one of our Rock Star friends had chartered a private catamaran and encouraged us to join them. We ended up having a beautiful day in Cozumel but to say we are overly cautious at every turn now would be best way to describe the two of us now.

You make some good points about assessing the risk of whatever you are doing, but realizing that even with proper precautions somethig can go wrong with disastrous consequences. Of course we shouldn't try to live in a bubble. I've never been to Jamaica, but I have ridden a motorcycle for a number of years, and you learn to watch out for unexpected things. I've been to the blue hole in Jamaica and it's beautiful. My family and I jumped off the cliff that had the rope tied on to a tree, but we didn't jump off the water fall area. The cliff at first is scary but you have a life jacket on so it wasn't too bad for us. However, my brother in law whos about 200lbs + had a life jacket on and when he hit the water, he said he went pretty deep to the point he almost panick cause he wasn't sure if he was going to make it back up. After that, he didn't want to jump off the rope anymore. RIP to the man that lost his life and im so sorry this happen to you.

He was a grown man that probably felt very strong to do it. I'm sure a man that was responsible to stand by his wife through her major health issues is very responsible. RIP Anything can go wrong at anytime for anyone. Look into the accidents at theme parks that kill people and those have all kinds of safety checks. Yet, water rides have been flipped and people got stuck under the ride and drowned.

We were just at blue hole last month. We did not book through carnival. We got there and paid $20 to get in and our group on 6 were given a guide that helped us navigate through. We were all given life jackets and we all jumped. Ages 52, 44, 41, 18, 14, and 11. I saw a couple of people not using life jackets but the current is too strong to not have a life jacket on no matter how strong of a swimmer you are. My hearts goes out to this family. I’m so sad to hear this man died. We are Jamaicans who live in America, on a visit back my whole family went to Blue Hole. We entered from the local side, not where the buses go. We used one of the guides who works there and as we went along- each of us decided when we had gone far enough based on our abilities, and the way ahead. Even though the guide did it, NONE of us jumped off the waterfall. We are all strong swimmers. My brother and nephew are in great shape and still felt it too dangerous. Those of us that climbed up there, enjoyed experiencing the smaller falls and coves. We only jumped off of the platform. We all had life vests provided by blue hole.

Yes we went to both sites. Both with tour guides. We did dive as well. Life vests. Yes, I concur one must know their limitations. There was 16 of us, our friends. Only one didn’t dive from the highest area. He chose a lower elevations. However, the young lady that we just taught how to swim the day before was the first to dive. She had on a life vest as well. Tour guides are very much needed. We have a blast

I've traveled the World but always take precautions. I visited the Mayan ruins and even propelled down the side of a cliff after watching everyone else do it. I took my time,listened to the guide and all was fine. I notice during my travels going on different excursions people don't listen or pay attention which is dangerous. I was in Acapulco on an excursion doing a zipline across a small body of water and the guide gave us instructions, showed an example of how to use the stick as a brake right before the end of the line etc. I went first without any issues. The next few people almost hit the man and tree at the opposite end because they didn't use the stick to brake. Smh I say all this bc yes were on vacation having fun but you want to return home in one piece. #SafetyFirst Prayers for her loss. 🙏🙏

I jumped into a water hole in Mexico, 25 feet high. Hitting the salty water felt like hitting the floor. My ass hurted so much I thought I had broken something. The discomfort lasted 3 or 5 minutes, but I felt like if I had hit the water in a slightly different way maybe that would have been much dangerous if I was alone. I was with a tour and we had a bodyguard plus the tour guide for a group of 20. Luckily it was just pain, a lot of pain, but nothing broke.

I will carefully walk out and float for awhile but I keep my swimming to the pool where the current is controlled. Like you said, know your abilities. When I learn more, I will do more, but for now, I'm not pushing limits. Congrats on your diving cert! I feel learning new things keeps our minds active and engaged. So good for you! I keep telling folks don't wait until you are my age to focus on brain health, every decade after you stop going to school you should make it a point to learn a new language or activity etc... that will help with brain health in your later years.

We did two lessons a week and the 1st lesson was just me standing in waist deep water and holding a rail while I dipped my face in. One of the things that surprised me was when I dipped my face in the water the rest of my body naturally wanted to float.. who knew! From there she just worked on building my confidence in trusting myself and my body's ability to float.

that is so sad. brought tears to my eyes. i'm 68 & just starting cruising. i went with a group a few weeks ago to the caribbean & at an island went to a beach. it was filled with pretty, but painful rocks, the water was moving, i put my snorkel gear on, only 2nd time doing it, & went in. the water was too rough for me & i had to try to reach one of our group standing there. i couldn't touch bottom. it was scary as hell. i'm going to bermuda by myself in september. i'm glad i saw this, it reminds me to get a life jacket & stay out of rough waters. my sincere condolences to his wife. he looked like he was a really decent good person. big warm hugs for her. i saw my boyfriend sustain traumatic brain injury at the hands of another, so i know her trauma seeing it happen. it affects you long afterwards. you are in a state of shock for quite some time. the tears come out of nowhere, suddenly. 11 years is a long time. take care yourself. yolissa. i'm so sorry.

WOW may he RIP. That is super sad but I do agree with you. People throw caution to the wind when vacationing and relax all of their senses and natural defenses. I remember going on a snorkeling boat once and I can swim ok but not what I would consider strong. Well we were on the beach knocking back 2 for 1 drinks and shots and then we go out in the sun on this boat...those waves hit me and I had the presence of mind to stop myself (though all suited up and ready) from getting in the water. I didn't trust myself because I knew I was more tipsy than I was comfortable with and wouldn't be able to get myself out of trouble. But that stop and think moment doesn't always present itself and in a flash something bad happens. Again my condolences to the wife and family of this young man. Definitely a cautionary tale! 😥

I never been to the blue hole but been to Amber Cove and did a natural waterfall excursion called 27 waterfalls and that was fun but I didn’t do big jumps just the smaller ones. I was a bit nervous but got used to it at the end. Stay safe everyone and feel bad for that gentleman’s family and friends.

I was there the day after this happened on another ship and it’s actually the first time I heard that this happened. Drove right past Dunns River Falls as I think it’s an overrated experience in Jamaica and opted for a different excursion, but nothing was said. So sad it happened to another cruiser.

I agree that many people do not take a good look at themselves and their abilities. Its easy to let your guard down and not do a "risk assessment" before engaging in an activity. This is the real world and stuff happens. I do want to express my condolences to this man's wife. I am sorry for your loss. 10:08

Very Sad Situation! My prayers to the family! Even when u go on any excursions with the ship or private tour company… you sign many disclaimers basically that they are Not responsible if anything happens to you. So be cautious everyone !! Happy Cruising 🏝️🌴🛳️🏖️

I know my limitations and would not attempt this. This is sad and tragic news. I feel sorry for this couple, however accidents do happen no matter where you are. Be safe Jay!!

I agree wholeheartedly! I 100% would never do anything like this. I normally stick to foodie excursions or excursions with a meal included most times. I feel terrible for his wife, family, and friends he tragically left behind. You really never know when your last day on Earth will be. So never take anything for granted for nothing is promised to remain that way 😔.

I know of two families who experienced tragic vehicle accidents during cruise excursions - one of the families had a death and the other family had severe injuries that kept them hospitalized in the foreign country for weeks. I agree with doing thorough risk assessments on the various excursion offerings - don't take anything for granted.
