The word "service" for a car used to mean a serious maintenance schedule back in the day. It meant , carburettor jet adjustment, oil change, oil and fuel filter , points, condensers, spark plugs, timing adjustments, tappet/ valve clearence adjustments and the air cleaner plus a radiator flush back when regular water was used in radiators ( which you can still use in modern cars if you need to) every 5000km. Greasing of ball joints and tie rods called chassis lubrication was also recommended. Today it sounds more serious than it is thanks to new tech in cars and engines. An oil change and air / oil filter is more than enough for a regular service( modern plugs last for a long time) as well as an overall vehicle check. Mtu asikuuzie brakes, brake fluid, unless it is low or looks dirty( silicon based fluids DOT 5 lasts upto 5yrs ), shocks na "tune Up", everytime you change oil. Modern engines are controlled by software that don't need any" tune ups" unless there is an error code that lights up the check engine light.
@shemotoionyango34122 жыл бұрын
Well summarised. The only regular "service" should be done on consumable parts in a car i.e. engine oil, AC filter, Oil filter. The transmission oil is not a regularly serviceable part as it is "locked" within transmission, that is the oil doesn't get contaminated as compared to engine parts.
@tomm4872 жыл бұрын
@@shemotoionyango3412 Thanks. Auto transmissions indeed take longer within service intervals.They will need services eventually due to the fact that they contain clutch packs with friction material that does wear off and will contaminate the fluid over time. The fact that its oil is also under constant pressure and higher heat when operating leads to a faster break down of its lubrication properties. Most manufacturers recommend an auto transmission flush interval which can be found in the vehicle manual. It is advisable to always check the levels and note the color and smell too. Dark fluid with a burnt smell is a sign of an abused transmission, an easy thing to do to an automatic via overheating or running it with a low transmission oil level for prolonged periods.

Very informative Erick and very good insight on Oils. I would like to point out that DOT 4 b/f is compatible with DOT 5.1 b/f and not DOT 5.0. DOT 5 is silicone based and DOT 5.1 is glycol based just like DOT 4. Never mix DOT 4 with DOT 5.1. Also, DOT 3 b/f is highly hygroscopic and banned in Kenya by KEBS. If in your car DOT 3 is recommended, simply use DOT 4 it is simply an upgrade

Brake fluid should NEVER have to be "topped up" as it runs on a closed system. If it runs low this is either an indication of that your brake pads are wearing out or more seriously you have a leak.

There's also API SP (ilsac gf-6a) which is the latest standard... Also backward compatible with ilsac gf-5... It should also be noted that unlike dot 4 which is backward compatible with dot 3, and dot 5.1 which is backward compatible with dot 4 and dot 3, dot 5 is silicone based, hence not compatible with any other brake fluid, so should only be used in vehicles that use only dot 5.... Keep up the education Eri with a CK... 👏🏽

most people think once they don't drive their car often so they can extend their oil service or wait on their factory oil service maintenance alert.Please oil is cheap, engine is not so change your oil every 6/7 month even if you don't drive it often.True,some engines will survive late oil change even when you don't drive the car often and some won't don't experiment with your expensive car.

Definitely your videos are informative, but boss go slow on those "WILLs" because WILL is a definate inevitable occurance, ie that if you e.g service your car, it is bound to definately die...no maker the parts or lubes used.

What's the difference between oil and fuel filter?
@tomm4872 жыл бұрын
The oil filter filters contaminants from engine oil that circulates around in your car's engine.It has to be changed everytime you change the engine oil. It is normaly located under or on the side of the engine and is cylindrical in shape, like a cup. A fuel filter filters debris from petrol in the fuel tank before it gets to the engine. In modern cars it is located under the car or near the fuel tank in the back of the car. It doesn't normaly need changing unless there is a problem with fuel delivery to the enginei.e a blockage , a bad fuel pump that need to be replaced or due to high mileage on the car.

Very informative. I have a query though. Is there any harm mixing 2L of normal engine oil with 1L of synthetic variant for my 2008 Toyota Belta?
@tomm4872 жыл бұрын
Synthetic oils are made to withstand harsher engine running conditions like high temperatures and higher revs without breaking down and losing lubricity or foaming. They use that stuff in racing cars that's why it's more expensive. It is also cleaner and lasts longer between changes as compared to regular organic motor oil. You can mix them, but the organic/normal one will reduce the benefits of the synthetic stuff over time. It's better if they both have the same weight e.g type 5w 20 or 5w 30 etc , based on the one your vehicle manufacturer recommends in the car manual. I either use one or the other by itself just for consistency and to help the wallet if need be.
