I own one in Costa Rica. I've put it to the test. I get 45 on the highway with high octane fuel on auto mode, then in sport mode its sufficiently peppy and fun to drive on these winding mountain roads. This car is super light and in lock 4x4, it's very well at climbing up slippery muddy roads. Even in inclines. It's not real torquey nor does it have the clearance for safari type mudriding but if you want a car very capable of getting you through sandy beaches, muddy roads and up slippery inclines but still handles like a top and gets you amazing gas mileage this is the all around choice. I also have an awd crv that doesn't even come close to capabilities. The honda CRV gets only 34 compared to 45 and isn't offroad capable in the least bit. The vitara is far more fun to drive but sure it has somewhat of a cheaper interior but the price makes up fo it. Plus I find it much easier to wash. I don't care so much about whether some of the plastic in the car is "Soft touch" or not. The Crv does have quite s bit of space but for my wife, my toddler and me I find the vitara just as suitable space wise. The seats go down very nicely and there's plenty of space to haul things. I would close the vitara over the Honda for functionality, drivability, gas economy and it's offroad capability anyday.

Hi, we live in New Zealand and have owned our Vitara 2015 1.6 Allgrip since new and it's now done just over 125000Km and have had no problems just one brake light got replaced last year and that's it. Due to us going a lot off rd The best thing we did with ours was to get rid of those stupid road tires and replaced them with proper AT tires - Falcon 215/60R17 - this gave the vehicle lots more grip / traction and are more suited for this type of vehicle as it is advertised as an on/off road vehicle (not 4X4). The falcons also makes the vehicle look more aggressive and by going to a larger size tire we also gained a little more ground clearance. other than that its a great vehicle made by Suzuki. Cheers Glenn v from NZ

I bought one of these new, 3 years ago and after owning a Jeep, i would say the only thing holding back this car off road, would primarily be poor ground clearance. I could add the lack of low range too, but i find this isn't used much anyway! But, its surprising the sort of very steep rutted bush tracks this car will take me.

Great review. Lovely natural explanation without sales hype. Your'e saying most people probably won't take it off road. This is the very reason I'm watching your video. There are so many videos showing 4 wheel drive vehicles, but not showing the off road capability. The only thing I'm not sure about is it's ability to climb a steep hill with wet grass. I currently have a 4.4 litre Range Rover (I use all the buttons on it). Having said that, I'm pretty sure the Suzuki would take me to where I want to go. Thanks

I'm no expert, but I don't think you'll find the 4WD Lock has anything to do with the ESP mode, let alone putting it 'up to its maximum setting'. In fact, if it's anything like the older Grand Vitara (which it may well not be, as the Grand Vitara has a far more serious 4WD system), putting on the lock mode actually switches off the ESP.

TBH id rather take A Subaru XV up there. You wouldnt get stuck in one of those. Saying that, these are road tyres and im sure with better rubber it would cope perfectly well. My Panda 4x4 that I had a few years ago had mud and snow tyres on it as standard, and it never got stuck in anything, even deep muddy ruts on steep slopes. It was lighter which would have helped, but my point is, this Suzuki is excellent, and this video is a great advert for it. Just get some Cross Climates on it at the very least.
