Yes, exactly. She doesn't get enough credit for being a fine raconteur. The punchline is classic "That's what they always say when you're on your way to Istanbul!" yet almost incidental because the way she told the story was so entertaining.

Is it just me or does her makeup look like it’s that aesthetic teen look, right out of 2018-20??? That pink blush right across her nose and cheeks. The cartoonish eye makeup with winged eyeliner and false lashes. And that beautifully pointed nose seems to go perfectly with it.

Cheer up, Gene. Actually, Carol Channing had that gift of appearing so zany and having no idea what the audience was laughing at, but she was on top of it the whole time. Another brilliant, unique American talent gone forever.

Carol Channing was born in 1921, and when she died a few years ago, she was 89. No surprise that you have a different set of references, a different cultural experience, and different sense of humor. I would guess that older people, people who'd lived a good part of life before the advent of the internet, and had read more books, would be more likely to get it. What I do admire is that you took the time to watch it at all. Shows you're open to things that are new to you. That's a great trait!
