Bass guitar player, tutor and former studio musician Carol Kaye in an interview for US KGTE 17 network reveals how in many cases, most of the music on great legends records wasn't played by them, and it was created by not renown studio musicians.

@@joesmith34 Joe English, Abe Jr. , and maca himself on 1st solo album and a few others. Awesome players. But the 1st rhythm and lead guitarist, jimmy and Denny (new John and George) were unbelievable. Add maca, and you had a helluva band. Maca the genius was even able to integrate Linda's vocals and synth into the sound without damaging the magic. Famous quote, not substantiated. Us, us, us!! Any musician, especially if you play bass, has to love this woman. I am, and I do!! I made a living in my earlier years from my studio by making tracks for people since I play many instruments. One of the first things you learn is to play for the track, not the individual instrument. NEVER step on the vocal. That's the art of it. Always put the puzzle together around the vocal where the story is. They got that, and that's why the wrecking crew, and the swampers in particular, were great studio bands. But this woman is a monster musician folks. I love to hear her reminisce!

No one plays their instrument with their genitals. Have you ever noticed that every woman in music is "the first" and "broke the stereotype". Mother Maybelle Carter is probably the first notable guitarist to make records. Every country ,folk and rock guitarist follows in her footsteps. Ella Fitzgerald is remembered for her amazing singing but forgotten as a band leader. Melba Liston was a successful arranger. I could do this all day. Boys vs. Girls is bad enough on the playground. Of course any kind of divisiveness benefits the psychopaths who try to control society. Let's stop fighting each other and start resisting the think tank psychos.

My Sister dated Jim Haas, frontman singer of the Frantics in the 70s just out here , L.A. , in an old car from Montana. The band recorded an album that's on KZbin today. Dennis Devlin, singing lead on "Morning Dew," said he dedicated that song to me. Jim went on to have a career as a studio musician singing backup for bands we all know, doing road tours and lead vocals on a theme song for a tv series. My Dad, who passed recently at 96, was on the road playing trumpet when I was due in 1948. Mom was late. Grannie told him ,"If you dont come home, this baby is never going to be born." He turned to working in films in studios, his dad being a career cameraman playing in "The Eddie Duchin Story" and the original "Titanic." He said every day on set the floor was tilted a bit more to portray the ship sinking.

@CrasherXtreme Nobody but you seems to think in necessary to interject race into the conversation. Look back over the few comments that responded to my original post 2 freakin' years ago, not a one except yours mentions a thing about race, only examples of various musicians who just happen to be black or white. If you happened to watch the movie you would know that the musicians that made the Motown sound didn't see each other by race and when the outside world forced them to they protected each other because of what connected them, made them brothers. Their connection ran deeper and stronger than the outside tint of the individual meat sacks these very fine souls experienced this reality in. I recently saw an ignorant post by some brainwashed social justice warrior or equally brainwashed blm bigot stating that we wouldn't have music if it wasn't for the black race. What a load of horse shit! Every culture has contributed to the language of music in their own way. What of Mozart to Beethoven, the Scottish and Irish who's music came w/ them when they immigrated to the U.S. which evolved into the music of Woody Guthrie and then Bob Dylan, how about Bill Monroe and Bluegrass? 'Well the blacks brought rhythm w/ drumming' you might say, sure, of course they made a contribution but so did the drums of the Native Americans or how about Tanggu from China or Taiko from Japan. On and on it goes, a list as long as the amount of cultures that have existed on this planet. So quit trying to interject the current fad of ignorance into something that is obviously beyond your understanding - Art. Oh yeah, one more thing - Grow Up!

@CrasherXtreme My reply is based in your comment "Black folks shaped our culture" which unfortunately has morphed into a CULTure. Sure black influenced our culture but it was not only their hands, hearts and souls that did it. American Art, all forms, reflects the multi cultural reality that is the so called 'Melting Pot' of America. Instead of an absolute statement like "Black folks shaped our culture" it would be more accurately stated - Black Folks have made a significant contribution to the evolution of many facets of our culture. Also to say they were the first in American music doesn't fly either, they get credit for laying down the rhythm in what became 'rock and roll' (and yes, because of the culture of the time they were royal ripped off) but once again to make a definitive statement like "they were the first in American music" is to over look all of the other cultures that were here and engaging in and contributing to the evolution of the Art form. I am also a conservative but I also studied Art through 1/2 of the 80's in Detroit before going on to the Art Institute of Chicago. Have shown internationally, collected by a Detroit biker to a bishop in Venezuela and have not had to take job outside of my studio since '98. I'll add in I have got to travel to 48 states and 7 countries because of a love of seeing live music, my 300th concert (I quit counting after that) was in Vail, Co. in '01 seeing Warren Haynes on his 40th b-day. So I guess I could say I know a little something about Art and it's evolution. That being said modern 'music', particularly rap, is corporate social engineering bent on division and violence starting pretty much w/ N.W.A. The 1st rap music I was exposed to was during the mid to late '80's on the streets of Detroit and what was being 'rapped' about was lyrically more in the line of Bob Dylan w/ the positive vibes produced by Bob Marley not the dark and sadistic 'lifestyle' that has been promoted over the past 30 years. No one race can claim an Art form as theirs in this country let alone claim they are the first. That ended back when humanity started boarding ships for points unknown and returning home w/ what they found and learned.

Carol Kaye is part of a small group of bass players who changed the entire music industry. Being a woman made it even more difficult for her. She is correct that if you can think of of others, rather than just yourself, you are already ahead of many musicians. The greatest music on earth, whatever the style, is often TEAMWORK.

There is a Netflix movie called "The Wrecking Crew" (2008), which is absolutely fascinating... it is all about 1960's-era top flight studio musicians like Carol Kaye, Hal Blaine, Glenn Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, and others, who provided the rock solid instrumental backing for the Monkees, The Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, and so many other pop-rock music artists of the 1960's era. Carol was phenomenally creative and talented as a bassist... essentially the Chris Squire of her era; she made the bass have a voice of its own, i.e., where it became much more than just a backing instrument.

Love it, I have worked with some very accomplished musicians and they tend to complicate things. I remember telling my late friend and fellow musician,songwriter... The ear doesn't care how simple the music is, the only thing that matters is if it sounds good and feels good. Many great songs have been written with two chords. I hope Carol Kaye gets the credit she deserves because it's the little things that make an ordinary song a hit. Thank you for your unforgettable riffs, Carol.

This is how the music industry used to work. 1. Demo. 2 Get approved. 3 Get the producer. 4 Finish the song. 5 Record the parts. 6 Learn the song that you no longer know. 7 Go on tour to support the record you just learned. I don't know about now. I'm dumbfounded how ALL music is drum tracks and computer.

She did not play on all the songs used for this video. She was one of the numerous "first call" musicians, that included additional bassists, who played on many recorded hits. For just one example... She did play for some of "The Beach Boys" recordings, including "Wouldn't It Be Nice", but the Bass Player on "Good Vibrations" was Joe Osborne, one of her associates & one of the best!
