The instrumentation was mixed to sound cinematic, instead of accompaniment. But the result is epic. I love this style and sound.

It’s a distorted bass or brass on top of the subharmonics. You can clearly hear it’s an instrument in the karaoke version. I love how epic that distortion makes it sound!

I LOVE this one! It is ominously delicious in sound and feel, the arrangement is spectacular, the performance is unearthly!!! It is a Ukrainian carol, and this seems particularly poignant to me bearing in mind the suffering of the Ukrainian people in their war-ravaged country. He sings it like an incredibly powerful WAR anthem to encourage them. I have no idea if that's what he was thinking in his arrangement and production of this, but it's a perspective that strikes me as especially relevant. It is so interesting to me the contrast it strikes between "normal" sweet carols and this radically powerful war anthem of a Christmas song that correlates with the radical Jesus who shook up the religious and political structures of his day. His message? LOVE ALL. Love and peace to us ALL this Christmas.
@Jamie_T.Ай бұрын
I so agree with you regarding the Ukraine. I have to believe Geoff was thinking of the horrors the Ukrainian people have been going through. His blue & yellow clothing and the subtle blue & yellow colors in the background and even the album art which to me looks like the bells are in a war zone. I absolutely love this cover. My favorite Christmas cover of his now, taking over from God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

Love your reaction. I thought the augmented bass that you were talking about wasn’t an instrument but him singing the same note on several tracks. Since each would be slightly different it would come out “like an instrument”-it’s a guess of course but the sound doesn’t have an artificial sound that usually comes with instruments.

Definitely two different things going on. He hits those three sub notes well below that powerful low one, but then there is a low instrument that makes an upwards transition into the next set of vocals. If it didn't sound so damned good I'd almost be mad that he used it!!!

I understand what you mean about the instruments being too loud. But I think they aren't too loud, it's just Geoff's voice blends with the low organ voices, especially. I, too, love this song, and with five Geoffs I was expecting that rich low bass! But I've listened more times now, and I see how the low organs and strings are making his natural growly bass more smooth and rich and intense. It's a pretty cool arranging choice.

I suggest giving it another few listens, it's not terribly cloudy to me, but I do get what you're saying...it helps to turn the volume down a bit, because it does muddy up when it's really loud. I agree the mix could have pulled Geoff's vocals a little more and decreased the distorted instrumentation.

I checked and my upper range matches his. On the low end, I can also get down there by using a throat singing technique used in the areas in and near Mongolia. It's hard to describe but you use vocal fry with added singing voice. I have heard women get lower tones. Don't believe me, just do a quick KZbin search: woman throat singing
