Carol Of The Bells: Played on MIDI Christmas Lights

I will be releasing a full tutorial on this shortly. I only put up 12 strands of Christmas lights this year, which matched perfectly with the 12 notes that make up an octave. I matched each light to a different midi note: for instance all 'F' notes control the lights on the top of the right tree. I imported the midi file from here:

@@TannerTech it depends on what sort of effect you wanted, now you could use the audio signal onto the signal pin of a timer to switch the lights pretty randomly, the timer could be used to make a sequence, but that wouldn't ever change, or you could have used filters, so that only certain frequencies change a light to on or off, you could then have several of those to have multiple lights on or off depending how much you split up the audio signal filtering, but are you asking me as a challenge, or actual interest 🤫

You could also use a standard electret microphone as the switch, a resistor or capacitor on the end to help tune it to ignore frequencies above or below a certain range and have the lights shange to the beat

I am asking out of actual interest. That would be a good idea and fun to do as opposed to the arduino way. I may do that someday, but the real reason why I needed to use arduino for this project was because MIDI isn't an audio signal. It is a digital signal that cannot be interpreted by passive components, a microcontroller is needed to decode it and turn on the relays. I just published another video explaining it more.
