"Carol of the Bells" was composed in 1914 by the Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leontovych. In 1921, he and his wife and children were visiting his parents for the Feast of the Epiphany when two strangers knocked on the door, asking for overnight shelter from the bad weather. Mykola's father welcomed them. A conversation later that evening turned contentious. The two strangers were pro-soviet, Mykola Leontovych favored independence for Ukraine, and blamed the Soviet regime for suffering that Ukrainians were experiencing. After everyone went to bed, one of the strangers - who was in fact a Soviet agent who was looking for "dissidents", shot Mykola, robbed the family, and fled with his accomplice. Mykola Leontovych, composer of "Carol of the Bells", died in his father's arms as his little daughter looked on. I add this information, not to detract from this video performance, but to show that the song has much deeper roots than it would suggest.

It is. That's why people do it. It takes on its own reality. It's its own escape, you shift quickly and apparently easily from real life role into that of a fantasy character. In the process of which it may become more and more difficult for " to differentiate between what is real and what is not." Such is theater. GREAT theater opens up the magic proscenium and when the actor becomes the character onstage an exchange of energy takes place that draws the audience inexorably in. The successful theater performance is magnified to the extent that all persons involved understand their roles, take them seriously and sheer energy and dynamism from this very process comes through to everyone involved in the production both on and off stage.......definitely could be community building

@@BWPorter I was born and raised in the church, a devout believer up to and into my early 20s... until I wasn't. I could be more specific and detailed if you request, but since I'm not sure that's really what you were asking about, for now, I'll spare you the boring bits. 😁👍
@BWPorter2 жыл бұрын
@@AGDinCA - caring about people and their God relationship is the most important thing I do! 🙂 Let's dive into details! Why so devout, and then not?
@AGDinCA2 жыл бұрын
@@BWPorter Hmm... OK, since you seem to be genuinely interested (and not someone looking to fight), I'll share. You asked two questions, which I will answer separately. *"Why so devout?"* Well, I was born and raised in a Christian family, with all members of both sides belonging to the same denomination. My grandpa was a deacon and my grandmother was a deaconess. It was joked about within my family that I would marry the music pastor's son who was the same age as me. I'm sure you get the picture here. Everyone in my life was Christian - my family, my friends, my classmates, my teachers, etc. My life was my religion. I believed everything I read in my Bible and everything I was told by my pastors, without question. I studied my faith, prayed fervently, proselytized when possible and, in general, tried to be everything the Christian God would want me to be. I was proud of my unwavering beliefs and of my relationship with God - a relationship that shaped and dominated my life for the first 20 years. *"And then not?"* Quite simply, I went to college and made a new friend. She was a Hindu, which my sheltered mind found fascinating. She was genuinely one of the kindest people I had ever met and we instantly clicked. We were very good friends for about a year and then she moved back to India with her family. Long story short - the first cracks in my faith came from my internal struggle realizing this wonderful person was destined for Hell. She was a better human than many Christians I knew, so how could a loving God allow her to go to Hell? After all, she was only Hindu because she was born in India, to a Hindu family. So, surely God would say it's not her fault and let her into Heaven anyway, right? Wrong. But wait... if she was Hindu due to the circumstances of her birth, couldn't I just as easily say the same about myself? Anyway, this was the beginning of the end of my religious beliefs. It took about a decade of soul-crushing self-examination, but the journey has been worth it.
@BWPorter2 жыл бұрын
@@AGDinCA - I can certainly see how that would test your faith! That's a difficult scenario for sure. However, one of my good friends lives in Nagpur, India... and loves and follows Jesus. Likewise, I have friends here in the USA that are muslim. Is the location of one's birth truly the determination of faith? Your friends sounds awesome and a beautiful gift in your life... but the Bible is clear "all have sinned" and it's only through Jesus, and His holy sacrifice, that we are saved. Our efforts cannot earn this salvation. So, I'm curious - and if it's too personal of a question, please don't feel obligated to answer - but genuinely, do you have a faith now? Some say that given the miraculous evident all around us, it requires MORE faith to NOT believe in God, than it does to believe in God.

Yes adding more rubber bands to different places to the plastic tubes gives it different sounds on a 36 inches long tube even how thick the plastic tubes are , as a kid growing up in grade schools we had Christmas wrapping paper tubes made of cardboard tube 36 inches long and made a lot of music 🎵 in music class wrapping rubber bands around the tubes at different lengths to made sounds . And didn't have any plastic tubes in the 1970s we also have Quaker oatmeal cereal boxes as drums the tube shaped not the box type . I even made a guitar with 2 deep dish Paper throw away dishes and added a paper tubes to the dishes bowls as the neck part and added rubber bands on the end of the small stiff string to attach to the tube end and stretch it to the paper bowls to make different types of sounds of 6 tightness string then added a drinking straws on both ends to raised the strings up off the tube and bowl ends . Oh I forgot I added a hole first in the top part of the paper bowl to added deep sounds then staple gun around the bowl and adding strings .

😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The guy on the end, stage right, cracked me up! We need more Christmas stuff like this at church, and less of the big productions that is repeated at all churches at multiple churches, like Little Drummer Boy. Don't get me wrong, it was cool when my church did it, but then I visited my sister's church that same year and heard their performance of it. And then I saw other churches doing the exact same thing. It no longer feels original when that happens.

Not gonna lie... we did little drummer boy too. 🤣
