I believe this scene reveals how desperate Carol was. How much she loves Therese and how much she wanted to spend the rest of her life with this woman. Firstly, she made the offer with a living. After being refused she invited her to the dinner and finally she revealed her real self, her emotions and love towards T. This scene is a pure perfection.

So true. And we can't forget Mara's performance here too -- Therese's former self said in the car that she was tired of always saying 'Yes' to everything, and we see that come back in this scene... almost like she is willing herself to say 'No' this time. But her pauses and her short answers seem like such a tenuous self-preservation, because deep down she wants to be persuaded so badly. In a way, that was their dynamic form the start -- Therese was curious and wanted to be persuaded.
@laminage
@laminage 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it certainly was. What's so poignant is that Therese says "I Miss You" but she can't say "I Love You" over the phone because it's too risky. Carol says "I Love You" and it touches Therese in a way she couldn't imagine. Did any of you ever see Brief Encounter and there's a similar Scene where a Woman is having a Tea with a Man she's having an affair with, and they both get rudely interrupted by her Chatterbox of A Friend.
@catshaveteats
@catshaveteats 4 жыл бұрын
@@laminage yes I noticed how it borrowed from A Brief Encounter. She even squeezes Therese's shoulder in the same way Alec does when he says goodbye. I like the parallel, as Carol and Therese aren't cheating, but their relationship was just as illicit in those days. It gives a glimpse of the sense of wrongdoing.

@@laminage yep, such a classic, love that film and the difficult choice made. Dedication/loyalty Vs passion. Age old question. How much most of us long for both... Another parallel to this film is that the two leads are shown as normal people. I love that about A Brief Encounter as it shows all of us can be caught up in the whirlwind of limerance, however square we are!

I said this on another Channel but in their own way Therese Belivet and Tom Ripley are alot alike. They come from Humble Beginnings, Dead Parents, A Distant Mother, can't go to College Full Time. Tom moves from place to place and in the Movie he lives in The Basement where Therese lives in the equivalent of a Studio Apartment. Yet they both come into their own. However while Therese goes from Frumpy to Fabulous Tom gets everything by being devious.

Hello, Tayina P! HOW ARE YOU? I AGREE WITH YOU 100%... I THINK THAT, IN THE MOVIE, WHEN THERESE REFUSE TO GO LIVING WITH CAROL, THE CAMERA MUST SHOW THE TWO WOMEN AT THE SAME TIME...TO SHOW,IN THAT MOMENT,THE EXPRESSION OF "CAROL" ( THE EXQUISITE MISS BLANCHETT) AND NOT ONLY THE EXPRESSION OF THERESE... AS I HAD WRITE BEFORE, I HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS THAT MISS BLANCHETT COULD DO ANY OTHER ROLE BETTER THAN THIS ONE...BUT...SHE IS A GREAT ACTRESS WITH LOTS OF TALENT...WHO KNOWS?!... BUONA FORTUNA! On the UK Soap Opera Emmerdale there are two characters named Charity & Vanessa and although they say "I Like You", they can't say "I Love You", it's still very hard for both of them especially Charity since she's been through so much. Then on another UK Soap Opera a Lady named Mel Owen may get involved with a Lady named Sharon Mitchell who wants her to manage her Club.

People weren't ready to acknowledge that Same Sex Love between Two Women could be so beautiful. Here's another fun fact. Patricia Highsmith's Ex Girlfriend Marijane Meaker was also a successful Novelist who wrote Spring Fire under the name Vin Packer about Two Sorority Girls who fall in love in the 1950's as well as Ann Aldrich, who co-incidentally wrote a Book called Carol in A Thousand Cities.

Almost every time I watch this scene and the moment happens when Carol says "I love you", my heart skips a beat and then I start getting misty eyed. Something I love about the film is it aches in this human, sometimes painful, and beautiful way. Like the restaurant scene, it's so beautiful and loving that it aches. And the film contains such emotion and feeling without sentimentality. You get your happy ending and your joy but by God the characters and the audience earn it. Now I'm a straight guy who read the book. But I can't claim to be an expert on this story or the characters in it. But I love film, I love great film making, I love well done storytelling, I love great acting, I love music, I love romance, and I love something that makes me feel something. I think Carol excels in all of these fields and more. I believe it's one of the best romance films in the last 2 decades. It works as a great film and I feel they nailed it with the romance and pretty much everything else. And in modern movies they usually don't get the romance right and stumble in getting other things right as well. But Carol got it very right. I wish there were more films like it.

"is that what comes of getting away from me" "No." Therese said that reply so quick and carol's quick movement that was barley visible was like, "hmm, I see" and then her eyes dilate and the pause just felt like a longing and just agony of waiting for one of them to spill The way Terese breathes at every word and jester Carol makes you can tell that she was happy and wanted to hide it to play as if she didn't want it, knowing that's what she always did. The more questions Carol ask the more nervous and unaware she gets like Carol noticed it every time and still pushed forward, trying to confess what they both were hiding

Did anyone notice the difference when carol says "I love you" compared to when Richard (Therese ex boyfriend) says "I love you" earlier in the film to Therese. Richards delivery of the line lacked any emotional weight as he was only looking to convince Therese of his love so she would go along with his plans of what he wanted whist Carol says it with genuine emotions.

I READ THE BOOK( IS PATRICIA HIGHSMITH ,DIFFERENT, BUT IN HER BEST. I THINK, GENERALLY BOOKS ARE BEST THAN THE ADAPTATIONS FOR MOVIES AND IN THIS CASE , FOR ME, THIS IS TRUE! I KNOW THE "LANGUAGE" IS DIFFERENT BUT IN THE BOOK THERE ARE LOTS OF TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO WOMEN THAT IN THE MOVIE IS NOT PRESENT...) AND I SAW THE MOVIE...EXQUISITE! I AGREE WITH MISS SARAH PAULSON WHEN SHE SAID THAT " CAROL AIRD" COULD ONLY BE " MISS BLANCHETT"...THIS SCENE IS " FANTASTIC"...SO MUCH SORROW, PAIN AND LOVE....AND THE EXPRESSIONS OF THE EYES, FACE AND HANDS OF MISS BLANCHETT ARE ASTONISHING... SHE IS MY FAVORITE ACTRESS BUT, I AM SORRY TO SAY THAT, I THINK SHE CAN NOT OVERCOME, IN FUTURE MOVIES, HER ROLE IS THIS MOVIE... FOR ME, IS 99,999999% PERFECT.

Who would have thought that waiting on a Customer in real life (That's What Happened To Patricia Highsmith in the 1950's) could have inspired this Literary Classic.

Little different in the book - they were not interrupted. Therese walked to the party but she could not leave the devastated Carol sitting alone in the restaurant , so had to coax her out to her car before departing.

Unfortunately nobody thought that a Movie about Same Sex Love in terms of a Timepiece would be successful at The Box Office. This Movie was just as popular in Europe, a lot of Women especially in China & Japan were in the Same Boat as Carol was who had their own "Therese". Isn't the Music in The Background so beautiful. I remember being so angry at Jack for disturbing them.

@@platinumknight woah. A reply in a year. Lol. Well, I read the book. There was still an interruption 😅 And maybe you are right, but at this point I think Therese was kind of prideful and hurt. She would probably not give Carol the satisfaction of hearing her say ILY.. ofc she changed her mind later on 👌
