This is the original demo of the song from "Head", recorded sometime in either 1967 or early 1968. The recording is from a far better source than the commonly circulated bootleg version.
The source for this is very close to the original tape - though I've never been able to find out who actually has the original. It came with two other demos of the era (both posted on my channel) and presumably those other demos were also offered to the Monkees.
My copy of these demos was on cassette for many years before I transferred them to digital. This is a particularly stunning demo, crunch and raw as it should be - but sadly it is also still unreleased.

Not to sell Carole King short. She was an all-time great and a gifted songwriter. But the contributions of her writing partner Gerry Goffin, who was the main lyricist in their partnership, should not be overlooked. Goffin cowrote this song.

+Shaine MacDonald It's unclear how many she and Goffin actually wrote specifically for the Monkees. Porpoise song was definitely one of them. The Monkees covered 13 of her songs and only 10 were released back in the day. There are at least a few songs that seem to have been available to any artist who thought they could get a hit with a particular song (like So Goes Love which was covered by a few bands but never a hit).

Beatles did a few king/goffin tunes on live at bbc, take your hands off my baby and don't you ever change, and Decca audition, take good care of my baby. Along with Chains most of these were sung by Harrison, and are excellent examples of his early vocal style, which I'm a big fan of. He must have particularly been a fan. Goffin/King were among those cited as influences when they first came to america

This song still elicits chills--in the same manner that "Strawberry Fields Forever" did. I was delivering newspapers as a 16-year-old when I first heard "Porpoise," and I couldn't make out the lyrics, of course. The psychedelic vibe was enough, however! Those of us who experienced the 60's first-hand realize that we were part of a sonic rennaisance. Better evolution than devolution. In addition to "Head," the movie "Model Shop" (with music by Spirit, including a teen Randy California) does an amazing job of documenting a hazy, trippy Los Angeles during the psychedelic era.

Hi, Rip! I love this song, too. Also, to go off on a tangent about your KZbin name, I'm about 95% sure you already know this, but in case you don't: My understanding, given to me back in the 1960s by a friend who worked in radio, is that "Rip Reed" was a name used in radio circles back in the day for an on-air news reporter who would simply rip the printed wire service news reports (like from UPI) off the machine as they came in and read them, unchanged. Again, ignore this if you already knew it, unless you know more about it than I do and can correct or add to my understanding of it! Thanks.

This is just a totally badass song I recently discovered after watching 'Head' here on KZbin for the first time. I like this demo almost as much as the Monkees version... She actually sounds like she trying to sound like a Porpoise. It's got that 'I am the Walrus/Strawberry Fields' vibe that I really loved about the later Beatles. Damn that was haunting. Even more than the final polished version. They were planning on having that latin prayer for the dead played over Mickey's jumping off the bridge; but I think that would have made the scene just too grim, and convince the audience that Mickey's character really was about to die.

These artists are the last of well, a certain caliber I don't think we will ever see again. We're lucky to be here, now to be on this planet with a lot of them still with us...❤ I can hear the psychedelic overtones she added to the piano and obviously some on her vocals during the chorus which shows me she was open to incorporating different things into the music 🎶 . I wonder who's production this was, Gerry's maybe? ❤

@@PlumbPitiful Absolutely. You can hear it's a filter being switched to various settings to get the squealing effect. I think what she did there was incredibly clever and I imagine she made the demo be a multitrack by using two recorders and overdubbing so it was more than just singing one vocal while playing the piano. She mentions overdubbing in the lyrics so I feel fairly sure. In the 80s I was so short of cash and equipment I did all my early demos that way. Also the discordant hamonies on "Goodbye goodbye goodbye" is chilling and not something you'd normally hear in a pop song. Pretty amazing really.

Though I doubt this to be the case, the ending of the regular vocals, where it seems to be a gargled mess I tend to think that was intentional. As if fading away, going down the drain, if you will. Either way, it's a largely unrecognized masterpiece.

Casey Henry It is intentional, it's mimicking the sound Porpoises make. This is a demo..you know;- try an idea out imperfectly. listen, see if it's worth working into a later takes..etc, etc. If nothing else it is a 'Porpoise Effect' so to speak, on her vocal track. I say vocal track; I would guess ALL of this is one track..If 2 then still definitely in mono. Tape Cassette recorders were available in the US by this time. Sounds VERY MUCH like a cassette recorder to me. I'd guess it was sat on the top of the piano in my opinion Fwiw.

A friend got it in a trade back in the 80s. He would never tell me who he got it from - I suspect it's someone with a name in the business at the time, perhaps a musician. No better sounding source for this anywhere.

There's this electronic jew's harp effect that I also heard in ELO's Strange Magic and One Summer Dream later - is it a clavinet?

So, Carole King wrote this in 1967 or early 1968? Did she out-Sgt. Pepper the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" with this song? Not bad for a girl from Forest Hills, Queens. And, funny thing, but the Latin sung at the beginning and end of the song sounds like the music of 14th Century German nun Hildegard von Bingen. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maXbZpmlYp13iqs end
